Severe wear and tooth loss in wild ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta): a function of feeding ecology, dental structure, and individual life history.

The ring-tailed lemurs at Beza Mahafaly Special Reserve, Madagascar, exhibit a high frequency of severe wear and antemortem tooth loss. As part of a long-term study, we collected dental data on 83 living adult ring-tailed lemurs during 2003 and 2004. Among these individuals, 192 teeth were scored as absent. The most frequently missing tooth position is M1 (24%). As M1 is the first tooth to erupt, its high frequency of absence (primarily a result of wear) is not remarkable. However, the remaining pattern of tooth loss does not correlate with the sequence of eruption. We suggest that this patter…

[Early loss of primary molar and permanent tooth germ caused by the use of devitalizer during primary molar root canal therapy: Two cases report].

Devitalization has been widely used in the root canal therapy of primary and permanent teeth in China more than ten years ago. With the development of local anesthetic drugs and injection technologies, this treatment method with high potential risks has been gradually abandoned. However, a questionnaire survey targeted all the participants at the 2018 China Pediatric Dentistry Conference showed that the devitalizer utilization proportion was still as high as 38.1% (383/1 005), even though the ratio was much lower than 75.5% (105/139) in 2003. These doctors had pay more attention to tissue burn

Smoking, tooth loss and oral hygiene practices have significant and site-specific impacts on the microbiome of oral mucosal surfaces: a cross-sectional study.

We investigated bacterial colonisation patterns of healthy mucosa (buccal, tongue, palate and floor of mouth) in a cohort of adults in order to determine how smoking, tooth loss, plaque levels and oral hygiene practices impacted on mucosal colonisation. A total of 322 swabs were recovered from 256 participants, of whom 46% were current smokers. We analysed colonization by sequencing the V1-V3 regions of the 16S rRNA gene. Palate and tongue microbiomes generally exhibited greater biodiversity than buccal and floor of mouth. Although Neisseria, Lautropia and Haemophilus spp. showed reduced abund…

The potential prognostic value of some periodontal factors for tooth loss: a retrospective multilevel analysis on periodontal patients treated and maintained over 10 years.

BACKGROUND: The great challenge in clinical periodontology is assigning a prognosis to a periodontally affected patient. Many different factors can affect the long-term maintenance of periodontally compromised teeth. The main questions usually considered by the periodontist are: 1) Will a tooth lose more bone in the future? 2) Will the tooth itself be lost in the future? The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the value of some clinical, genetic, and radiographic variables in predicting tooth loss in periodontal patients (aged 40 to 60 years) treated and maintained for 10 years…

Socio-economic and behavioural risk factors for tooth loss from age 18 to 26 among participants in the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study.

The serine/threonine kinase glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) was initially identified and studied in the regulation of glycogen synthesis. In some cases, suppression of GSK-3 activity by phosphorylation by Akt and other kinases has been associated with cancer progression. In these cases, GSK-3 has tumor suppressor functions. In other cases, GSK-3 has been associated with tumor progression by stabilizing components of the beta-catenin complex. In these situations, GSK-3 has oncogenic properties. The Raf kinase inhibitor protein (RKIP) has been reported to be under expressed in many cancers an

Tooth Loss Complexity in Partially Edentulous Type 2 Diabetes and Non-diabetic Patients Based on the Prosthodontic Diagnostic Index (PDI) Classification: An Institution-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: The complexity of tooth loss not only compromises oral function and appearance but also has a detrimental impact on oral health-related quality of life. Untreated caries and chronic periodontal disease often lead to partial dentition. This prevalence is further exacerbated by the rising incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). These bidirectional effects between diabetes and oral health accelerate tooth loss, necessitating varying levels of prosthodontic intervention to restore oral function and improve patient outcomes. This study aimed to find a correlation between diabetes an…
