Three elderly patients presented at one hospital in a 2-week period with acute urinary retention precipitated by the hyperosmolar non-ketotic diabetic state. In each case routine urine testing was reported as showing 1 per cent glycosuria. The first two patients were admitted at night and blood glucose estimations were not done. We report two uncommon cases of acute urinary retention in Chinese patients caused by reactivation of sacral herpes zoster and requiring bladder drainage. Gravid uterine incarceration (GUI) is a condition that is well discussed in literature; however, there are few acute diagnoses in the emergency department (ED). We present a case series where three multiparous females presented to the ED with non-specific urinary symptoms. Caudal regression syndrome is a rare and sporadic congenital developmental defect of the lower spinal segments and the neural tube. Movement disorders and sensory neurological deficits of the lower extremities in conjunction with impaired bladder and bowel control are the major symptoms. Abnormal visual aspects of the sacral region in combination with maternal gestational diabetes are further diagnostic indications. This article reports the unusual case of a toddler presenting with acute urinary retention as the initial symptom of caudal regression syndrome.

We report two cases of acute urinary retention secondary to benign inflammatory nervous disease. Case 1 is in a 48-year-old male who was diagnosed with aseptic meningitis. Case 2 is in a 67-year-old male who was diagnosed with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. These two cases differred in specific mechanism of the disease, but both shared symptoms of temporal voiding disturbance due to sacral radiculopathy (Elsberg syndrome). This condition is extremely rare, but should be kept in mind because delayed treatment can lead to permanent impairment.
