Empyema after anatomic lung resection is rare but causes serious morbidity, particularly if associated with a bronchopleural fistula. Careful assessment of preoperative risk factors and proper surgical technique can minimize risks. Trauma is the leading cause of death in patients younger than 40 years of age. Thoracic injuries are common and often can be managed by tube thoracostomy. In many patients, however, the thoracic injuries must be repaired surgically in one of three time periods: immediate, urgent, or delayed thoracotomy. In this article, we describe the general approach to effectively managing thoracic trauma patients. We review common injuries and scenarios that may be encountered by the surgeon and discuss the considerations and variables that enter into the decision-making process for operative intervention.

Being considered as an uncommon congenital anomaly, pulmonary bronchogenic cyst requires surgical treatment due to its rarity and mortality especially in complicated forms. In the present paper, we are presenting a case report of a giant pulmonary bronchogenic cyst (18 cm × 15 cm × 10 cm) misdiagnosed with loculated pleural effusion. Because of unsuccessful treatment of tube thoracostomy, the patient was scheduled for left thoracotomy. Later giant pulmonary cyst was removed completely without any complications. Histopathology studies revealed a giant bronchogenic cyst with abscess formation.

Amoebiasis is a world-wide parasitic infestation but is more prevalent and virulent in warm countries. Of 33 patients with amoebic liver abscess (ALA) seen over a 5-year period, 24 had intrathoracic complications.
