Dispersal of Hyalomma rufipes by migratory birds in northeastern Spain: Implications for Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever surveillance.

Migratory birds play a crucial role in the long-distance dispersal of ticks and tick-borne pathogens, contributing to the introduction of tick species and pathogens into new areas. Among those ticks, Hyalomma rufipes is a key concern due to its role as a vector of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) and its potential to establish in southern Europe. We assessed tick infestation, CCHFV presence, and both the probability of H. rufipes infestation and its genetic diversity in migratory birds captured at four key stopovers in northeastern Spain Mediterranean (NESM) ecological region dur

Antibodies reactive to Ehrlichia spp. are common in Oklahoma horses.

Abstract Tick infestations and infection with tick-borne agents are commonly recognized in horses in North America, but equine infection with true Ehrlichia spp. has not been described. To determine the degree to which horses in the south-central United States are naturally exposed to and infected with tick-borne disease agents, serum samples were collected at random (n=240) or from horses with active tick infestations (n=73) and tested by immunofluorescence antibody assay (IFA) and/or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for evidence of antibodies reactive to Ehrlichia spp., Anaplasma sp…

Transmission route efficacy and kinetics of Anaplasma phagocytophilum infection in white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus.

Anaplasma phagocytophilum was used to infect Peromyscus leucopus mice by three routes of inoculation: infected tick infestation and intraperitoneal (IP) and subcutaneous (SQ) injection of infected tissue culture cells. A set of 12 mice were infected (four tick, four IP, and four SQ), and blood was drawn at 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 21, 28, 35, and 60 days post-infection and analyzed by use of a quantitative PCR assay to assess the level of infection. An additional set of 108 mice were infected (36 tick, 36 IP, 36 SQ) and euthanized at 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 21, 28, and 35 days post-infection (four mice

Absence of Hemolivia mauritanica (Apicomplexa: Haemogregarinidae) in natural populations of Testudo graeca in Morocco.

During spring 2018, we captured 101 spur-thighed tortoises, Testudo graeca, from seven localities in central Morocco. All tortoises were examined for the presence of blood parasites Hemolivia mauritanica and Hyalomma aegyptium ticks, the known vectors. We looked for H. mauritanica infection by examination of blood smears and by genetic analysis with PCR using extractions from both tortoises and ticks. On all tortoises collected, 71.29% were infested with at least one tick, with a mean infestation intensity of 7.12 ticks/tortoise and maximum of 15.55 ticks/tortoises in Had Draa locality (Essaou

Interpretation of the larval immersion test with ivermectin in populations of the cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus from Colombian farms.

Interpreting in vitro bioassays used to determine resistance against acaricides in Rhipicephalus microplus can be challenging without parall … stance ratio (RR). Ticks were collected from 4 farms, two where ivermectin provided good control of tick infestations and two that claimed lack of efficacy. In two farms where administration of a long-acting ivermectin formulation reduced body tick counts to 45 and 25% of the initial counts at 10-days post-treatment, the RR50 and RR99 were approximately 6 and 20, r …

IL36γ signaling promotes mammalian anti-tick immunity.

Ticks, like Ixodes scapularis, can parasitize a diverse array of vertebrates, favoring natural hosts but feeding opportunistically on others. Natural hosts, as well as permissive hosts such as laboratory mice, tolerate repeated infestations, while many incidental hosts may acquire anti-tick immunity, as first described in guinea pigs. We show that tick-immune guinea pigs display altered dermal cytology and a distinct transcriptome, predominantly upregulating the IL36γ cytokine. Interference with IL36γ signaling, via gene knockdown, chemical inhibition, or its natural antagonist IL36RN, reverse

Spotted fever group Rickettsia, Anaplasma and Coxiella-like endosymbiont in Haemaphysalis ticks from mammals in Thailand.

Ticks are ectoparasites of vertebrates and vectors of various pathogenic microorganisms. In this study, the presence of bacteria and protozoa was evaluated by PCR and DNA sequencing in 233 mammal ticks collected from 8 provinces in Thailand. Sequence and phylogenetic analyses of partial rickettsial ompA, ompB, sca4 and partial Coxiella 16S rRNA, GroEL, rpoB genes clearly revealed, for the first time, a co-infection of SFG Rickettsia belonging to R. massiliae subgroup and Coxiella-like endosymbiont (CLE), Cox-hein, in a male of Haemaphysalis heinrichi tick infesting Burmese ferret-badger in Loe

Demonstration of Anaplasma marginale transmission to cattle through the intra-transstadial and by unfed larvae of Rhipicephalus microplus routes, with subsequent calculation of infection rates.

The objective of this study was to assess the infection rate of Anaplasma marginale in cattle by Rhipicephalus microplus. Two experiments were conducted for this purpose. Experiment 1 evaluated the infection rate by the intrastadial and transstadial routes. Calves naturally infected with A. marginale were infested with R. microplus and were called "positive with ticks" (PWT). These PWT animals were housed together with A. marginale-negative, tick-free calves, called "negative and free-tick" (NFT) for 31 consecutive days. On day 31, the PWT animals were removed from the pens and returned to the

Laboratory evaluation of the efficacy and speed of kill of lotilaner (CredelioTM) against Ixodes ricinus ticks on cats.

