Reconsidering the Diagnosis: Abnormal Sweat Chloride Tests in Non-CF Bronchiectasis.

INTRODUCTION: While the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis (CF) is often straightforward and reliant on correlation between genetic testing and cl … hort (n = 23) that presented to pulmonology clinic at a single center with intermediate or positive sweat chloride tests but non-diagnostic full CFTR gene analysis. RESULTS: Median sweat chloride result was 48 mmol/L, and a majority of the cohort had chronic lung disease with atypical pathogens on sputum culture, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, non-t …

Numbers (but not words) make math anxious individuals sweat: Physiological evidence.

The study aimed to determine the specificity of math anxiety by measuring physiological arousal to the presentation of numerical and non-numerical stimuli. It also investigated whether math and trait anxieties share similar behavioral and physiological manifestations. Fifty-two female university students performed an experimental task including simple or complex arithmetical equations and math-related or neutral words. Participants' electrodermal activity (skin conductance response) was monitored during the task. Math and trait anxieties were measured using common explicit questionnaires. Resu

Eccrine Sweat Gland and Its Regeneration: Current Status and Future Directions.

Eccrine sweat glands (ESGs) play an important role in temperature regulation by secreting sweat. Insufficiency or dysfunction of ESGs in a hot environment or during exercise can lead to hyperthermia, heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and even death, but the ability of ESGs to repair and regenerate themselves is very weak and limited. Repairing the damaged ESGs and regenerating the lost or dysfunctional ESGs poses a challenge for dermatologists and bum surgeons. To promote and accelerate research on the repair and regeneration of ESGs, we summarized the development, structure and function of ESGs, a…

Blood, Sweat, and/or Tears: Comparing Nervios Symptom Descriptions in Honduras.

With the aim of advancing the cross-cultural investigation of the folk illness nervios, I conducted a dual-sited comparative study of symptom descriptions among two diverse research settings in Honduras. Baer et al. (Cult Med Psychiatry 27(3):315-337, 2003) used cultural consensus modeling (CCM) to confirm a core description of nervios among four Latino groups in the US, Mexico, and Guatemala, but observed that overall agreement and average competence in a shared illness model decreased along a gradient from presumably more-to-less economically developed sites. This has left unresolved whether

[A 67-year-old man with fever, night sweat and ascites].

A 67-year-old man presented with fever, night sweat and abdominal complaints for about 4 weeks. Ultrasound and a computed tomography scan showed distinct ascites as the main finding, presenting as exsudate with predominating lymphoid cells. Because of long-term immunosuppressive therapy with the tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α inhibitor golimumab for psoriasis, the suspicion for a possible tuberculous peritonitis arose. This was confirmed with an enzyme-linked immunospot assay, a high level of adenosine deaminase in the ascites and a peritoneum which was studded with multiple whitish nodules, co…

Syringocystadenoma Papilliferum of Sweat Gland of Caruncle: A Unique Case Report.

Syringocystadenoma papilliferum (SP) is a rare benign hamartomatous malformation of skin which arises from apocrine or eccrine sweat glands. Skin of the head and neck is the usual site for this but rarely involves the eyelids. It is also called as a childhood tumor since it usually appears at birth or during puberty. The diagnosis is confirmed on histopathological examination after surgical excision. We are first to report a case of SP involving the caruncle in an elderly female.

Surgical treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis by suction-curettage of sweat glands.

UNLABELLED: Suction curettage is a dermatologic surgery technique for the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis, which is becoming more popular. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to describe the current technique of removal of axillary sweat glands, and evaluate its efficacy and safety. CONCLUSION: Suction-curettage of sweat glands is a minimally invasive surgical technique that is easy to perform, safe, has high rates of success and relatively few side-effects. It is generally well tolerated by patients and requires shorter time away from daily activities, when compared with other surgi…

Abolished InsP3R2 function inhibits sweat secretion in both humans and mice.

