Sulfonated covalent organic frameworks (COF)/polyethersulfone (PES) membrane with enhanced hemocompatibility for blood oxygenation.

In extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) treatment, designing membrane with self-anticoagulant properties can solve problems resulting from the adverse effect of anticoagulants. In this study, 2,4,6-Triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and 2,5-Diaminobenzenesulfonic acid (Pa-SO3H) were applied to grow a sulfonated COF film in situ on the polyethersulfone (PES) membrane. The introduction of sulfonic groups increased the hydrophilicity and electronegativity of the TpPa COF film, improved its anti-protein adhesion properties, maintained the normal morphology of blood cells, and endowed the COF film

Bioaccumulation and toxicity of perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) and perfluorobutane sulfonamide (FBSA) in Eisenia fetida and Eisenia andrei.

The widespread use and persistence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have raised concerns about their ecological impacts. The relative lack of toxicological data for most current-use PFAS, including short-chain compounds such as perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) and precursors such as perfluorobutane sulfonamide (FBSA), is an uncertainty factor in ecological risk assessment. This study investigated the bioaccumulation and chronic toxicity (mortality, light avoidance, and change in soil granulometry as proxy of burrowing behaviour) of PFBS and FBSA in the earthworm species Eisenia fe

Synthesis, antioxidant activity of novel sulfonamide and sulfonate organic salts bearing various heterocyclic moieties.

AIM: The reactions of various heterocyclic primary amines with sulfonyl chloride derivatives or with sulfosalicylic acid results in the first case to the formation of sulfonamide derivatives and in the second case to the formation of sulfonate organic salts which are both hybrid molecule that integrate multiple pharmacophores into a single scaffold. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The novel sulfonamide derivatives 3 were obtained through mono-nucleophilic addition reactions of the corresponding primary amines to the appropriate sulfonyl derivative. In contrast, the sulfonate organic salts 5, 7 and 8 w

Mitochondrial and inflammatory dysfunctions underlie perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS)-induced neurotoxicity in adult zebrafish.

Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) is a persistent environmental contaminant widely detected in aquatic ecosystems and associated with neurotoxicity. However, the mechanisms underlying its neurological effects remain unclear. This study investigated acute and chronic neurotoxic effects of PFOS in adult zebrafish (Danio rerio), focusing on behavioral alterations, mitochondrial dysfunction, neuroinflammation, and histological abnormalities in different brain regions. Adult zebrafish were exposed to PFOS at 0.1, 1, and 10 μM for 30 min (acute) and 14 days (chronic). Behavioral assays evaluated

Comparative effectiveness of sodium zirconium cyclosilicate versus calcium polystyrene sulfonate for patients with heart failure.

Patients with heart failure (HF) are at increased risk of hyperkalemia, and implementing appropriate potassium-lowering therapy is essential for optimizing outcomes. Sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (SZC) is a selective potassium binder that effectively reduces serum potassium levels; however, its impact on mortality and cardiovascular outcomes in HF remains unclear. This study compared the effects of SZC and calcium polystyrene sulfonate (CPS) on a composite of all-cause death and major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE)-related hospitalization, along with individual MACE components and contin

Differential hepatic activation of mouse and human peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α by perfluorohexane sulfonate.

Exposure of perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) is associated with hepatomegaly and accumulation of lipids that may be mediated by nuclear receptors like peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α (PPARα), constitutive androstane receptor (CAR), or pregnane X receptor (PXR). This study tested the hypotheses that: (i) PFHxS causes changes in liver by activating PPARα, CAR, or PXR, and (ii) there is a species difference in PPARα activity by PFHxS. Wild-type, Ppara-null, and PPARA-humanized mice were fed either a control diet, or one containing 2.2 mg PFHxS/kg diet or 25.8 mg PFHxS/kg diet for ei

Polystyrene Sulfonate Resin as an Ophthalmic Carrier for Enhanced Bioavailability of Ligustrazine Phosphate Controlled Release System.