BACKGROUND: Lotilaner, approved for dogs as a chewable tablet formulation, has separately been developed for oral use in cats (CredelioTM chewable tablets for cats), to meet the need for an easy to use, safe and rapidly effective parasiticide. It is a valid cat- and owner-friendly alternative to topical products. This manuscript describes three pivotal laboratory studies assessing the efficacy and speed of kill of lotilaner in cats against Ixodes ricinus ticks following a single oral administration, at a dose rate close to 6 mg/kg. METHODS: In Studies 1 and 2, efficacy and safety were evaluat

Reproductive aspects of Haemaphysalis leporis-palustris.

The adult stage of Haemaphysalis leporis-palustris was studied. Two infestations consisted of male and female ticks on two rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). Other two infestations consisted of only female ticks on two O. cuniculus. Females fed without males showed differences in some biological parameters when compared to females fed with males. Parthenogenesis is reported for the first time by one H. leporis-palustris female.

Seasonal dynamics of ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) on horses in the state of São Paulo, Brazil.

Natural tick infestations were assessed every 14 days on horses over a 2-year period. Amblyomma cajennense adult ticks were counted individually, without detachment from the horses. Larvae and nymphs of A. cajennense were collected using a rubber scraper that scratched engorged immature ticks from the host. Adult females of Anocentor nitens larger than 4mm length were counted on the horses. Blood samples were also obtained from the horses every 14 days and macroclimatic data were obtained for the study period. Infestations of A. cajennense demonstrated distinct peaks of activity for each of th…

Status of Dorper sheep as hosts of ectoparasites.

Seventeen ixodid tick species or subspecies have been collected from Dorper sheep in South Africa. The diseases transmitted or the conditions caused by these ticks in sheep are discussed. Although Dorper sheep may be infested with the scab mite, Psoroptes ovis, this does not seem to cause production losses. These sheep may, however, serve as a source of mite infestation for woolled sheep. The majority of Dorper sheep are infested with the larvae of the nasal bot fly, Oestrus ovis, they may also be subject to myiasis caused by the larvae of two calliphorid flies. In certain regions of the count

Migratory passerine birds as reservoirs of Lyme borreliosis in Europe.

To define the role of birds as reservoirs and disseminators of Borrelia spirochetes, we characterized tick infestation and reservoir competence of migratory passerine birds in Sweden. A total of 1,120 immature Ixodes ricinus ticks were removed from 13,260 birds and assayed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for Borrelia, followed by DNA sequencing for species and genotype identification. Distributions of ticks on birds were aggregated, presumably because of varying encounters with ticks along migratory routes. Lyme borreliosis spirochetes were detected in 160 (1.4%) ticks. Borreli

RNA interference screening in ticks for identification of protective antigens.

Ticks are ectoparasites of wild and domestic animals and humans, and are considered to be the most important arthropod vector of pathogens in North America. Development of vaccines directed against tick proteins may effect reduction of tick infestations and transmission of tick-borne pathogens. The limiting step for the development of tick vaccines has been the identification of tick protective antigens. Reverse vaccinology approaches aimed at reducing animal experimentation while allowing for the rapid screening of pools of potential tick vaccine candidates would greatly facilitate progress t…

Alternative strategic control of Rhipicephalus microplus in the Cerrado of Minas Gerais, Brazil, by exploiting abiotic conditions.

This study compared four strategies for controlling Rhipicephalus microplus in steers under field conditions in the savannah Biome (Cerrado) of Brazil, including two control groups: traditional strategic control (T1), palliative control (T2), an alternative experimental strategic control (T3), and pasture spelling during the dry season (T4). Twenty-four Girolando steers were allocated into four groups (n = 6) and monitored for tick infestation over an 11-month period. Efficacy was assessed using cumulative and monthly tick counts on steers, tick-free periods, and indicators of pasture disinfes

Babesia bovis: computer simulation of the relationship between the tick vector, parasite, and bovine host.

Components contributing to the survival of Babesia bovis in its tick vector (Boophilus microplus) and bovine host were identified and their relationship simulated with an interactive BASIC computer program. Estimates for major independent variables (host-finding success, feeding success, filial infection rate, recovery rate) were derived from published laboratory and field data. Values for dependent variables (tick burden, inoculation rate, tick and bovine infection rates) were calculated during successive tick generations until equilibrium conditions were reached. The simulation was used to p

First detection of tick-borne pathogens of dogs from Malta.

The knowledge about the vector-borne infections in domestic dogs has been increasing worldwide. However no studies have been done on hard tick infestation and tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) of dogs present in Malta. Therefore, a total of 99 dogs was selected and inspected between March and July 2013 in 18 urban and 17 rural areas on the islands of Malta and Gozo. All ticks were removed from the dogs and identified. Blood samples were taken and tested for protozoa (Babesia spp. and Hepatozoon spp.) and bacteria (Anaplasma spp., Ehrlichia spp., Rickettsia spp.) by conventional PCR. All of the ticks
