Catastrophic injuries in pole vaulters: a prospective 9-year follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: A prior review of catastrophic pole vaulting injuries from 1982 through 1998 revealed an average of 2.0 injuries per year, with 69% (1.38 per year) of the injuries secondary to athletes landing off the sides or back of the landing pad and 25% (0.5 per year) from athletes landing in the vault box. In 2003, several rule changes for the sport of pole vaulting were mandated, including enlarging the minimum dimensions of the landing pad. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: Our goals were to (1) identify the post-2003 rule change incidence and profile of catastrophic pole vaulting injuries through 2011

Cognitive embodied learning for anomaly active target tracking.

The primary challenge in active object tracking (AOT) lies in maintaining robust and accurate tracking performance in the complex physical scenarios. Existing end-to-end frameworks based on deep learning and reinforcement learning often struggle with high computational costs, data dependency, and limited generalization, hindering their performance in practical applications. Although embodied intelligence (EI) is promising to enable agents to learn from physical interactions, it cannot tackle severe anomalies happened in the complex scenarios. In order to address this issue, here we propose a n

Method for simultaneous tracking of thousands of unlabeled cells within a transparent 3D matrix.

Three-dimensional tracking of cells is one of the most powerful methods to investigate multicellular phenomena, such as ontogenesis, tumor formation or wound healing. However, 3D tracking in a biological environment usually requires fluorescent labeling of the cells and elaborate equipment, such as automated light sheet or confocal microscopy. Here we present a simple method for 3D tracking large numbers of unlabeled cells in a collagen matrix. Using a small lensless imaging setup, consisting of an LED and a photo sensor only, we were able to simultaneously track ~3000 human neutrophil granulo

The Myokinetic Control Interface: How Many Magnets Can be Implanted in an Amputated Forearm? Evidence From a Simulated Environment.

We recently introduced the concept of a new human-machine interface (the myokinetic control interface) to control hand prostheses. The interface tracks muscle contractions via permanent magnets implanted in the muscles and magnetic field sensors hosted in the prosthetic socket. Previously we showed the feasibility of localizing several magnets in non-realistic workspaces. Here, aided by a 3D CAD model of the forearm, we computed the localization accuracy simulated for three different below-elbow amputation levels, following general guidelines identified in early work. To this aim we first iden

Normal aging delays and compromises early multifocal visual attention during object tracking.

Declines in selective attention are one of the sources contributing to age-related impairments in a broad range of cognitive functions. Most previous research on mechanisms underlying older adults' selection deficits has studied the deployment of visual attention to static objects and features. Here we investigate neural correlates of age-related differences in spatial attention to multiple objects as they move. We used a multiple object tracking task, in which younger and older adults were asked to keep track of moving target objects that moved randomly in the visual field among irrelevant di

Using fMRI to distinguish components of the multiple object tracking task.

Multiple object tracking (MOT) has proven to be a powerful technique for studying sustained selective attention. However, surprisingly little is known about its underlying neural mechanisms. Previous fMRI investigations have identified several brain areas thought to be involved in MOT, but there were disagreements between the studies, none distinguished between the act of tracking targets and the act of attending targets, and none attempted to determine which of these brain areas interact with each other. Here we address these three issues. First, using more observers and a random effects anal

Flexible artificial compound eye cameras for ultrawide continuous tracking in mixed reality.