Topical ocular sustained-release drug delivery systems represent an effective strategy for the treatment of ocular diseases, for which a suitable carrier has yet to be sufficiently developed. Herein, an eye-compatible sodium polystyrene sulfonate resin (SPSR) was synthesized with a uniform particle size of about 3 μm. Ligustrazine phosphate (LP) was adsorbed to SPSR by cation exchange to form LP@SPSR. LP@SPSR suspension eye drops were further developed using the combination of Carbopol 934P and xanthan gum as suspending agents. The LP@SPSR suspension showed a sustained release in vitro, which

Effects of perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids on developmental, physiological, and immunological measures in northern leopard frog tadpoles.

The chronic toxicity of short chain perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (PFSAs), such as perfluorobutanesulfonic acid (PFBS) and perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS), are relatively understudied despite the increasing detection of these compounds in the environment. We investigated the chronic toxicity and bioconcentration of PFBS and PFHxS using northern leopard frog (Rana [Lithobates] pipiens) tadpoles. We exposed Gosner stage (GS) 25 tadpoles to either PFBS or PFHxS at nominal concentrations of 0.1, 1, 10, 100, and 1000 μg/L until metamorphosis (GS42). We then assessed tadpole growth, development

Maternal concentrations of perfluoroalkyl sulfonates and alterations in white matter microstructure in the developing brains of young children.

BACKGROUND: Maternal exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has been linked to child neurodevelopmental difficulties. Neuroimaging research has linked these neurodevelopmental difficulties to white matter microstructure alterations, but the effects of PFAS on children's white matter microstructure remains unclear. We investigated associations between maternal blood concentrations of six common perfluoroalkyl sulfonates and white matter alterations in young children using longitudinal neuroimaging data. METHODS: This study included 84 maternal-child pairs from a Canadian pregna

De(sulfon)amidative Cyclization: The Synthesis of Dibenzolactams and Dibenzosultams for Organic Light Emitting Diode Materials.

This study addresses a challenge in organic synthetic chemistry: the direct cleavage of amide bonds, which is typically hampered by the thermodynamic stability of the C(Ar)-C(acyl) bond. Previous methods often rely on "CO" extrusion-jointing transition metal-catalyzed process and require activated tertiary amides, limiting their applicability due to incompatibility with reactive functional groups such as halogens. Herein, we report a transition metal-free approach for the deamidative cyclization of biaryl diamides via a radical process, yielding dibenzolactam derivatives. Along this line, we h

1H NMR based sulfonation reaction kinetics of wine relevant thiols in comparison with known carbonyls.

Sulfite addition is a common tool for ensuring wines' oxidative stability via the activity of its free and weakly bound molecular fraction. As a nucleophile, bisulfite forms covalent adducts with wine's most relevant electrophiles, such as carbonyls, polyphenols, and thiols. The equilibrium in these reactions is often represented as dissociation rather than formation. Recent studies from our laboratory demonstrate, first, the acetaldehyde sulfonate dissociation, and second, the chemical stability of cysteine and epicatechin sulfonates under wine aging conditions. Thus, the objective of this st

Hepatotoxicity induced in rats by chronic exposure to F-53B, an emerging replacement of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS).

A plethora of studies have shown the prominent hepatotoxicity caused by perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), yet the research on the causality of F-53 B (an alternative for PFOS) exposure and liver toxicity, especially in mammals, is largely limited. To investigate the effects that chronic exposure to F-53 B exert on livers, in the present study, male SD rats were administrated with F-53 B in a certain dose range (0, 1, 10, 100, 1000 μg/L, eight rats per group) for 6 months via drinking water and the hepatotoxicity resulted in was explored. We reported that chronic exposure to 100 and 1000 μg/L F

Gut microbiota-mediated C-sulfonate metabolism impairs the bioavailability and anti-cholestatic efficacy of andrographolide.

