Evaluating general practitioner attitudes towards screening, risk assessment, and diagnosis of periodontal diseases and tooth wear in the UK.

This study investigated UK general dental practitioners' habits and attitudes toward screening, risk assessment, and diagnosis of periodontal diseases and tooth wear in adult patients during routine examinations. Two primary recruiters, UK-based final year post-graduate students enrolled on the MSc in Aesthetic Dentistry at King's College London distributed a piloted, paper-based, 14-statement questionnaire via secondary recruiters to UK general dentists. The latter participants were based at local dental practices or attending post-graduate courses. The secondary recruiters circulated and col

Erosive effects of pediatric liquid medicinal syrups on primary enamel: An in vitro comparative study.

CONTEXT: The use of liquid medicinal syrups in childhood is high owing to the reasons that children suffer from illness quite often. The acidic component in the formulations may cause erosion to the dental tissues. AIMS: The aim of this study is to evaluate the erosive potential of pediatric liquid medicinal syrups on the deciduous teeth. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of sixty extracted/exfoliated noncarious deciduous molars were used. Four medical syrups were used (viz., 1 - artificial saliva [control], 2 - Ferium XT, 3 - Crocin syrup, 4 - Ambrolite-D) and the teeth were equally divided int

Laxative-Induced Contact Dermatitis.

A 5-year-old female with Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathy and a history of constipation presented to the emergency department with a new blistering buttocks rash, which was initially concerning for nonaccidental burn. Upon further investigation, it was found that Ex-Lax had been given to the patient for constipation. This had resulted in a bowel movement, which led to an irritant dermatitis. The patient was eventually diagnosed with senna-induced erosive diaper dermatitis. This case report highlights the importance of a thorough history and physical examination to prevent an unnecessary child ab

Biological activities of lipopolysaccharides from oral bacteria and their relevance to the pathogenesis of chronic periodontitis.

Chronic periodontitis is a major cause of tooth loss in adults and is a consequence of the colonisation of the subgingival region by organisms such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia and Fusobacterium nucleatum. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a constituent of the cell walls of all of these bacteria and is found in large quantities on the surfaces of periodontally-diseased teeth. LPS from oral bacteria has a marked effect on most types of cell found in the periodontal tissues including macrophages, lymphocytes, fibroblasts and osteoblasts. Fibroblasts and macrophages respond to ora

Oral diseases and socio-demographic factors in adolescents living in Maasai population areas of Tanzania: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Oral diseases may cause serious health problems, especially in socially disadvantaged populations and in low-income countries. In populations living in the rural areas of Tanzania there is paucity of reports on oral health. The study aim was to estimate the prevalence, severity and socio-demographic distribution of oral diseases/conditions in adolescents living in Maasai population areas of Tanzania and to compare oral diseases/conditions between Maasai and non-Maasai ethnic groups. METHODS: A total of 23 schools were randomly selected from 66 rural public primary schools in Mondu

Rehabilitation of the worn dentition with glass-ceramic restorations.

Severe pathologic tooth wear is perceived internationally as an increasing problem based on growing evidence of risks associated with dental hard tissue damage due to erosion, attrition, and abrasion. The defect morphology of these wear-related lesions is different from that of caries lesions. Modern evaluation systems provide detailed quantitative assessment and classification of tooth wear. Against this background, restorative treatment concepts have become significantly more differentiated in recent decades. Direct composite restorations might be preferred for smaller defects and younger pa

Abfraction lesions: etiology, diagnosis, and treatment options.

Abfraction is a type of noncarious cervical lesion (NCCL) characterized by loss of tooth tissues with different clinical appearances. Evidence supports that abfraction lesions, as any NCCLs, have a multifactorial etiology. Particularly, the cervical wear of abfraction can occur as a result of normal and abnormal tooth function and may also be accompanied by pathological wear, such as abrasion and erosion. The interaction between chemical, biological, and behavioral factors is critical and helps to explain why some individuals exhibit more than one type of cervical wear mechanism than others. I

[Mouthwashes: the supply in Belgium reviewed on the basis of recent literature].

In recent days mouthrinses became a more and more popular tool in the oral hygiene regime. Different manufacturers commercialize their products in the grey area between cosmetics and medicine. However, one must realize that these products must be used within the limitations of their potential. The aim of this article is to present a complete overview of mouthrinses--and their active components--available on the Belgian market based on the recent literature. The focus is placed mainly on their antibacterial capacity, but also other indications such as anticariogenic activity, halitosis manageme

Assessment of Nanoscale Configuration of Dentin in Non-carious Cervical Lesions.

Introduction Non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) are structural deformities or tissue loss in the cervical region of teeth, which are closer to the gum line that do not result from caries (tooth decay). On the tooth enamel at the gingival margin, these lesions are frequently seen as V- or U-shaped notches. The causes of NCCLs are multifaceted and involve intricate relationships between chemical, mechanical, and biological elements. The slow loss of enamel and dentin in the cervical area occurs due to mechanical causes like abrasive toothbrushing and occlusal tension, as well as chemical varia
