Understanding the psychology of mobile gambling: A behavioural synthesis.

This manuscript reviews the extant literature on key issues related to mobile gambling and considers whether the potential risks of harm emerging from this platform are driven by pre-existing comorbidities or by psychological processes unique to mobile gambling. We propose an account based on associative learning that suggests this form of gambling is likely to show distinctive features compared with other gambling technologies. Smartphones are a rapidly growing platform on which individuals can gamble using specifically designed applications, adapted websites or text messaging. This review co…

SmokefreeTXT for Homeless Smokers: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Homeless smokers want to quit smoking but face numerous barriers to doing so, including pervasive smoking among peers and a lack of social support for quitting. An SMS (short message service) text messaging intervention could address these challenges by providing virtual daily support for homeless smokers who are trying to quit but coping with multiple triggers to smoke. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess whether a free SMS text messaging program, added to evidence-based pharmacotherapy and counseling, improved smoking abstinence among homeless adult smokers. METHODS: From Oct…

Mobile instant messaging supported brief physical exercise intervention for smoking cessation: a community-based, cluster randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Physical exercise has been used to assist smoking cessation, but supervised programmes are bounded by limited scalability and generalisability. Mobile instant messaging (MIM) offers a scalable platform for delivering exercise support with minimal supervision. We assessed the effectiveness of MIM-supported brief physical exercise intervention on smoking cessation. METHODS: In this two-arm, parallel, cluster randomised controlled trial, we recruited daily smokers aged 18 years or older from 70 community sites in Hong Kong from June to October 2022. Sites were randomised (1:1) to e

Instant messaging-based digital health interventions for diabetes management: a domain-structured systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Instant messaging delivered through social platforms is increasingly used to support diabetes self-management. However, evidence remains difficult to interpret because trials vary widely in platform choice, intervention design, outcome constructs, and measurement instruments. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize the effects of instant-messaging interventions for diabetes across pre-specified outcome domains, and to explore whether platform type, follow-up duration, and study size help explain variation in effect estimates. METHODS: We searched seven databases (2010-2025) for randomized contr

Targeted Behavior Change Communication Using a Mobile Health Platform to Increase Uptake of Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets Among Pregnant Women in Tanzania: Hati Salama "Secure Voucher" Study Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a significant cause of maternal and neonate morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) represent an important component of malaria prevention and can decrease the adverse health outcomes associated with malaria infection during pregnancy. Voucher programs have been successfully implemented for a variety of initiatives across sub-Saharan Africa, including the distribution of subsidized LLINs in Tanzania. However, mobile messaging for behavior change communication (BCC), in combination with an e-voucher program, has not been

Tracking and Profiling Repeated Users Over Time in Text-Based Counseling: Longitudinal Observational Study With Hierarchical Clustering.

BACKGROUND: Due to their accessibility and anonymity, web-based counseling services are expanding at an unprecedented rate. One of the most prominent challenges such services face is repeated users, who represent a small fraction of total users but consume significant resources by continually returning to the system and reiterating the same narrative and issues. A deeper understanding of repeated users and tailoring interventions may help improve service efficiency and effectiveness. Previous studies on repeated users were mainly on telephone counseling, and the classification of repeated user

Essential Coaching for Every Mother Tanzania (ECEM-TZ): Protocol for a Type 1 Hybrid Effectiveness-Implementation Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite global goals to improve maternal, newborn, and child health outcomes, mortality and morbidity continue to be a concern, particularly during the postnatal period in low- and middle-income countries. While mothers have the responsibility of providing ongoing care for newborns at home, they often receive insufficient newborn care education in Tanzania. Mobile health via text messaging is an ever-growing approach that may address this gap and provide timely education. OBJECTIVE: We aim to evaluate a text message intervention called Essential Coaching for Every Mother Tanzania …

Estimating the Prevalence and Identifying the Correlates of Sexting Behaviors Among Cambodian Male Adolescents.

Male youths are more likely to experience peer pressure that encourages them to engage in risky behaviors than female youths, and this pressure can lead to an increased risk of sexting among male youths. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of and factors associated with sexting among Cambodian male youths. The correlational cross-sectional study design was utilized. This study surveyed 647 Cambodian male youths aged 15 to 24 years. The measurement included sending or receiving messages (sexts) that contain sexually explicit messages, images, or videos, and affecting factors to sexti