Cholestatic liver injury results from the accumulation of toxic bile acids in the liver, presenting a therapeutic challenge with no effective treatment available to date. Andrographolide (AP) has exhibited potential as a treatment for cholestatic liver disease. However, its limited oral bioavailability poses a significant obstacle to harnessing its potent therapeutic properties and restricts its clinical utility. This limitation is potentially attributed to the involvement of gut microbiota in AP metabolism. In our study, employing pseudo-germ-free, germ-free and strain colonization animal mod

Effects of Perfluorooctane Sulfonate on Cerebellar Cells via Inhibition of Type 2 Iodothyronine Deiodinase Activity.

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) has been used in a wide variety of industrial and commercial products. The adverse effects of PFOS on the developing brain are becoming of a great concern. However, the molecular mechanisms of PFOS on brain development have not yet been clarified. We investigated the effect of early-life exposure to PFOS on brain development and the mechanism involved. We investigated the change in thyroid hormone (TH)-induced dendrite arborization of Purkinje cells in the primary culture of newborn rat cerebellum. We further examined the mechanism of PFOS on TH signaling by re

Pharmacokinetics of toltrazuril and its metabolite, toltrazuril sulfone, in suckling piglets following oral and intramuscular administrations.

Toltrazuril (TZR) is currently the only registered chemotherapeutic drug in the European Union for the treatment of Cystoisospora suis. This study investigated the comparative pharmacokinetics and tissue concentration-time profiles of TZR and its active metabolite, toltrazuril sulfone (TZR-SO2 ), after oral (per os, p.o.) and intramuscular (i.m.) administration to suckling piglets. Following a single administration of TZR orally at 50 mg/piglet or intramuscularly at 45 mg/piglet, higher concentrations of TZR and TZR-SO2 were observed in all three investigated tissues after p.o. administration.

A post-sulfonated one-pot synthesized magnetic cellulose nanocomposite for Knoevenagel and Thorpe-Ziegler reactions.

The development of biodegradable and active cellulosic-based heterogeneous catalysts for the synthesis of different organic compounds would be attractive in pharmaceutical and petrochemical-related industries. Herein, a post-sulfonated composite of one-pot synthesized magnetite (Fe3O4) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) was used as an effective and easily separable heterogeneous catalyst for activating the Knoevenagel and Thorpe-Ziegler reactions. The composite was developed hydrothermally from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), iron chlorides, urea, and hydrochloric acid at 180 °C for 20 h in a

Hydrodeoxygenation of Lignin-Based Compounds over Ruthenium Catalysts Based on Sulfonated Porous Aromatic Frameworks.

Bifunctional catalysts are a major type of heterogeneous catalytic systems that have been widely investigated for biomass upgrading. In this work, Ru-catalysts based on sulfonated porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) were used in the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived compounds: guaiacol, veratrole, and catechol. The relationship between the activity of metal nanoparticles and the content of acid sites in synthesized catalysts was studied. Herein, their synergy was demonstrated in the Ru-PAF-30-SO3H/5-COD catalyst. The results revealed that this catalytic system promoted partial hydrogena

Preparation of Multifunctional Surfactants Derived from Sodium Dodecylbenzene Sulfonate and Their Use in Oil-Field Chemistry.

Four products were obtained from sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) and formaldehyde (40% solution) using a simple reaction. The products were characterized by TGA, IR, UV and MS to confirm the major chemicals in each sample. The new products could reduce the interfacial tension between oil and water in the experimental temperature range further compared to SDBS. The emulsion ability was also enhanced by SDBS-1 to SDBS-4. The oil-displacement efficiencies of SDBS-1 to SDBS-4 were obviously higher than that of SDBS, and the oil-displacement efficiency of SDBS-2 was the best, with an efficie

Sulfonated PAM/PPy Cryogels with Lowered Evaporation Enthalpy for Highly Efficient Photothermal Water Evaporation.

Because of the increasing scarcity of water resources, the desalination of seawater by photothermal evaporation with harvested solar energy has gradually become a popular research topic. The interconnected macroporous cryogel prepared from polymerization and crosslinking below the freezing temperature of the reactant solution has an excellent performance in photothermal water evaporation after loading photothermal materials. In this study, polyacrylamide (PAM) cryogels were prepared by cryo-polymerization and sulfonated in an alkaline solution containing formaldehyde and Na2SO3. Importantly, t
