We present a rare case of a tuberculous retropharyngeal abscess (RPA) associated with spinal tuberculosis (TB) (Pott's disease). A patient presented with RPA and collapse of the second cervical vertebra. Fine needle aspiration was performed through the pharynx, not only for diagnosis but also for reduction of the abscess. Tuberculous RPA was diagnosed by microbiological tests of the aspirated fluid from the abscess, which was likely to be extended from Pott's disease. Anti-TB chemotherapy after the aspiration proved effective, resulting in the resolution of the abscess. Early diagnosis and tre

BACKGROUND: Spinal tuberculosis (STB), also known as Pott's disease or tuberculous spondylitis, remains a substantial clinical burden in some remote and resource-limited regions, where X-ray imaging is often the primary modality available for initial assessment. However, early- and mid-stage STB frequently presents with subtle, equivocal, or atypical structural changes on X-ray images, which may lead to delayed recognition and referral in primary-care settings. Investigating suspicious-region localization in cases with clinical suspicion of STB but equivocal X-ray findings may provide supporti

» Abscesses caused by spinal tuberculosis typically occur in the anterior and lateral regions of the vertebral bodies, often extending to the paraspinal muscles as cold abscesses. Although intraspinal abscesses due to spinal tuberculosis are very common, cases with longitudinally extensive abscesses in the ventral epidural space of the spinal cord are not well-documented. The disease is characterized by insidious onset, rapid progression, and a high risk of irreversible neurological damage, highlighting the necessity for early diagnosis and prompt treatment. » This review presents 2 rare cases

OBJECTIVE: Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is well-established for evaluation of spinal tuberculosis (TB), the importance of computed tomography (CT) should not be overlooked. The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of spinal TB and the relationship between spinal TB and the bone lesion pattern seen on three-dimensional CT images.
METHODS: One hundred and sixty-one subjects were divided into a TB-positive group and a TB-negative group based on laboratory (X-pert mycobacterium tuberculosis/ rifampin) results and then subdivided further according to whether the

INTRODUCTION: Spinal tuberculosis is often associated with poor outcomes; host-directed inflammation involving the spine contributes to this disability.
METHODS: A retrospective review of patients with complicated spinal tuberculosis having received tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) antagonists at a referral hospital in South Africa. A literature review was performed to identify all published cases of complicated spinal tuberculosis that received a TNF-α antagonist as part of their treatment.
RESULTS: We describe 23 cases, of which 19 were previously reported in the literature. All patient

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical outcomes of 4 different procedures for the treatment of adjacent multisegmental spinal tuberculosis (AMSST) and to investigate the selection strategy of the optimal procedure with respect to focal characteristics.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Because of the lack of support of the anterior columns of multiple segments, AMSST is thought to confer high risks for the development of kyphosis and paraplegia. However, there are few reports regarding the clinical outcomes of the surgical treatment for AMSST have been investigated.

Tuberculosis (TB) of the spine (Pott's disease) is both the most common and most dangerous form of TB infection. Delay in establishing diagnosis and management cause spinal cord compression and spinal deformity. This study investigated the data on all cases of Pott's disease reported in Turkey from 1985 to 1996. A total of 694 cases were included. Out of the patients evaluated, 19% were reported in the first half of the period (1985-1990) and 81% in the second half (1991-1996). Tuberculosis affecting the spine was commonly localized in the thoracic region and involved the vertebral body. The p

Spinal tuberculosis is due to globalization no longer a disease limited to developing nations. It remains in Germany a rarity and still a difficult diagnosis. Here we analyzed patients with spinal tuberculosis treated at our neurosurgical department. According to the infected anatomic segment, patients were assigned in one of three groups. Surgery was performed when neurological deficit due to mechanical compression, deformity, instability, severe pain, necrotic bone or failure to respond to anti-tuberculous treatment were observed. We identified 34 patients with spinal tuberculosis who underw