In nature, fruit flies Drosophila have evolved a simple but superb vision system characterised by a three-level synergy: natural compound eyes for panoramic perception, head muscles for continuous tracking in dim conditions, and neural circuits for dynamic scenes. This vision system serves as an ideal model for biomimicry, yet achieving true replication remains challenging, despite significant progress in artificial compound eyes recently. In this study, we present a flexible artificial compound eye camera that adopts such a three-level synergy. An artificial compound eye is constructed by pla

Comparative effectiveness of 12-week open- and closed-skill exercises on executive function in children with ADHD and developmental dyslexia: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and comorbid developmental dyslexia (ADHD + DD) demonstrate both core symptoms of ADHD and pronounced reading difficulties, which further compromise executive function (EF). This study compared the effects of open-versus closed-skill exercises (OSE vs. CSE) on EF in children with ADHD + DD. METHODS: Thirty children (6.9-8.5 years) with ADHD + DD were randomly assigned to OSE (n = 15) or CSE (n = 15) training, with 15 typically developing (TD) children receiving CSE. All completed 12-week, thrice-weekly, moderate-to-high intens

Comparison of Decision-Related Signals in Sensory and Motor Preparatory Responses of Neurons in Area LIP.

Neurons in the lateral intraparietal (LIP) area of Macaques exhibit both sensory and oculomotor preparatory responses. During perceptual decision making, the preparatory responses have been shown to track the state of the evolving evidence leading to the decision. The sensory responses are known to reflect categorical properties of visual stimuli, but it is not known whether these responses also track evolving evidence. We recorded neural responses from lateral intraparietal area of 2 female rhesus monkeys during a direction discrimination task. We compared sensory and oculomotor-preparatory r

Mechanical transmission of Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts by flies.

Long term field studies and laboratory experiments demonstrated that synanthropic filth flies can mechanically transmit infectious oocysts of Cryptosporidium parvum, an anthropozoonotic protozoan parasite which significantly contributes to the mortality of immunocompromised or immunosuppressed people. C. parvum oocysts are acquired from unhygienic sources, and can pass trough fly gastrointestinal track without alteration of their infectivity and can be subsequently deposited on visited surfaces. Transmission of the oocysts by adult flies occurs via: (1) mechanical dislodgement from the exoskel

Tracking Knowledge Evolution Based on the Terminology Dynamics in 4P-Medicine.

The accelerating evolution of scientific terms connected with 4P-medicine terminology and a need to track this process has led to the development of new methods of analysis and visualization of unstructured information. We built a collection of terms especially extracted from the PubMed database. Statistical analysis showed the temporal dynamics of the formation of derivatives and significant collocations of medical terms. We proposed special linguistic constructs such as megatokens for combining cross-lingual terms into a common semantic field. To build a cyberspace of terms, we used modern v

Bacteria tracking and life cycle state classification using graph neural networks and pretrained vision transformers.

For understanding dynamic biological processes such as the life cycle progression of bacteria at the single-cell level, automatic methods for tracking and state classification are needed. In this work, we propose a unified framework based on Graph Neural Networks for simultaneous bacteria tracking, division detection, and life cycle state classification. In previous work, these tasks were treated separately. With our method, trajectories are represented by a graph, where nodes represent bacteria at different time points of a live-cell microscopy video, and edges represent their interactions ov

A novel multidimensional uncalibration method applied to six-axis manipulators.

This study proposes a multidimensional uncalibrated technique for tracking and grasping dynamic targets by a robotic arm in the eye-in-hand mode. This method avoids complex and cumbersome calibration processes, enabling machine vision tasks to be adaptively applied in a variety of complex environments, which solved the problem of traditional calibration methods being unstable in complex environments. The specific method used in this study is first, in the eye-in-hand mode, the robotic arm moves along the x, y, and z axes in sequence, and images are taken before and after each movement. Thereaf

Speckled Tracking of Pleura-A Novel Tool for Lung Ultrasound; Distinguishing COVID-19 from Acute Heart Failure.

For the acutely dyspneic patient, discerning bedside between acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) and COVID-19 is crucial. A lung ultrasound (LUS) is sensitive for detecting these conditions, but not in distinguishing between them; both have bilateral B-lines. The Blue protocol uses pleural sliding to differentiate decreased pneumonia; however, this is not the case in ADHF. Nonetheless, this pleural sliding has never been quantified. Speckled tracking is a technology utilized in the echocardiography field that quantifies the motion of tissues by examining the movement of ultrasound speckle
