High-performance ion chromatography (HPIC) is first successfully used to analyze tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) in this work. The TCs are well separated on a solvent compatible polymeric cation-exchange column within 12 min. Isocratic elution with acetonitrile-hydrochloride is very advantageous for routine analysis. Separations of various tetracycline mixtures by high-performance capillary electrophoresis (HPCE) and a new form of electrochromatography (CEC) are compared. The new CEC method involves etching the inner wall of the capillary surface with an appropriate reagent (ammonium dihydrogen fluoride) in order to produce a significant increase in surface area. Fifty strains of Mycoplasma pneumoniae were tested for susceptibility to new quinolones, tetracyclines, and macrolides. Temafloxacin, ofloxacin, and ciprofloxacin possessed the most mycoplasmacidal activity against these organisms. The MBC for 50% of the strains (MBC50)-to-MIC50 ratio for each of these drugs was 4. The MBC50-to-MIC50 ratios for the tetracyclines and macrolides were markedly higher, within a range of 32 to 2,000. On the basis of these results, temafloxacin and ofloxacin might be promising antimicrobial agents for the treatment of mycoplasmal infection.

The microtiter plate system for turbidimetric assay of chlortetracycline (CTC) and oxytetracycline (OTC) levels in feeds uses a 96 well microtiter plate, a multichannel pipette, and an ELISA reader to measure turbidity. Patients with psoriasis vulgaris (462) were studied by questionnaire to find the effect on psoriasis of drug therapy for intercurrent diseases or focal infections. Of 462 patients with psoriasis, in 76 (16.45%) the disease became more severe during drug therapy. The occurrence of genes conferring resistance to tetracyclines in the organic pig gut was assessed through the metagenomic approach. Of 9,000 bacterial artificial chromosome clones analyzed, 10 were identified as carrying the known tet(C), tet(W), and tet(40) genes, as well as novel genes encoding resistance to the tetracyclines minocycline and doxycycline.
