Methadone maintenance for opiate dependence.

The use of the synthetic opiate methadone on a continuing maintenance scheduled is unquestionably the most successful and most widely applicable treatment for the control of opiate dependence. Though the medical aspects of the treatment are simple, the nature of the medication and the nature of the problems of opiate dependence are such that administration of a program requires careful attention. Because the problem is so serious both to society and the addict, it is urgent that we develop and adequate number of well run methadone programs throughout the state and the nation.

Tobacco Cessation Interventions and Smoke-Free Policies in Mental Health and Substance Abuse Treatment Facilities - United States, 2016.

Persons with mental or substance use disorders or both are more than twice as likely to smoke cigarettes as persons without such disorders and are more likely to die from smoking-related illness than from their behavioral health conditions (1,2). However, many persons with behavioral health conditions want to and are able to quit smoking, although they might require more intensive treatment (2,3). Smoking cessation reduces smoking-related disease risk and could improve mental health and drug and alcohol recovery outcomes (1,3,4). To assess tobacco-related policies and practices in mental healt

Substance use and mental health outcomes during emerging adulthood among individuals with different patterns of child maltreatment.

The aim of the current study was to identify patterns of child maltreatment experienced prior to age 18 and examine the relationship between those patterns and substance use and mental health disorders among emerging adults. Data were from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III. The analytic sample consisted of 5,194 adults between 18 to 25 years old. Latent class analysis revealed a 3-class model: Rare Maltreatment (59%); Occasional Maltreatment, Rare Sexual Abuse (37%); and Frequent Maltreatment, Some Sexual Abuse (4%). Risk for substance use disorders and po

Nicotine dependence and incident psychiatric disorders: prospective evidence from US national study.

We examined the prospective associations between nicotine dependence and the likelihood of psychiatric and substance use disorders in the general adult population. Participants came from a nationally representative sample of US adults aged 18 years or older, who were interviewed 3 years apart in the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (Wave 1, 2001-2002; Wave 2, 2004-2005). The primary analyses were limited to 32,671 respondents (13,751 male (47.9% weighted); mean age of 45 years (SD = 0.18)) who were interviewed in both waves. We used multiple regression and propen

The "urge to classify" the narcotic addict: a review of psychiatric classification. I.

Attempts to classify drug addicts are divided into three main groups: (1) psychiatric classifications, (2) psychological classifications, and (3) classifications by pattern of abuse. An extensive literature review of the psychiatric classifications of narcotic addicts suggests that there is no one diagnosis that fits all narcotic addicts and that the importance of psychopathology in drug addiction has been exaggerated. It is concluded that theoretical psychiatric classifications of narcotic addicts have failed to stimulate empirical research and that empirical classifications have not demonstr

Co-occurring psychiatric disorders in women with addictions.

There is clinically important comorbidity between psychiatric and substance use disorders, particularly in women. Women with affective and anxiety disorders are more likely to present with alcohol or drug abuse/dependence. In turn, substance-abusing women are more likely to experience clinically significant depression and anxiety. Emerging evidence is pointing to an etiological role for anxiety disorders in the development of substance abuse/dependence; however, etiologic evidence is not as clear-cut for major depressive disorder. PTSD appears to be a particularly important factor for alcohol

Stimulant Use Disorder.

Primary care providers (PCPs) are often tasked to care for those with stimulant use, both prescribed and illicit. The increasing use of stimulants across all age graphics has become more prevalent over the last several decades. The challenges of managing use and misuse are becoming more common for those in an office-based setting. With a wide range of uses including behavioral modification, narcolepsy and weight management, it is without doubt that a PCP may encounter stimulant use on a regular basis.

Role of ketamine in the treatment of substance use disorders: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) involve diminished control, risky use, impaired social interactions, and physical dependence. Despite their global prevalence and burden, treatment options remain limited. Ketamine (KET), an NMDA receptor antagonist, may aid SUD treatment by modulating glutamatergic neurotransmission. This systematic review evaluates KET's role in SUD treatment. METHODS: This review surveyed three databases until June 2024, including 14 studies with 551 participants. RESULTS: Among the 14 studies, 6 focused on alcohol, 3 on cocaine, 4 on opioids, and 1 on c

Women veterans and risk of illicit substance use and use disorders, 2015-2019 and 2021: A secondary analysis of the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

BACKGROUND: Women veterans are at risk for substance use and substance use disorders, although there remains limited data on substance use in women veterans. METHODS: A secondary analysis of data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health from 2015 to 2019 and 2021 was conducted to compare women veterans with women non-veterans and men veterans on substance-related outcomes, including lifetime substance use, frequency of past 30-day substance use, and past-year substance use disorders for cannabis, opioids, and stimulants. RESULTS: From 2015 to 2019, women veterans were about 53 % and 2

Anxiety and substance use during adolescence.

BACKGROUND: The primary goal of this study was to examine the relationship between anxiety symptomatology and substance use (alcohol use and drug use) during adolescence, systematically by gender and race/ethnicity. METHODS: Self-report surveys were administered to 905 15-17-year-old adolescents (54% girls) in the spring of 2007. RESULTS: RESULTS from multiple group analyses indicated that the relationship between anxiety and substance use differs by gender and race/ethnicity. For Caucasian and African American boys, higher levels of social anxiety and separation anxiety were related to less

The wake of addiction: Pharmacological strategies for sleep disturbances in stimulant use disorders, a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines to identify human studies investigating pharmacological interventions and reported sleep outcomes among individuals with CUD or MUD. METHODS: PubMed and APA PsycInfo were searched from inception to January 2025 and risk of bias was assessed. Articles were included if they included human participants with either cocaine or methamphetamine dependence, administered a pharmacological treatment, and reported night-time sleep as an outcome using at least one rigorous measurement tool. Articles were excluded if they included a

Trends in Psychiatric Hospitalizations of Patients With Dual Diagnosis in Spain.

OBJECTIVE: Substance use disorders are highly prevalent in people living with a mental health disorder. METHODS: This is a retrospective study based on the registry of 18,367 hospitalizations and 7,124 patients with a mental health disorder admitted during the period 1998 to 2020 in Malaga, Spain.
