Combined posterior contusion and penetrating injury in the pig eye. II. Histological features.

The main histological features observed after an experimental posterior contusion injury in the pig eye were haemorrhage from the choroidal vessels into the subretinal space and into the vitreous, uveal vessel dilatation, and an inflammatory reaction. These changes resolved during the first 2 weeks, and the subretinal haemorrhage was replaced by a fibrocellular membrane. The addition of a posterior penetrating injury resulted in fibrocellular proliferation at the wound site 6 days after injury and in formation of vitreoretinal traction membranes and subsequent traction retinal detachment. Post…

A histopathologic study of the Choyce VIII intraocular lens.

We performed a postmortem ocular examination on a 52-year-old man who had had Choyce VIII intraocular lenses implanted in both eyes. Visual acuity with both lenses was 6/6 (20/20). There were no clinical complications before the patient's death. Marked stretching of the chamber angle occurred at all points of fixation, with ultimate loop fixation into the substance of the ciliary body and, in some instances, erosion close to the greater arterial circle of the ciliary body. Where iris tucking had occurred, the iris tucked over the foot of the lens was extremely thin with the foot and the tucked

Traumatic rupture of healed cataract wounds.

Three patients suffered blunt trauma that caused rupture of the site of cataract incision three to 12 years after surgery. Epithelial cells were noted in the old cataract would of a 79-year-old white man. The second patient, a 25-year-old black women, had bilateral ocular toxoplasmosis and loss of vitreous humor at the time of lens extraction. The third patient, a 63-year-old white woman, had open-angle glaucoma treated previously with filtering procedures and cyclocryotherapy. The ultimate outcome was poor in each case.

Bilateral Uveitis in a Horse With a Renal Carcinoma.

Equine uveitis is a common eye disease that affect horses from different breeds, ages, and genders. Uveitis has been described as inflammation of the uvea secondary immunomediated processes or eye trauma. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common tumor that can affect the equine kidneys. The present case describe a horse that was referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of Extremadura with bilateral uveitis. The horse was treated for the primary complain but the horse collapse and die during hospitalization. At necropsy, a tumoral mass in kidney with extensive in othe…

Ophthalmological findings in Gaucher disease.

Gaucher disease is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder caused by mutations in the gene GBA1, which encodes the lysosomal prote … al findings. These rare and variable ocular manifestations, involving the vitreous, retina, cornea, uvea, conjunctiva and eye movements, can pose a diagnostic challenge for clinicians, especially those not familiar with the disorder. In this review, we explore the different ophthalmologic findings reported in patients with Gaucher disease, aiming to fa …

Inner ear enhancement on gadolinium-enhanced 3D FLAIR images in a patient with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease.

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease is an autoimmune disorder that occurs in the melanocytes present in the uvea, leptomeninges, skin and inner ear. Clinically, this disease is characterized by bilateral uveitis and retinal detachment and is associated with meningismus and hearing loss. Gadolinium (Gd)-enhanced MRI may aid in demonstrating bilateral choroidal thickening and central nervous system involvement. We present a case of VKH where Gd-enhanced three-dimensional (3D) fluid attenuation inversion recovery (FLAIR) imaging showed abnormal bilateral enhancement in the inner ears. A 36-year-ol…

Posterior uveitis: an under-recognized adverse effect of pamidronate: 2 case reports.

Ocular adverse effects of pamidronic acid are rare but well documented. Pamidronate, an inhibitor of bone resorption used primarily in the management of tumor-induced hypercalcemia and Paget's disease, is reported to cause conjunctivitis, anterior uveitis, and infrequently episcleritis and scleritis. It is hypothesized that an allergic or immunologic phenomenon caused by drug-indued immune complex formation is at fault. The reason why the uvea is a target organ is unclear. The acute inflammatory response seems unrelated to the dose of the drug, the way of administration, or the activity of Pag…

Complete ring melanoma of the choroid.

