MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING PERFUSION TECHNIQUE IN THE EVALUATION OF ACHILLES TENDON INJURY IN RABBITS.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) in the experimental model of Achilles tendon injury. METHODS: Twelve white male adults New Zealand rabbits were divided into two groups, a group with resection of the central portion of the Achilles tendon (n = 8) and a control group (n = 4). Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) was performed 4 weeks after the surgical procedure, followed by histological analysis of the tendons. RESULTS: The main finding of this study was the difference (p < 0.001) in peak cont

[Injuries of ligaments and tendons of foot and ankle : What every radiologist should know].

Injuries of the ligaments and tendons of the ankle and foot are among the most common musculoskeletal injuries. A correct and precise description of the pathology and possible accompanying injuries is essential for treatment planning by trauma and orthopedic surgeons. While X‑ray is used to exclude fractures, ultrasound is a very useful tool to assess the ligaments and tendons. For the radiologist, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is invaluable regarding the correct assessment of (partial) ruptures, as well as for evaluating accompanying injuries. The aim of the present overview is to provide

Bridge Plate Failure with Extensor Tendon Injury: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Dorsal spanning plate fixation is an increasingly popular method of fixation for certain distal radius fractures. Published outcomes are encouraging, but complications are still reported. METHODS: We present a case report of a 26-year-old woman with spanning plate breakage and extensor pollicis longus (EPL) metallosis, fraying, and near-complete rupture. The patient's unsuccessful follow-up led to this complication. Metallosis and damage to the extensor indices (EI) and distal extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL) were intraoperative obstacles for tendon transfer to restore EPL fu

Evaluation of Stem Cell Therapies in a Bilateral Patellar Tendon Injury Model in Rats.

Regenerative medicine provides novel alternatives to conditions that challenge traditional treatments. The prevalence and morbidity of tendinopathy across species, combined with the limited healing properties of this tissue, have prompted the search for cellular therapies and propelled the development of experimental models to study their efficacy. Umbilical cord matrix-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UCM-MSC) are appealing candidates because they are abundant, easy to collect, circumvent the ethical concerns and risk of teratoma formation, yet resemble primitive embryonic stem cells more clos

A survey of extensor pollicis longus tendon injury at the time of distal radius fractures.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to investigate the presence or absence, incidence, and degree of extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon injury by visual confirmation of the EPL at the time of osteosynthesis for distal radius fractures. METHODS: The subjects were 25 patients (5 males and 20 females; mean age: 56 years) with distal radius fracture that had a dorsal roof fragment. During osteosynthesis using a volar locking plate, the third compartment was exposed in order to determine the EPL injury. The survey items in this study were: incidences of the forms of EPL injury (1: absent,

[Tendon transfers to restore hand function following peripheral nerve injury in the arm].

Three patients, a woman aged 33 years, a man aged 42 and a woman aged 66, had a loss of hand function. This was due to denervation of a peripheral nerve, in essence the radial, ulnar and median nerves respectively. In the first two cases this was caused by trauma and in the third by compression neuropathy. The problems were loss of wrist and finger extension (a dropping hand) in the first, loss of intrinsic muscle function and thumb adduction in the second and loss of opposition in the third patient. Tendon transfers were performed by diverting a tendon insertion of a still functional muscle t

[The most frequent tendon injury: the "mallet finger". Review, therapeutic concept and results].

This study covers treatment and after-treatment of 126 extensor tendon injuries of the DIP-joint in 125 patients over a period of 4 years. Tendon injuries were classified into 4 types and the final results were evaluated using a modified Riedeberger and Zeumer scale. In recent subcutaneous tendon injuries conservative therapy is indicated, depending on the primary extension deficit (less than 20 degrees modified Stack splint, greater than 20 degrees Mommsen plaster of Paris or special dressing). Chip fractures should be stabilized by pull-out suture.

Occupational therapy management of tendon transfers in persons with spinal cord injury quadriplegia.

Upper extremity surgical reconstruction can play an important role In helping the spinal cord injured quadriplegic patient achieve maximum independence in a variety of activities of daily living. The transfer of the brachioradialis to the extensor carpi radialis brevis, the brachioradialis to the flexor pollicis longus, and the posterior deltoid to the triceps each provide opportunities for functional improvement in this patient group. The occupational therapist's understanding of functional potentials and problems unique to spinal cord injury provides a realistic perspective to the team on po

The subacromial bursa modulates tendon healing after rotator cuff injury in rats.

Rotator cuff injuries result in more than 500,000 surgeries annually in the United States, many of which fail. These surgeries typically involve repair of the injured tendon and removal of the subacromial bursa, a synovial-like tissue that sits between the rotator cuff and the acromion. The subacromial bursa has been implicated in rotator cuff pathogenesis and healing. Using proteomic profiling of bursa samples from nine patients with rotator cuff injury, we show that the bursa responds to injury in the underlying tendon. In a rat model of supraspinatus tenotomy, we evaluated the bursa's effec

Surgical approach on combined chronic patellar tendon and bicruciate knee ligament injury.

A combined injury of the patellar tendon and both the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments is disabling. It directly affects knee kinematics and biomechanics, presenting a considerable surgical challenge. In this complex and uncommon injury, decision-making should take into account the surgeon's experience and consider one- or two-stage surgery, tendon graft, graft fixation, and rehabilitation protocol. This manuscript discusses the surgical approach based on a comprehensive understanding of the patellar tendon and bicruciate biomechanics to guide which structures should be reconstructed

Running-Related Achilles Tendon Injury: A Prospective Biomechanical Study in Recreational Runners.

There are relatively few running studies that have attempted to prospectively identify biomechanical risk factors associated with Achilles tendon (AT) injuries. Therefore, the aim was to prospectively determine potential running biomechanical risk factors associated with the development of AT injuries in recreational, healthy runners. At study entry, 108 participants completed a set of questionnaires. They underwent an analysis of their running biomechanics at self-selected running speed. The incidence of AT running-related injuries (RRI) was assessed after 1-year using a weekly questionnaire

Novel CO2-encapsulated Pluronic F127 hydrogel for the treatment of Achilles tendon injury.

Nonsurgical treatment and surgical repairment of injured Achilles tendons seldom restore the wounded tendon to its original elasticity and stiffness. Therefore, we hypothesized that the surgically repaired Achilles tendon can achieve satisfactory regeneration by applying multi-drug encapsulated hydrogels. In this study, a novel bupivacaine-eluting carbon dioxide-encapsulated Pluronic F127 hydrogel (BC-hydrogel) was developed for the treatment of Achilles tendon injuries. The rheological properties of BC-hydrogel were measured. A high-performance liquid chromatography assay was used to assess t
