Limb joint soundness was examined in 40 pigs loaded into a wooden box cart and 40 control pigs not subjected to loading. On postmortem examination, eight loaded pigs showed osteochondritis dissecans in their medial humeral condyles, suggesting that porcine joints are vulnerable to osteochondral lesions when mechanically overloaded. Prevention of trauma by careful handling of pigs during penning and transportation should help to control joint lesions and lameness.

Dwarfism was observed in a group of 30 crossbred pigs. Affected pigs had short limbs and retarded growth. Reduced long-bone length as well as flattening and caudal rotation of the humeral head and the distal femoral condyles were seen at necropsy. Metaphyseal growth plates in vertebrae were narrow and, in long bones, were closed prematurely. There was a sparing of growth plates in traction epiphyses. Vitamin A toxicosis was considered as a possible cause.

Continuous eighth-month deratization was carried out on an industrial swine breeding complex, having great numbers of the black rat (R. rattus). Anticoagulants were chiefly used, maintaining permanent sites of poisonous baits. The lowering of rat numbers was followed up at two-month intervals in the individual productional sectors. The various roles of the water-soluble vitamins (including choline and vitamin C) in diseases of swine are outlined. The most important role is in the prevention of deficiency disease; another important role is in relation to the immune response. Deficiency signs relating to each vitamin are described and the metabolism of each vitamin is outlined. Recent estimates of requirements are set out, together with suggestions on supplementation of practical diets for swine.

The prevalence of reactors to different serovars of Leptospira interrogans was determined in 117 swine premises in Quebec. A total of 926 sera were tested, using the microscopic agglutination method, against six leptospiral serovars: pomona, icterohaemorrhagiae, grippotyphosa, hardjo, canicola and ballum. Of the sera tested, 30 (3.2%) reacted to one of the three following serovars: pomona (2%), icterohaemorrhagiae (1.1%) and ballum (0.1%).

Twenty colostrum-fed piglets from three sows were separated from the sows 24 hours after birth and were randomly divided into five groups of four piglets each. Every piglet in each of four test groups was orally inoculated with about 10(10) colony forming units of Salmonella typhimurium, Salmonella choleraesuis var Kunzendorf or one of two isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae. Transmissible gastro-enteritis is a virus-caused diarrhoeal disease of swine which may result in up to a total loss among newborn animals. Changes are, primarily, of pathologicoanatomic nature and take place in the small intestine. The epithelium of the intestinal villi is completely destroyed, and diarrhoea is the result. Studied were sera of 12 experimentally infected pigs from the 15th to the 365th day after their treatment with moderate and massive doses of Trichinella spiralis. A 2-stage surgical procedure for chronic intestinal, vascular, and lymphatic sampling in miniature swine is described. Cannulas were placed in the jejunum and ileum, followed by a 2nd implantation of indwelling catheters in the portal and hepatic veins, caudal vena cava, abdominal aorta, and cisterna chyli. The techniques used proved that miniature swine can be surgically adapted to meet experimental requirements.