BACKGROUND: Ring melanoma of the uvea is a term generally applied to elongated, circumferentially oriented malignant melanomas of the iris and ciliary body; a complete ring melanoma involving almost exclusively the choroid is extremely uncommon. METHODS: The authors present a case report and clinicopathologic correlation of complete ring melanoma of choroid managed by enucleation. RESULTS: A 74-year-old woman was found to have a diffuse, melanotic thickening of the midzonal to peripheral choroid circumferentially for 360 degrees and an associated subtotal serous retinal detachment with shift…

BAP1 loss and PRAME expression converge to remodel the tumor-immune ecosystem during uveal melanoma progression.

Uveal melanoma (UM) is characterized by a small number of recurrent genetic alterations that determine metastatic propensity. BAP1 loss and PRAME expression define the dominant prognostic axes in UM, yet how they promote malignant progression remains unclear. We profiled 190,535 cells from normal uvea, uveal nevus, primary and metastatic UM using single-cell transcriptomics, T cell receptor sequencing, spatial transcriptomics and isogenic perturbation models. Normal melanocytes, nevus cells and UM cells formed a transcriptional continuum marked by loss of differentiation and emergence of neura…

Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis in Adults with Intraocular Involvement: Clinicopathologic Features of 3 Cases.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is an infrequent inflammatory multisystemic syndrome. Only rare cases with ophthal … lmic pathology demonstrated a bilateral histiocytic infiltrate with scant lymphocytes affecting the uvea. Focal extension to the retina, optic nerve, and trabecular meshwork were also identified, as well as hemophagocytosis in 1 case. Macrophages showed strong immunoreactivity for CD163 antibody and lacked BRAF p.V600E mutant protein. CONCLUSION: HLH …

Glaucoma associated with uveal cysts and goniodysgenesis in American Bulldogs: a case series.

We present a series of three American Bulldogs with clinical signs of glaucoma and intraocular inflammation accompanied by bilateral uveal cysts and abnormal gonioscopic findings. All dogs proved refractory to medical management and were enucleated. Histopathologic findings were similar in all three and included significant preiridal fibrovascular membranes and mononuclear inflammatory infiltrates in the anterior uvea. On microscopic evaluation, cysts appeared to arise primarily from the ciliary body and iridociliary sulcus, with smaller cysts also budding from the posterior iris. Pigment disp…

Seroprevalence of antibodies to HTLV-I in patients with ocular disorders.

Human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-I) has been shown to spread worldwide and to be responsible for distinct systemic diseases, namely a … ere acute or subacute, transient and sometimes recurrent, and granulomatous changes in the anterior uvea. Patients with isolated cotton-wool spot of the retina, non-familial retinitis pigmentosa, or keratoconjunctivitis sicca did not show any significantly high prevalence of HTLV-I infection.

Multimodal imaging patterns of posterior syphilitic uveitis: a review of the literature, laboratory evaluation and treatment.

PURPOSE: To review the multimodal imaging patterns of posterior syphilitic uveitis. METHODS: A systematic review. RESULTS: The percentage of syphilis has started to increase again: The World Health Organization has reported 12 million new cases of syphilis each year. In addition, syphilis was responsible for 0.3% of deaths globally in 2002. Eye manifestations happen prevalently in secondary and tertiary stages of syphilis, even though ocular involvement can occur in all stages. Syphilis has the nickname: "the great imitator" since it has no unique clinical presentation, even though posterior

External ophthalmomyiasis manifesting with keratouveitis.

PURPOSE: To report a case of external ophthalmomyiasis manifesting with keratouveitis. CASE REPORT: A 77-year-old man, presented with keratouveitis secondary to external ophthalmomyiasis. Slit-lamp examination of the affected eye disclosed subepithelial linear opacities, stromal keratitis, and anterior uveitis. There were also some moving maggots identified as Oestrus ovis larvae. Following removal of the maggots and instillation of tobramycin, the symptoms completely resolved within 2 days and visual acuity improved. CONCLUSIONS: Although external ophthalmomyiasis usually manifests with ocu
