A Medical Student's Reflection on Ethics and Advocacy while Rotating Through an Urban Jail.

This narrative reflection explores the intersection of clinical medicine and carceral constraints through the experience of a fourth-year medical student completing a clinical rotation at the Philadelphia Department of Prisons. By documenting the challenges of managing chronic disease, acute trauma, and substance use disorders within a high-security environment, the author illustrates how incarceration functions as a primary determinant of health. Key themes include the role of physician advocacy in navigating institutional barriers, the ethical complexities of treating patients with criminal

Mechanisms of Change in the Prevention of Depression: An Indicated School-Based Prevention Trial at the Transition to High School.

OBJECTIVE: Depression represents a major public health concern, and prevalence increases significantly during adolescence. The high school transition may exacerbate the risk of depression for youth with pre-existing vulnerability. The High School Transition Program (HSTP) is a brief, skills-based intervention that has demonstrated efficacy in preventing depression in adolescents. The current study aimed to evaluate the theorized mechanisms of change of the HSTP intervention by testing a multiple mediation model including school attachment (SA) and self-esteem (SE) as two mediators of treatment

Multicultural issues in school settings.

As the caseload of ethnically and culturally diverse students who stutter increases, speech-language pathologists will need to become more culturally sensitive. Many speech-language pathologists, however, indicate that they are not comfortable treating clients from diverse backgrounds who stutter. Busy school schedules may prevent speech-language pathologists from obtaining information about multicultural aspects of stuttering. The purpose of this article, therefore, is to provide speech-language pathologists with information that addresses multicultural perceptions about stuttering and sugges

Deaf and hard of hearing awareness training: A mentor-led workshop.

BACKGROUND: People who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) comprise a significant and increasing proportion of the population. They face many barriers to accessing good health care and major communication challenges with health professionals. There is evidence that DHH awareness training for health professionals needs improvement but little information about how such training is incorporated into curricula. The research question we address is how to develop and deliver an effective workshop for students led by people who, by definition, have barriers to communication due to hearing loss and dea

Academic-community partnerships as a strategy for positive change in the sexual behavior of rural college-aged students.

Students who completed the preintervention survey were asked to complete the 74-item questionnaire again to determine if risky behavior had changed over time. Substantial reductions in risky behaviors were reported. Students reporting five or more sex partners in the previous year decreased from 13% to 4%. Students reporting "always" or "mostly" using a condom increased from 51% to 61%. Other positive findings indicated that students who had contracted a STD decreased from 8% to 2%, and students who experienced an unwanted pregnancy decreased from 12% to 4% [21]. However, despite the positive

Mental health of young adults pursuing higher education in Tier-1 cities of India: A cross-sectional study.

India, with its vast youth population, grapples with significant mental health issues among young adults in higher education, due to factors such as academic pressure, social isolation, stigma, economic uncertainty, screen time, sedentary lifestyles, and pandemic-related stresses. Though the issue has garnered attention, there's a gap in post-pandemic mental health research for Indian students. This study aims to address this by investigating anxiety, depression, and overall mental well-being among students aged 18-29 in higher educational institutions across eight major Indian cities, categor

Characteristics associated with contraceptive use among adolescent females in school-based family planning programs.

Among 162 young female family planning clients at four school-based health centers, a step-wise regression analysis shows that students' consistency of contraceptive use is associated with only a few specific service and provider characteristics. For example, clients who have more contacts with the family planning program use contraceptives more consistently than those with fewer contacts. On the other hand, young women whose follow-up visits are scheduled to occur within one month of their previous visit are less consistent contraceptive users than other clients. Contraceptive use is not rela

Protocol for acute and chronic sinusitis.

Formal protocols for nurse practitioners are mandated by many states. Protocols are of two types--process-oriented, which describe the steps used in treating patients, and disease-oriented, which define disease, explain etiology, and describe the plan of care, among other things. The sinus protocol outlined in this article is used in the UCLA student health service. It is disease oriented and focuses on college students, but it can also be adapted to use in a different setting.

Student vaccination requirements of U.S. health professional schools: a national survey.

UNLABELLED: To help protect healthcare personnel (HCP) from infection and to prevent possible disease transmission to their patients, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends vaccination of all HCP, including students. We sought to gather information on the vaccination policies of U.S. health professional (i.e., non-physician HCP) programs and to compare those requirements to current ACIP recommendations. METHODS: A self-administered, internet-based survey sent to 2,779 U.S. health professional programs was used to collect data on program demographics; student vaccin
