After unilateral removal of the optic tectum in frogs, the cut optic tract regenerates to the remaining ipsilateral tectum. Although the orienting movementselicited by moving objects (food or threats) are now directed mirror-symmetrically to normal responses, these frogs correctly localize stationary objects as barriers. Apparently, thalamic and tectal visual mechanisms can operate independently.

Moving backgrounds profoundly impact object perception, a crucial process for parsing complex visual scenes. This motion-induced modulation has traditionally been attributed to visual cortical circuits. However, recent evidence that brainstem activity is also influenced by background motion raises the intriguing question of whether subcortical circuits play a role in this perceptual phenomenon. Here, we demonstrate that inhibitory projections from mouse nucleus of the optic tract (NOT)-a brainstem structure mediating reflexive behaviors-impair superior colliculus (SC)-dependent visual detectio

Retrograde labelling of retinal ganglion cells with optic nerve transection often leads to degeneration of ganglion cells in prolonged experiments. Here we report that an intact optic nerve could uptake retrograde tracers applied onto the surface of the nerve, leading to high efficiency labelling of ganglion cells in the retina with long-term survival of cells. This method labelled a similar number of ganglion cells (2289±174 at 2 days) as the retrograde labeling technique from the superior colliculus (2250±94) or optic nerve stump (2279±114) after transection. This finding provides an alterna

Here we examine the patterns of connections between the zona incerta (ZI) of the thalamus and the major visual centers of the rat brain, namely the retina, dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (LGd), superficial layers of the superior colliculus (SCs), and occipital cortex (Ocl). Injections of the tracers biotinylated dextran or cholera toxin subunit b were made into each of these centers, as well as ZI itself, by using stereotaxic coordinates. Rat brains were then aldehyde-fixed and processed using standard methods. We show that the retina, LGd, SCs, and Ocl all have connections with ZI; moreove

Retinal fibers approach close to the tectal midline but do not encroach on the other side. Just before the entry of retinal axons into the superior colliculus (SC), a group of radial glia differentiates at the tectal midline; the spatiotemporal deployment of these cells points to their involvement in the unilateral containment of retinotectal axons. To test for such a barrier function of the tectal midline cells, we used two lesion paradigms for disrupting their radial processes in the neonatal hamster: (1) a heat lesion was used to destroy the superficial layers of the right SC, including the

Unprecedented mortality occurred in bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) at DeGray Lake, Arkansas, during the winters of 1994-1995 and 1996-1997. The first eagles were found dead during November, soon after arrival from fall migration, and deaths continued into January during both episodes. In total, 29 eagles died at or near DeGray Lake in the winter of 1994-1995 and 26 died in the winter of 1996-1997; no eagle mortality was noted during the same months of the intervening winter or in the earlier history of the lake. During the mortality events, sick eagles were observed overflying perches

Morphology of single axons of tectospinal (TS) neurons was investigated by intraaxonal injection of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) at the upper cervical spinal cord of the cat. TS axons were electrophysiologically identified by their direct responses to stimulation of the contralateral superior colliculus (SC). None of these axons responded to thoracic stimulation at Th2. Three-dimensional reconstructions of the axonal trajectories were made from 20 well-stained TS axons at C1-C3. Cell bodies of these axons were located in the intermediate or deep layers of the caudal two-thirds of the SC. Usual

To clarify the mechanisms involved in the ventilatory response to the inhalation of low concentrations of CO (0.18-0.22% in air), the roles of the arterial chemoreceptors and the forebrain structures have been investigated in unanesthetized adult cats. The ventilatory response was observed in conscious animals intact, after carotid denervation (CD), and after midcollicular decerebration. The results show that the initial small ventilatory depression was unaffected by CD but that the subsequent characteristic tachypnea was blunted after CD even after more prolonged exposure to CO. The CO tachyp

In comparison with the geniculostriate pathway, the retinotectal projection in rat and hamsters appears to emphasize information concerning localized transient stimuli, particularly in the periphery of the visual field. An important question is whether the superior colliculus merely relays this information elsewhere, or instead takes part in its analysis. This question is broken down into two parts. First, what decisions do rats and hamsters have to take concerning localized transient visual stimuli in the periphery? It is suggested that the following decisions are taken: (a) does the stimulus

We have studied the visual prey acquisition behavior of frogs with unilateral optic nerve section, unilateral tectal lobe ablation, and unilateral transverse hemisection at a level between the tectum and the cerebellum. The first two groups of animals oriented normally to stimuli throughout the region of visual field overlap and failed to respond to more peripheral stimuli on one side. Hemisected animals responded to stimuli at all positions in the visual field. For stimuli located contralateral to the lesion, the frogs oriented normally. For ipsilateral stimuli, the frogs oriented forward.

