INTRODUCTION: Hydrogen peroxide tooth bleaching is claimed to cause alterations in dental tissue structures. This study investigated the influence of the number of bleaching sessions on pulp tissue in rats.
METHODS: Male Wistar rats were studied in 5 groups (groups 1S-5S) of 10 each, which differed by the number (1-5) of bleaching sessions. In each session, the animals were anesthetized, and 35% hydrogen peroxide gel was applied to 3 upper right molars. Two days after the experimental period, the animals were killed, and their jaws were processed for light microscope evaluation. Pulp tissue r

Purpose: To examine how the accuracy (linear and angular deviation) of implants placed using computer-guided surgery varies in relation to the type of surgical technique (fully guided, half-guided, vs freehand implant placement), bone density (type D1 to D4 bone), and type of support surface (tooth- vs mucosa-supported). Materials and Methods: A total of 32 mandible models were produced (16 partially edentulous and 16 edentulous) using acrylic resin, each calibrated to a different bone density (D1 to D4). Four implants planned using Mguide software were placed in each acrylic resin mandible. A

This micro-CT study analysed 90 mandibular mesial roots with and without a bifid apex. Number of orifices and main apical foramina, main canal counts at coronal/middle/apical thirds, middle mesial canal (MMC) presence, and MB-ML inter-orifice distance in two-orifice roots were measured. The prevalence of MMCs was significantly higher in bifid roots (35.5%) compared to non-bifid roots (11.4%) (p < 0.05). Bifid roots exhibited a significantly higher mean number of apical foramina (2.24 ± 0.43) than non-bifid roots (1.33 ± 0.52) (p < 0.05). In roots with two orifices, the MB-ML inter-orifice dist

The presence of root resorption and its correlated factors are concerns that must be considered in orthodontic planning. This case report describes the orthodontic retreatment of a patient with a dental to facial midline discrepancy, a severe apical root resorption, and with maxillary and mandibular incisors presenting accentuated labial tipping and protrusion. The treatment included self-ligating brackets, maxillary unilateral distalization with skeletal anchorage and a mandibular extraction, followed by retraction. The orthodontic planning was based on simple and efficient mechanics and the

OBJECTIVES: Given the limitations of panoramic radiography for assessing topographic relationship of maxillary teeth with sinus floor, the purpose of this study was to assess signs on panoramic radiography that could predict root protrusion into the sinus.
METHODS: A total of 46 individuals (330 maxillary posterior teeth) who underwent panoramic radiography and CBCT were enrolled. The relationship between the posterior teeth and the maxillary sinus and panoramic radiography signs (projection of the root apices, interruption of the maxillary sinus floor, lamina dura, darkening in the root apic

AIM: To report two cases in which calculus-like material was found on external root surfaces of (i) an extracted root and (ii) an apicected part of a root, both of which were removed due to post-treatment refractory apical periodontitis.
SUMMARY: In each case, there was a fistulous tract, which did not heal after conventional root canal treatment. The first case did not heal even after apical surgery, and subsequent tooth extraction revealed calculus-like material on a root surface of complex anatomy. The second case showed radiographic signs of healing after apicectomy. Histology of the apic

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor commonly occurs in association with the crowns of unerupted teeth. An extrafollicular variant, radiographically in relationship to root apices, has been reported. However, clear association with the root apices at surgery has not been demonstrated. We report a case of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor in the anterior mandible in a 21-year-old woman that presented radiographically at the root apices and at surgery as a radicular cyst. We believe this represents the first reported case of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor presenting as periapical disease both clinically and

Vertical root fractures (VRFs) often occur in endodontically treated teeth and in patients older than 40 years of age. However, VRFs in teeth without endodontic treatment are relatively uncommon. VRFs are difficult to diagnose as the symptoms are non-specific or often delayed. The most common radiographic findings are thickening of the periodontal ligament, deep, localized, vertical bone loss, and localized periradicular bone loss. The explicit feature for detecting VRFs is direct visualization of a radiolucent fracture line on radiographs. However, the fracture line can be difficult to direct

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical effect of sequential therapy for traumatized maxillary central incisor with horizontal mid-root fracture.
METHODS: Twenty maxillary central incisors with horizontal mid-root fracture following dental trauma were included in our study. The distance between root fracture plane and root apical segment was more than 5 mm. The sequential therapy included stabilizing the traumatized incisor with a flexible splint after repositioning the coronal segment of the tooth, temporarily filling with calcium hydroxide after root preparation, sealing the root apex with warm

Root perforations that result in a communication of the root space with the periodontal tissues occasionally occur during endodontic procedures. They may be induced iatrogenically, by resorptive process, or by caries. Identification of root perforations is possible by direct observation of bleeding, indirect bleeding assessment using a paper point, radiography, and an apex locator. Prognosis of a tooth with root perforation depends on the time lapsed before obturation of the perforation, location and size of the lesion, and the sealability of the repair material. Perforation defects may be rep

Autotransplantation is a well-known method used in oral surgery. However, risk of failure, most commonly resulting from root resorption of the transplanted tooth or ankylosis, is quite high. Piezosurgery with specific device tip vibration frequencies enables selective tissue cutting, and therefore, tooth buds or teeth can easily be removed from bones with little injury to periodontal fibers or bud follicles.

AIM: To evaluate the diagnosis of simulated external root resorption in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images acquired with different voxel sizes, then reconstructed with the same voxel size.
METHODOLOGY: Buccal, mesial and distal root surfaces of twenty single-rooted premolar teeth were evaluated for the presence or absence of simulated resorption defects. Images were obtained using a Classic i-CAT CBCT unit with two different voxel sizes (0.25 and 0.30 mm). Then all images were reconstructed to 0.25 mm voxel size. The McNemar's test was applied to evaluate the agreement between the tw

The aim of this investigation was to compare root resorption in the same individual after application of continuous intrusive and extrusive forces. In nine patients (mean age 15.3 years), the maxillary first premolars were randomly intruded or extruded with a continuous force of 100 cN for eight weeks. Eleven maxillary first premolars from six randomly selected orthodontic patients served as controls. Root resorption was determined using scanning electron microscopy. Quantitative assessment of the percentage of resorbed area of the total root surface was performed on composite micrographs. The

BACKGROUND: Achieving and maintaining correct working length is critical to success in endodontic therapy. This involves placing the file in to the canal to feel the apical constriction, preparing the canal upto that extent and then filling the entire canal upto the apical constriction with gutta percha points. Detection of the apical constriction is affected if the coronal part of the canal is narrow or obstructed due to dentine deposition. This usually happens in curved canals and gives the operator a false feeling of the apical constriction. The aim of this study was to compare the effect o