There are 3 major sweat-producing glands present in skin; eccrine, apocrine, and apoeccrine glands. Due to the high rate of secretion, eccrine sweating is a vital regulator of body temperature in response to thermal stress in humans; therefore, an inability to sweat (anhidrosis) results in heat intolerance that may cause impaired consciousness and death. Here, we have reported 5 members of a consanguineous family with generalized, isolated anhidrosis, but morphologically normal eccrine sweat glands. Whole-genome analysis identified the presence of a homozygous missense mutation in ITPR2, which…

Human elimination of phthalate compounds: blood, urine, and sweat (BUS) study.

BACKGROUND: Individual members of the phthalate family of chemical compounds are components of innumerable everyday consumer products, resulting in a high exposure scenario for some individuals and population groups. Multiple epidemiological studies have demonstrated statistically significant exposure-disease relationships involving phthalates and toxicological studies have shown estrogenic effects in vitro. Data is lacking in the medical literature, however, on effective means to facilitate phthalate excretion. METHODS: Blood, urine, and sweat were collected from 20 individuals (10 healthy p…

Histopathological and immunohistochemical studies of apocrine sweat gland adenocarcinomas in cats.

Seven adenocarcinomas of apocrine sweat glands among the 67 cutaneous tumours of cats were evaluated between 1980 and 2005. Histopathologically, three tumours were solid, tubular, tubular-ductal, tubular-cystic and papillar-cystic types were also diagnosed each one. Cuboidal and squamous epithelial cells surrounding the cystic lumina and their papillar extensions into the cyst lumens were evident in almost all tumour types. Besides, fibrovascular stroma which surrounding neoplastic foci showed proliferation and stromal invasion. Immunohistochemical features of these tumours were examined with …

Evaluation of sudomotor function in diabetes using the dynamic sweat test.

BACKGROUND: The study of sudomotor function represents a useful tool to evaluate autonomic disorders. Currently available tests allow either the measurement of sweat output from the whole body or selected small skin locations over time, or quantification of the number and size of sweat drops at a fixed time after stimulation. We devised a dynamic sweat test (DST) that measures at the same time sweat gland density, distribution of active glands, and sweat rate, and applied it to the evaluation of sudomotor function in diabetes. METHODS: The DST was used to evaluate sweating in the forearm of 1…

Axillary hair removal with 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser increases sweat production.

BACKGROUND: Laser-assisted hair removal has become a popular treatment for eradication of body hair. Many studies have been published concerning the safety and efficacy of several laser systems. Adverse events are hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, erythema, oedema, scarring, pain and blistering. Changes in sweating have not previously been reported. AIM: To investigate the effects on axillary sweating of hair removal by a 1064-nm neodymium:yttrium-aluminium-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser. METHODS: The sweating function of both axillae was evaluated objectively by the iodine starch test for planime…

[Abnormal sweat test in patient with Diabetes Insipidus unresponsive to ADH].

Increased sweat concentrations (92, 76 and 80 mEq/l) were observed in a 7-year-old boy with pitressin-resistant diabetes insipidus. All previous observations of elevated sweat electrolytes in diabetes insipidus have been in infants less than 10 months of age. The sweat test is an exceptionally reliable, sensitive and specific test for the diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis. Pitressin-resistant diabetes insipidus is one of the diseases associated with elevated sweat test results.

The extractability of Cr(VI) from contaminated soil in synthetic sweat.

Hexavalent chromium is a common skin irritant that can cause contact dermatitis in sensitized individuals. Soil samples from two chromium waste sites having different Cr(VI) concentrations were extracted in synthetic sweat solutions over a pH range of 4 to 8 and analyzed for Cr(VI). These extractions were performed to determine the potential availability of Cr(VI) from contaminated soils upon contact with human sweat. The samples were also extracted using the EPA Method 3060 alkaline digestion. Overall, hexavalent chromium was readily extractable from both samples in the solutions tested. One …

Decreased sweat-gland number and function in patients with alopecia areata.

In this study the number and function of sweat glands on the dorsum of the hand and foot were evaluated using a silastic imprint method. Twenty patients, 11 females and nine males with either alopecia areata, alopecia totalis, or alopecia universalis were included in the study. Patients showed a significant decrease in activated sweat-gland number and function compared to matched controls (P less than 0.001). There was no significant relationship between the degree of sweat-gland dysfunction and extent of hair loss, concurrent illnesses, or treatment. These findings suggest that eccrine sweat-…
