Arrest of root formation in relation to permanent mandibular incisors: a rare case report.

AIM: To report a rare case of arrested root formation of permanent incisors in a young boy with mixed dentition and its management. BACKGROUND: Traumatic injury to a primary tooth may damage the underlying permanent tooth germ and affect its development. The extent of the malformation depends upon the developmental stage of the permanent tooth and the intensity of trauma. Discoloration and hypoplasia of the crown, dilaceration, root angulation and disturbances in eruption are commonly seen developmental disturbances following trauma. However, partial or complete arrest of root formation is a …

Two cases with supernumerary teeth in lower incisor region.

Abnormalities in number of teeth are occasionally noted in clinical cases. Many theories have been proposed as regards the causes of the occurrence of supernumerary teeth, including atavism theory, mechanical tooth germ separation theory, tissue induction theory, and dental laminar morphological disturbance theory. However, none of these theories alone offers a sufficient explanation for this phenomenon. The incidence of supernumerary permanent teeth is approximately 1-3%. These are the maxillary anterior teeth, the maxillary molars, and the maxillo-mandibular premolars in terms of descending …

The potential role of chromodomain helicase DNA-binding protein 3 in defining the cervical width by regulating the early growth stage of the apical papilla during tooth development.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the role of the chromodomain helicase DNA-binding protein 3 (CHD3) in tooth morphogenesis in Chd3 kn … Chd3 knockout mice. On postnatal day (PN) 8, the cervical width was narrow before root formation in tooth germs. The number of Ki-67-positive cells decreased in the dental mesenchyme at PN1 and apical papilla at PN8. Chd3 promoted the proliferation of dental mesenchymal cells, but no significant changes were observed in HERS epithelial cells. Chd3 maintained …

Comparative study of MSX-2, DLX-5, and DLX-7 gene expression during early human tooth development.

Msx and Dlx family transcription factors are key elements of craniofacial development and act in specific combinations with growth factors t … human orofacial skeletal structures, including mandible and maxilla bones, Meckel's cartilage, and tooth germs, as shown for DLX-5. DLX-7 expression was restricted to the vestibular lamina and, later on, to the vestibular part of dental epithelium. The comparison of MSX-2, DLX-5, and DLX-7 expression patterns during the early stages of development of differ …

Dental development in the tropical gar (Atractosteus tropicus) and the evolution of vertebrate dentitions.

BACKGROUND: Dentitions have diversified enormously during vertebrate evolution, involving reductions, modifications, or allocations to prey … ment in the tropical gar, Atractosteus tropicus. We follow ontogenetic changes from the initiation, tooth germ addition to the establishment of the larval replacing dentition. We pay attention to the progressive appearance of tooth fields, the emergence of dental patterns, the development of folded dentin morphology, and features related to tooth resorption …

Presence of impacted supernumerary teeth in the Indian population.

A tooth that does not erupt into the dental arch during the anticipated developmental window is said to be impacted. A supernumerary tooth (ST) would be any dentition or odontogenic entity that grows from a tooth germ more often than is typical for a particular area of the dental arch (ST). The study's goal is to determine how commonly impacted supernumerary teeth are present within the Indian community. This research project at the institution which was retrospective was done on dental patients who went to the private dental hospital between March 2020 and March 2021. We looked over the medic…

Developmental arrest of tooth bud after correction of mandibular fracture.

A case of multiple fractures of the mandible following a car accident in a five-year-old patient is reported. The fracture line passed distal to the first molar tooth bud. The fracture was treated by wire osteosynthesis and skeletal fixation. During the ensuing 18 months, a gradual arrest of the development of the first molar tooth bud was radiologically observed. The eruption process had not been disturbed, and the tooth erupted at the age of 6 1/2 years. Since the distal root had completely failed to develop and the mesial roots showed a diminished size, the tooth was extracted. Histopatholo

Development of the rabbit craniomandibular joint in association with tooth eruption.

The adult rabbit craniomandibular joints (CMJs) are stress-bearing joints. The two CMJs and the teeth form an articular triad. In early fetal life the developing triad consists of the CMJ primordia, the tooth germs for the entire set of deciduous teeth, as well as the posterior extensions of the dental lamina, which will give rise to the permanent teeth with no deciduous predecessors. During postnatal life, before occlusion is established, there is a remodelling stage in which the CMJ builds up its matrix components such as collagenous and elastic fibres, proteoglycans and type II collagen. Re…

Three-Dimensional-Printed Splint for Use in Pediatric Mandibular Fracture.

Mandibular fractures are the most common type, accounting for about 71% of facial fractures in children. The mandible is the only movable bone in the craniomaxillofacial region. The injury of the mandible has a serious impact on the functions of children's mouth opening, chewing, pronunciation, and occlusion. Therefore, the treatment of children's mandibular fractures is particularly important. Because of the characteristics of children with permanent tooth germ blocking and strong skeletal development, the treatment methods of adults cannot simply be used in children with mandibular fractures…

Orthopedic and orthodontic treatment in central giant cell granuloma treated with calcitonin.

Central giant cell granuloma of the jaw is a benign lesion of unknown etiology that occurs with very low frequency. It mainly occurs in children and young adults and is more common in the mandible. The most common treatment is surgical removal; however, alternative therapies (intralesional injections of corticosteroids, interferon alpha, and calcitonin) have been used in order to avoid undesirable damage to the jaws and teeth. The lesion may cause root resorption, tooth germ displacement, and other dental problems, as well as malocclusion that must be treated orthodontically. The orthodontic, …

Effect of a high dose of fluoride on resorbing osteoclasts in vivo.

Histomorphometric analysis of osteoclasts resorbing bone above the erupting first rat molar tooth germ was made at 1, 2, 6, 24, and 48 h following systemic administration of a single high dose of sodium fluoride. Compared to the number of osteoclasts in control rats, a significant reduction was observed in the number of actively resorbing osteoclasts in fluoride-injected rats at 2 and 6 h after dose administration, after which a gradual increase to control levels was observed. A locally increased number of inactive osteoclasts, not attached to bone surfaces, accompanied the reduced number of a…

Characterization of a novel mutation in PAX9 gene in a family with non-syndromic dental agenesis.

BACKGROUND: Dental agenesis is the most common developmental anomaly in man and may present either as an isolated trait or as part of a synd … altered expression of one or more of these factors during initiation and early morphogenesis of the tooth germ, and the first actors identified were MSX1 and PAX9. DESIGN: In this study, we focalized on a Tunisian family with a non-syndromic autosomal dominant form of tooth agenesis. In order to screen for the eventual genetic cause of dental agenesis in th …

Erupted complex odontoma delayed eruption of permanent molar.

Odontomas, benign tumors that develop in the jaw, rarely erupt into the oral cavity. We report an erupted odontoma which delayed eruption of the first molar. The patient was a 10-year-old Japanese girl who came to our hospital due to delayed eruption of the right maxillary first molar. All the deciduous teeth had been shed. The second premolar on the right side had erupted, but not the first molar. Slight inflammation of the alveolar mucosa around the first molar had exposed a tooth-like, hard tissue. Panoramic radiography revealed a radiopaque mass indicating a lesion approximately 1 cm in di
