Lumen formation during development of the rat submandibular gland.

This study utilized electron microscopy and enzyme histochemistry to examine the morphological steps associated with the formation of a lumen in the end-buds of the embryonic rat submandibular gland. Lumen formation involved the development of junctional complexes by the central cells of the end-buds late on the 16th day of gestation. These junctional complexes established the apical domains of the presecretory cells, and cytofilament aggregates were observed beneath the presumptive luminal plasma membranes. This central area of the end-buds showed strong myosin ATPase activity, presumably ass…

Submandibular gland invasion and feasibility of gland-sparing neck dissection in oral cavity carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the incidence and routes of submandibular gland involvement in oral cavity carcinoma to determine the feasibility of submandibular gland sparing neck dissection. METHODS: The records of 155 patients diagnosed with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma, with a total of 183 neck specimens, including those involving level I, were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: Submandibular gland involvement, via direct invasion from the anatomical proximity of T4a tumours, was evident in two patients. The floor of mouth location, either primarily or as an extension of the p…

Radiation induced cell loss in rat submandibular gland and its relation to gland function.

PURPOSE: To understand early and late radiation-induced loss of function of the submandibular gland, changes in cell number were documented and correlated with data on gland function. Modulation of the radiation effect by sialogogues was used to investigate possible mechanisms of action. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Rats were irradiated with a single dose of 15 Gy of X-rays after pre-treatment with either saline, the muscarinic receptor agonists methacholine or pilocarpine, the adrenergic receptor agonist phenylephrine or methacholine plus phenylephrine. Before and 1-240 days after irradiation, sub…

Malignant salivary gland tumors: squamous cell carcinoma of the submandibular gland in a child.

PURPOSE: Malignant neoplasms of the salivary glands are extremely unusual in the pediatric age group. METHODS: We report an 11-year-old boy who presented with a mass in the left submandibular region and a second mass in the jugularfacial venous angle. RESULTS: Histologic evaluation determined that this was a squamous cell carcinoma of the submandibular gland with metastasis to a cervical node. Review of the literature was undertaken to identify the rate of malignant salivary gland tumors in children. Malignant salivary gland tumors are extremely rare in children. When malignancy does occur, …

Benign submandibular gland tumours: outcomes of gland-preserving excision by endoscopic or conventional approach.

Endoscope-assisted surgery is becoming a preferred technique in salivary gland surgery. However, this technique has not yet been applied in submandibular gland (SMG) preservation surgery. This retrospective study was performed to evaluate the outcomes of endoscope-assisted gland-preserving surgery through a hairline incision in patients with benign SMG tumours. The study included 38 patients with benign SMG tumours who underwent tumour excision with gland preservation: 19 who underwent local excision of the tumour through an endoscope-assisted hairline approach and 19 who received the conventi…

[Rare case of supernumerary submandibular gland lobes forming a complex with the sublingual gland].

In the sublingual/submandibular gland complex (L/M complex hereafter), the submandibular gland process adjoins the sublingual gland. Therefore, it is speculated that the L/M complex in the fused state is due to excessive development of the submandibular gland process. However, we encountered a case of the L/M complex formed due to supernumerary glandular lobes (lobes A, B, and C) developing in the posterior 1/3 portion of the submandibular duct. Lobes A, B, and C showed the following macroscopic morphologies, constitutions, ducts, and histological morphologies. Lobe A was disc-shaped, and this…

Agenesis of a submandibular gland with compensatory pseudotumoral hypertrophy of the contralateral gland: sonographic findings.

Agenesis of a submandibular gland with compensatory hypertrophy of the contralateral gland is an extremely rare disorder. Most reported cases of unilateral submandibular agenesis have been asymptomatic without any associated facial anomalies. We report a case of submandibular gland hypertrophy mimicking a mass that was detected incidentally. The absence of the contralateral submandibular gland and associated contralateral sublingual gland hypertrophy was confirmed by typical imaging findings.

Ultrasonographic echogenicity of normal salivary glands in adults: comparison of submandibular and parotid glands.

PURPOSE: The normal submandibular gland (SMG) and parotid gland (PG) are thought to have similar homogeneous ultrasound (US) hyperechogenicity; however, this has not been extensively investigated. The aim of this study was to determine whether the normal SMG and PG have similar US echogenicity. METHODS: We included 969 consecutive adult patients with normal salivary glands. The patients were categorized into three age groups: group 1 (19 to 29 years, n=27), group 2 (30 to 49 years, n=273), and group 3 (≥50 years, n=669). The echogenicities of the SMG and PG were prospectively evaluated by an …

Progesterone metabolism by major salivary glands of rat--I. Submandibular and sublingual glands.

The metabolism of progesterone by the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands of female (nonpregnant and pregnant) and male rats was studied. The metabolism was in both sexes significantly greater in submandibular than in sublingual glands. Sex differences were not seen in sublingual glands but less metabolism was found in homogenates and microsomal fractions of female (nonpregnant and pregnant) submandibular glands compared to that of males. The metabolism did not differ between pregnant and nonpregnant female rats. The metabolites were mainly 5 alpha-pregnane-compounds. On the basis of …

Schwannoma assumedly originating from the submandibular ganglion or glandular branches radiologically mimicking a submandibular gland tumor.

Schwannoma is a benign nerve sheath tumor composed of Schwann cells. Schwannomas originating from ganglia are rare, and schwannomas of the submandibular ganglion or glandular branches have not been reported to date. We present a case of a Japanese woman in her sixties with a submandibular schwannoma originating from the submandibular ganglion, mimicking a submandibular gland tumor on radiological findings. As the radiological findings were nonspecific, the key finding in the present case may be the characteristic location of the tumor suspended from the undersurface of the lingual nerve and si…

Gland-preserving surgery can effectively preserve gland function without increased recurrence in treatment of benign submandibular gland tumour.

The most widely accepted treatment for neoplasms of the submandibular gland usually involves excision of the entire gland. Our aim was to establish a gland-preserving operation for benign tumours of the submandibular gland and evaluate its efficacy. We treated 40 patients from January 2007 to December 2008 with benign submandibular gland tumours who were listed to have an operation that either preserved the gland or sacrificed it. Duration of operation, extent of injury to the nerve, postoperative function of the gland, aesthetic appearance, and recurrence were assessed. We found no significan…
