A female wild boar, aged approximately two years, was found dead by local veterinary services in Pianola di Roio in L'Aquila Province situated in the Abruzzo Region of central Italy. The carcass was submitted to the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell'Abruzzo e del Molise 'G. Caporale' in Teramo for necropsy. Cystic echinococcosis (CE; Echinococcus spp.) is widespread in many domestic animal species in Italy, with the G1-G3 genotype predominating. The G7 genotype ("pig strain"), which is much less common, has only been reported in pigs and wild boar from the island of Sardinia and in wild boars from southern mainland Italy. Female pigs are commonly utilized as an animal model for biomedical research and require urethral catheterization. Sixteen pigs were anaesthetized for research purposes and required the placement of a urethral catheter. BACKGROUND: Brucella microti was first isolated from common vole (Microtus arvalis) in the Czech Republic in Central Europe in 2007. As B. microti is the only Brucella species known to live in soil, its distribution, ecology, zoonotic potential, and genomic organization is of particular interest. Several animal species, including horses and pigs, can be infected with Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). Feral pigs (Sus scrofa) are considered an effective amplifying host for JEV in natural habitats.
