Bilious abdomen is an uncommon but life-threatening condition that has not previously been associated with prophylactic gastropexy. In animals, bilious abdomen is associated with a high mortality rate, due in large part to resulting bile peritonitis. Most bilious abdomen cases in veterinary medicine occur secondary to underlying gallbladder disease or blunt abdominal trauma. BACKGROUND: Fibrocartilaginous embolism (FCE) is a rare cause of spinal cord infarction. Most spinal cord infarctions are due to aortic pathologies and aortic surgeries. One theory is that material from the intervertebral discs follows a retrograde route to the anterior spinal artery. Records of horses admitted to a veterinary surgery in the UK for lameness investigation during 2000 to 2008 were reviewed.
