Blood sugar changes in neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia and phenobarbitone therapy.

A controlled study was carried out to show the effect of bilirubinaemia and phenobarbitone therapy on the blood sugar metabolism in newborn infants. In the control infants, a significant inverse correlation existed between the serum bilirubin and the blood sugar levels in the first 4 days. The liver seemed to be a factor in producing such a relation. Glucose may be a useful adjunct to the treatment of neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia. Phenobarbitone therapy had significantly raised the blood sugar levels and lowered the serum bilirubin levels in these infants. It is suggested that enhancement of l

Unprotected C-Aryl Glycosides From Native Sugars via Glycosyl Sulfonyl Hydrazides: A Thermal Cap-and-Glycosylate Strategy.

We report a thermal cap-and-glycosylate strategy for the direct, protecting-group-free synthesis of unprotected aryl C-glycosides from native sugars, employing glycosyl sulfonyl hydrazides as glycosyl radical precursors under redox-neutral nickel catalysis. This two-step process avoids photoirradiation, chromatography, and external redox agents. 11 Unprotected monosaccharides react with high 1,2-trans selectivity, tolerating diverse functional groups and heteroarenes. The utility is showcased by two-step assembly of gliflozin drugs, their analogues and Neopetrosin C. This platform positions gl…

Stable isotope labeling reveals that sugars are direct precursors to several toxicants and flavorings in cigarette smoke.

INTRODUCTION: sugars, added or naturally present in cigarette tobacco, have been reported to contribute to the harmful properties of cigarettes by enhancing smoke palatability, appeal, and potentially toxicity and addictiveness. In this study, 13C sugars were used to better understand the specific impact of added sugars on smoke composition. METHODS: [13C]-isotope-labeled sugars were added to cigarettes. Different concentrations, sugars (fructose, glucose, sucrose, and a mixture) were tested with 8 cigarette brands, with different design characteristics such as length, filter ventilation, and…

Not all sugars are equal: galactose interference leading to false hyperglycaemia in a case of classical galactosaemia.

OBJECTIVES: Classical galactosaemia (OMIM #230400) is an inborn error of carbohydrate metabolism caused by deficiency of the enzyme galactos … blood galactose, due to a known limitation of the POC glucometer specificity for the monosaccharide sugars glucose and galactose. This led to falsely elevated glucose readings on POC glucometer testing in the presence of a high galactose concentration. Reduced GALT enzyme activity and genetic testing subsequently confirmed a diagnosis of classical galact …
