PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Regional anesthesia is controversial in patients with pre-existing neurologic disease. This study reviews the published evidence regarding the utilization and outcomes of regional anesthetics in this population.
RECENT FINDINGS: Although publications are sparse, neuraxial and peripheral regional techniques have been successfully described in patients with spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, Guillain-Barre disease, neurofibromatosis, diseases of the neuromuscular junction, and Charcot-Marie Tooth disease without neurologic complications. Ultrasound guidance may aid in re

UNLABELLED: The simple renal cysts are the most frequent lesions of kidney in adults. Approximately 30% of subjects older than 70 years presents a simple renal cysts. It is well accepted that a simple renal cyst without symptoms does not require any treatment.
OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the efficacy of the echoguided treatment of simple renal cysts with a single sclerotherapy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Since 1995 to March 2010 in our clinic 329 patients underwent percutaneous drainages of simple renal cysts. In 56 cases (17% of patients) it was a simple aspiration, in 69 cases (21%) a drainage was plac

BACKGROUND: Little data about the efficacy and limitations of ultrasound-guided mechanical intraductal stone fragmentation and removal of sialoliths (Sonoguide Forceps) exist.
METHODS: This was a chart review of patients treated within the last 4 years at 2 tertiary care centers.
RESULTS: Sonoguide Forceps were used as a second-line treatment in 22 patients with sialolithiasis. Ten patients were free of stones and symptoms afterwards (7 of 17 submandibular, 2 of 4 parotid, 1 of 1 sublingual). Six patients were primarily treated for parotid sialolithiasis, 4 with successful stone retrieval. T

Intracardiac echocardiography is a new technique based on the use of ultrasonic diagnostic catheter, which can be introduced through the femoral vein up of the right atrium. Intracardiac echocardiography provides bidimensional views, coupled to colour and pulsed Doppler. This review summarizes multiple applications of intracardiac echocardiography in the field of interventional cardiology, particularly during percutaneous closure of patent foramen ovale or atrial septal defect. A major advantage of intracardiac echocardiography is the possibility of avoiding general anaesthesia as well as prov

This study establishes a novel method for draining male rectovesical pouch abscesses using ultrasound guidance with a biplane endocavitary probe via a transperineal approach. Traditional transabdominal puncture routes carry risks of injuring vital structures. In a consecutive retrospective analysis of 15 patients, this technique achieved a 100% success rate with single-pass efficiency and no major complications. Crucially, postoperative indicators showed significant reductions in body temperature (mean Δ = - 1.8 °C, P < 0.001), white blood cell count (mean Δ = - 9.2 × 10⁹/L, P < 0.001), and gr

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound identification of genicular nerves to perform their blockade can be challenging due to high anatomical variability. Initial identification of the easier to visualize genicular artery could allow for further identification of the genicular nerve, permitting precise ultrasound-guided nerve blockades.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three subsequent patients with the end-stage medial knee osteoarthritis (OA) with history of non-successful intraarticular treatment were included. The procedure assumed an ultrasound-guided blockade of the superior and inferior medial genicular nerves

INTRODUCTION: High-resolution ultrasound can be utilized for the detection, localization, and characterization of both radiopaque and non-radiopaque soft tissue foreign bodies. However, ultrasonography as an intraoperative or percutaneous guidance method has not been systematically described in military-related wound management. The purpose of this study is to determine if ultrasound-guided foreign body removal (USFBR) taught in simulation improves radiologist technique and Foreign Body (FB) removal outcomes. Once the technique is mastered, the implementation of FB removals in Department of De

The infrapatellar fat pad (IFP), a key intra-articular knee structure, plays a crucial role in biomechanical cushioning and metabolic regulation, with fibrosis and inflammation contributing to osteoarthritis-related pain and dysfunction. This review outlines the anatomy and clinical value of IFP ultrasonography in static and dynamic assessment, as well as guided interventions. Shear wave elastography (SWE), Doppler imaging, and dynamic ultrasound effectively quantify tissue stiffness, vascular signals, and flexion-extension morphology. Due to the limited penetration capability of ultrasound im

BACKGROUND: Nonsurgical cosmetic procedures, particularly the use of hyaluronic acid (HA)-based soft tissue fillers, are becoming increasingly popular. This trend has catalyzed the development of a plethora of HA-based products differing in product characteristics, thereby catering to an ever-widening spectrum of aesthetic applications. However, complications rise concomitant with the increasing number of procedures. Among the strategies to manage such adverse events is the enzymatic breakdown with hyaluronidase.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the response of different HA-based soft tissue filler mate

Ultrasound-guided local anaesthesia is commonly used in veterinary orthopaedics for horses. This study aimed to assess an in vivo ultrasound technique for the medial branch of the dorsal branch of the cervical spinal nerves (MB-DBCSNs) in horses and compare the performance of clinicians with different experience levels. Ten healthy, skeletally mature horses were examined using radiographic and ultrasound (US) techniques in the cervical area (C3-C7). Four operators with varying experience conducted US examinations using a 10 MHz linear and 6 MHz curvilinear transducer over ten training sessions

INTRODUCTION: Congenital hydrocephalus often results in irreversible and severe damage to the brain despite postnatal interventions. The potential for prenatal intervention to mitigate these deleterious effects underscores the importance of a suitable animal model. We aimed assess the results of an ultrasound-guided transuterine approach to replicate the BioGlue injection fetal hydrocephalus model.
METHODS: Pregnant ewes were anesthetized at 95 days of gestation and BioGlue was injected into the fetal cisterna magna under ultrasound guidance through the uterus. Ventriculomegaly was assessed b

BACKGROUND: Whether ultrasound-guided stellate ganglion block (SGB) is a valuable therapeutic option for the treatment of patients with chronic migraine (CM) is worth exploring. If SGB is proven to be effective for CM, the identification of potential predictors for the effectiveness of SGB warrants further investigation. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness and safety of SGB in patients with CM and to explore the predictive factors for its treatment effectiveness.
METHODS: This is a retrospective observational study. We retrospectively analyzed the effects of SGB for the treatmen
