Haemoparasitic diseases have long been considered as a major problem to efficient sheep and goats production in Iran. Theileriosis due to Theileria hirci and babesiosis due to Babesia ovis and B. motasi are the most pathogenic protozoa. B. crassa, Anaplasma ovis and Eperythrozoon ovis are usually non-pathogenic and do not cause any apparent problem. The major tick genera found on sheep and goats are Hyalomma, Rhipicephalus, Haemaphysalis, Ixodes and rarely Dermacentor distributed in all part of Iran. Our studies indicate that only Hyalomma ticks transmit Theileria species but the others transm

A general review of the tick-borne diseases of sheep and goats is given, with the emphasis on those thought to be of greatest economic importance. These include babesiosis, theileriosis, cowdriosis, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, Nairobi sheep diseases and tick paralysis. A commented list of tick-borne diseases and their vectors is presented. It is stressed that large gaps remain in our knowledge of the real importance in the field of many of these diseases, especially in local stock.

A study was carried out on piroplasms of cattle in the Macedonia region of Greece. During 1984-1986, 602 serum samples were collected from cattle in 33 localities. Blood smears were also prepared from 50 of the animals in 13 localities. The indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test revealed that 41.4% of cattle sera were positive to Theileria orientalis, 2.0% to Theileria annulata, 21.6% to Babesia bovis, 15.2% to Babesia bigemina, 5.1% to Babesia major and 2.7% to Babesia divergens. Some of the positive titres were probably due to cross reactions. T. orientalis was widely distributed. T. annul

We report the detection of Theileria annulata, the causative agent of tropical theileriosis, by PCR in blood samples obtained from carrier cattle. The assay employs primers specific for the gene encoding the 30-kDa major merozoite surface antigen of T. annulata. A 721-bp fragment was amplified from blood samples taken monthly from calves experimentally infected with one of four different stocks of T. annulata originating in either Mauritania, Portugal, Spain, or Turkey. At the end of the experiment, five animals carried the infection for 12 months and two animals remained infected for 15 month

Western blot analysis of Theileria annulata antigens was carried out using sera collected from cattle which had been immunised and challenged with either T. annulata sporozoites or schizont-infected cells. Three antigens between 71 and 73 kDa proved to be common to the three stages of parasite studied: sporozoites, schizonts and piroplasms. An antigen was found at 32 kDa which was specific to T. annulata piroplasms. Results were reproducible using sera from Morocco and the UK. At least one of the proteins at 71-73 kDa, but not that at 32 kDa were also recognised by sera from animals infected w

Theileria annulata, the causative agent of tropical theileriosis, poses a significant threat to cattle industries, a challenge further intensified by increasing drug resistance. In this study, the food-grade phenolic compound octyl gallate (OG) was evaluated for its antitheilerial activity and identified as a potent and selective inhibitor of T. annulata. Comparative screening of gallic acid (GA) derivatives revealed that OG exhibited the strongest activity against T. annulata-transformed cell lines, with IC50 values of 374.0 nM in TaNM cells and 448.7 nM in the buparvaquone-resistant TaXJS ce

The tick Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann, 1901 is a vector of important medical and veterinary pathogens. In New Zealand, it primarily affects livestock, with impacts on animal health and economic productivity, and to date it has been reported only as a vector of Theileria orientalis, which can cause theileriosis in cattle. This exploratory study aimed to investigate the presence of piroplasmids in convenience samples of H. longicornis collected from farmed livestock (cattle, sheep, deer, and horses) across different regions of New Zealand's North Island. A total of 457 ticks were analysed f

PURPOSE: Theileria species are tick-borne, intracellular apicomplexan protozoan parasites that pose a significant threat to livestock health and productivity. Theileria orientalis, the etiological agent of oriental theileriosis, is a benign Theileria species with worldwide distribution, including Algeria, where investigations on its prevalence and genetic diversity in domestic ruminants are limited. This study aimed to investigate the molecular and phylogenetic profiles of Theileria spp. in Algeria.
METHODS: A total of 149 blood samples were collected from cattle, sheep, and goats in Bouira a

BACKGROUND: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) play a pivotal role in host-parasite interactions, particularly in facilitating parasite pathogenesis and immune modulation, and are crucial mediators of intercellular communication. Theileria annulata, an apicomplexan parasite, induces severe alterations in host cells, promoting uncontrolled proliferation, resistance to apoptosis, and immune evasion. Although EVs contribute to these processes, the proteins and small RNA cargo involved in T. annulata infection remain incompletely characterized. In particular, little is known about EV profiles in infecti

