Bone mineral density loss in patients with urolithiasis: a follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent calcium urolithiasis is often associated with disorders of calcium metabolism. The purpose of this investigation was to assess bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD) over a period of 1 year in patients with urolithiasis and to determine the factors that could have influenced the changes in bone density during that period. METHODS: The patient group comprised 34 men aged 41.2 plus minus 7.9 years with recurrent urolithiasis. A wide spectrum of biochemical measurements was performed. Bone mineral density (g/cm(2)), bone mineral content (BMC), and bone ar

Symptomatology and development of urolithiasis in children with frequency-dysuria syndrome associated with hypercalciuria.

To investigate the long-term outcome of the frequency-dysuria syndrome (FDS) with hypercalciuria (HCU), 19 children (15 girls and 4 boys; age range 15 months to 10 years) who presented with FDS alone (N=9) or with other associated clinical features (N=10; 6 with gross hematuria, 3 with microscopic hematuria and 1 with abdominal pain) were followed-up over 720 patient-months. Calcium loading test indicated absorptive HCU in 12 patients, renal HCU in 2, and in 5 the test was inconclusive. All patients were treated with a standard protocol after diagnosis. During follow-up, FDS recurred in 4 chil

Prevalence of urolithiasis in Kaizuka City, Japan--an epidemiologic study of urinary stones.

BACKGROUND: According to the results of nationwide surveys, the prevalence of urolithiasis has been steadily increasing in Japan. However, these surveys relied on hospital statistics, and there has been no survey of the prevalence of urolithiasis in Japan utilizing postal questionnaires. We surveyed the prevalence of urolithiasis among the inhabitants of Kaizuka City. METHODS: A total of 3,000 inhabitants ranging from 20 to 59 years old were randomly selected from the census register in numbers consistent with the population distribution of each district and sex by municipal computerized syst

Urolithiasis in small ruminants. II. Cysto-urethrography as a new aid in diagnosis.

A technique for catheterizing male small ruminants is described. The barrier formed by the presence of the urethral diverticulum is avoided by the use of a pre-curved catheter. The technique enables application of contrast studies of bladder and urethra in animals suspected of urolithiasis. Differentiation between cystitis and obstructive urolithiasis is possible and the indications for urethrostomy can be reduced.

Open tip-enhanced V-shaped nanocavity arrays for urolithiasis biomarker osteopontin detection.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a highly sensitive and selective analytical technique that has shown great potential in bioanalysis. However, due to the relatively large size of protein molecules, steric hindrance can impede target molecules from entering hotspot regions, leaving most analytes at SERS-inactive regions and thereby reducing detection sensitivity and signal reproducibility. In this work, we designed an open, tip-enhanced V-shaped nanocavity array formed by an ordered bilayer of gold nanotetrahedra to enable SERS detection of osteopontin, a biomarker for urinary calc

Changes in intrarenal vascular indices after semi-rigid ureteroscopy in pediatric urolithiasis.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated preoperative and postoperative intrarenal vascular parameters, including resistive index (RI), pulsatility index (PI), peak systolic velocity (PSV), and end-diastolic velocity (EDV). Furthermore, we assessed postoperative changes in these indices (ΔRI, ΔPI, ΔPSV, ΔEDV) after semi-rigid ureteroscopy (URS), compared them with contralateral normal kidneys, and identified potential factors influencing variations in renal vascular resistance. METHODS: A prospective analysis was conducted on 23 pediatric patients who underwent semi-rigid URS. Preoperative grayscale ultrasono

Gastrointestinal resection is associated with urolithiasis severity among inflammatory bowel disease patients.

BACKGROUND: A well-established correlation exists between Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and urolithiasis. However, the influence of surgical history on the severity of urolithiasis in IBD patients remains underexplored. This study aims to investigate the association between gastrointestinal (GI) bowel resection and urolithiasis severity in patients with IBD. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed 42 patients diagnosed with both IBD and urolithiasis between 2016 and 2024. Patients were categorized based on their history of bowel resection. Primary outcomes included maximal stone

Nationwide cohort analysis of pediatric urolithiasis: long-term metabolic, renal, and cardiovascular outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric urolithiasis is increasingly recognized not merely as a localized urinary disorder but as part of a systemic metabolic-inflammatory process that may predispose to chronic kidney and cardiovascular disease. However, population-based data in Asian pediatric populations with urolithiasis remain limited. This nationwide study investigated the epidemiologic trends, metabolic risk factors, and systemic outcomes associated with pediatric urolithiasis in Taiwan. METHODS: Using the National Health Insurance Research Database, children newly diagnosed with urolithiasis between Jan

Brown adipose tissue detection using positron emission tomography could help reduce urolithiasis risk.

Urolithiasis is associated with metabolic syndrome, and reactivation of brown adipose tissue (BAT) may improve metabolic syndrome. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the association of BAT, as detected using positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT), with urolithiasis in humans. This single center retrospective cohort study involved patients who underwent PET-CT for cancer screening as part of a medical checkup between January 2006 and December 2020. We obtained data on participant demographics, presence of urolithiasis, and metabolic factors (such as obesity, hypertension, di

Causality between ankylosing spondylitis and urolithiasis in European Populations: A Mendelian randomization analysis.

BACKGROUND: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an inflammatory condition affecting the spine. Observational studies have suggested a heightened risk of urolithiasis in AS patients. However, due to the inherent limitations of observational research, the causal relationship between the two remains to be determined. OBJECTIVE: Utilizing the Mendelian randomization analysis approach, this study sought to explore the causal link between AS and urolithiasis. METHODS: Data from genome-wide association studies were employed for analysis. Mendelian randomization analyses were conducted using the IVW, MR-

ACR Appropriateness Criteria® Acute Onset Flank Pain-Suspicion of Stone Disease (Urolithiasis).

Noncontrast CT (NCCT) is the imaging study of choice for initial evaluation of patients with acute onset of flank pain and suspicion of stone disease without known prior stone disease. NCCT can reliably characterize the location and size of an offending ureteral calculus, identify complications, and diagnose alternative etiologies of abdominal pain. Although less sensitive in the detection of stones, ultrasound may have a role in evaluating for signs of obstruction. Radiography potentially has a role, although has been shown to be less sensitive than NCCT. For patients with known disease and r