Mice of the mutant strain pearl (pe/pe) differ from the wild strain by a single gene mutation, which leads to a lightening of the coat color. We tested this strain to see if this mutant gene also expressed itself in one or more visual abnormalities. Pearl mice were found to lack totally the optokinetic nystagmus reflex that was present in every normal mouse that we examined. This lack of optokinetic nystagmus was not due to oculomotor defects, since postrotatory nystagmus was normal. As described for other pigmentation mutants, we found that pearl mutants had a reduced ipsilateral projection t

Frogs with bilateral aspiration lesions of the caudal thalamus were unable to avoid collision with a vertically striped barrier that partly surrounded the animal. This striking deficit co-existed with normal visual guidance of feeding and avoidance of threat. In addition, all lesioned animals were unable to turn towards an aperture within black or white enclosures in order to escape noxious stimulation. Some residual detection of stationary edges remains, however, since most lesioned animals were able to avoid a small barrier placed before them. It is concluded that pretectal visual neurons pl

The visual fields of seven cats raised with binocular lid suture were measured before and after various neural lesions. Each of the cats preoperatively responded with each eye to stimuli from 90 degrees ipsilateral through to the midline. A transection of the optic chiasm rendered one cat blind on the visual field tests. Large bilateral occipito-temporal cortical ablations (4 cats) did not measurably affect orienting responses or the extent of visual field. Unilateral occipito-temporal cortical ablations (2 cats) also had no affect on the visual fields, but subsequent ablations of the contrala

Some properties of the axonal transport of proteins and glycoproteins along the optic pathway of chick embryos and newly hatched chicks were studied by labelling retinal ganglion cells with 3H-proline or 3H-fucose. A study of the effects of colchicine (COL) and vinblastine (VLB) on embryonic axonal transport was also carried out. Marked changes in the efficiency of axonal transport were found throughout development. In particular, the fraction of retinal ganglion cell proteins which is rapidly exported toward tectal terminals increases during embryonic life but steadily decreases after hatchin

BACKGROUND: The length of the tectal plate, which sits above the midbrain, is reduced in both the Richardson's syndrome (RS) and parkinsonism (P) variants of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). However, it is unclear whether tectal measurements could be useful biomarkers in other PSP variants or predict PSP pathology.
METHODS: The Neurodegenerative Research Group, Mayo Clinic, enrolled 115 PSP (including seven variants), 19 corticobasal syndrome (CBS), 21 Parkinson's disease (PD), and 50 controls. Forty-seven PSP patients had PSP at autopsy, and 15 had a non-PSP pathology. Tectal plate leng

PURPOSE: To examine the involvement of c-Jun and c-Jun N-terminal phosphorylation (JNP) in apoptosis of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) after the optic nerve (ON) transection.
METHODS: The expression and phosphorylation of c-Jun protein and apoptosis in RGCs were examined after ON transection in wild-type mice and mice in which both phosphoacceptor serines of Jun have mutated to alanines (c-Jun[AA] mice). The fluorescent tracer 1,1'-dioctadecyl-3,3,3',3'-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate (DiI) was applied to the superior colliculi (SC), and the right ON was severed after 7 days. After two…

Despite remarkable advances in mapping the functional connectivity of the cortex, the functional connectivity of subcortical regions is understudied in living humans. This is the case for brainstem nuclei that control vital processes, such as autonomic, limbic, nociceptive and sensory functions. This is because of the lack of precise brainstem nuclei localization, of adequate sensitivity and resolution in the deepest brain regions, as well as of optimized processing for the brainstem. To close the gap between the cortex and the brainstem, on 20 healthy subjects, we computed a correlation-based

The superior colliculus (SC) integrates multimodal spatial information to guide orientation behaviors. Visual inputs to superficial layers drive these behaviors through circuits in deeper layers, which also receive input from other sensory modalities. The inferior colliculus (IC), a central midbrain hub of auditory system, provides both VGluT2-expressing excitatory and VGAT/GAD67-expressing inhibitory projections to the SC, but the organization of these projections remains incompletely understood. In this study, we systematically mapped excitatory and inhibitory IC projections to the SC. Cre-d