Bovine tropical theileriosis, caused by Theileria annulata, is an economically important disease that reduces livestock productivity through decreased milk yield, high morbidity, and mortality, particularly in exotic and cross-bred cattle. Timely diagnosis and treatment are crucial for effectively managing susceptible animals. This study aimed to develop a robust serological diagnostic tool targeting the sporozoite and macroschizont 2 antigen (Spm2), a protein expressed across multiple parasite stages including sporozoites, macroschizonts, and piroplasms. The recombinant Spm2 (rSpm2) protein w

Vector-borne diseases represent various sicknesses that are increasingly significant in human and veterinary health. Among the zoonotic agents transmitted by ticks, infections caused by the intracellular pathogens from the Anaplasmataceae family and piroplasmids (Babesia/Theileria spp.) are particularly notable due to the substantial economic losses they cause in the livestock sector. A study was carried out to assess the prevalence of these pathogens in ticks from ruminants in the province of Valencia (Eastern Iberian Peninsula). Between 2019 and 2022, 1674 ticks were collected from 163 domes

BACKGROUND: Theileria equi causes equine piroplasmosis, an economically significant disease that affects horses and other equids worldwide. Based on 18S ribosomal RNA (18S rRNA sequences), T. equi can be classified into five genotypes: A, B, C, D, and E. These genotypes have implications for disease management and control. However, no conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays are available to differentiate the genotypes of T. equi. To overcome this limitation, we developed and evaluated PCR assays specific for the detection of each T. equi genotype.
METHODS: A pair of forward and re

Equine Piroplasmosis (EP) is a tick-borne disease caused by three apicomplexan protozoan parasites, Theileria equi (T. equi), Babesia caballi (B. caballi) and T. haneyi, which can cause similar clinical symptoms. There are five known 18S rRNA genotypes of T. equi group (including T. haneyi) and three of B. caballi. Real-time PCR methods for detecting EP based on 18S rRNA analysis have been developed, but these methods cannot detect all genotypes of EP in China, especially genotype A of T. equi. In this study, a duplex real-time PCR detection method was developed for the simultaneous detection

Malawi has an estimated cattle population of 1,884,803 heads, the indigenous Malawi zebu breed accounts for 91.2%, while the exotic and crossbred accounts for the remaining 8.8%. Although ticks and tick-borne diseases are widespread in Malawi, no molecular study has been conducted to investigate the tick-borne Anaplasmataceae and piroplasms infecting cattle. To provide an insight into the current status of tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) of cattle, a molecular survey was conducted in the central and southern regions of Malawi. A total of 191 cattle of which 132 were Malawi zebu, 44 were Holstein F

Babesiosis, theileriosis, anaplasmosis, and heartwater are tick-borne diseases that threaten livestock production in sub-Saharan Africa including Burkina Faso and Benin. For over a decade, these two bordering countries have been facing an invasion of the livestock by the tick Rhipicephalus microplus, a major vector for babesiosis, accidentally introduced in Benin in 2004. The molecular identification of tick-borne pathogens in this border area is of particular interest due to animals seasonal migration between the two countries. In this survey, epidemiological features of ticks and tick-borne

The intraerythrocytic protozoans Theileria equi and Babesia caballi are the causative agents of equine piroplasmosis (EP), one of the most important equine tick-borne diseases due to its significant impact on global international horse trade. Although EP is known to be endemic in Spain, previous phylogenetic studies have only been conducted for limited geographical regions. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic diversity and distribution of these parasite species nationwide. This was performed by amplification of the 18S small subunit (SSU) rRNA gene from 100 EP po

Theileria annulata is the pathogen of bovine tropical theileriosis. It is extremely harmful to the cattle industry, with huge economic losses. The toll-like receptor (TLR) and NOD-like receptor (NLR) signaling pathways are crucial for resistance to infection of the protozoa, such as Plasmodium falciparum, Toxoplasma gondii, and Trypanosoma cruzi. However, the role of these immune-related pathways is unclear during T. annulata infection. In the present study, peripheral blood mononuclear cells and serum were separated from blood samples of calves infected with homogenized tick supernatants carr
