PURPOSE: To report the short-term outcome of intravitreal triamcinolone acetate (TA) in the treatment of uveitic cystoid macular edema (CME).
DESIGN: Retrospective noncomparative (nonrandomized, uncontrolled) interventional case series.
PARTICIPANTS: Sixty-five eyes of 54 patients with uveitis-related CME inadequately responsive to treatment combinations of oral corticosteroid, periocular orbital floor corticosteroid injections, and second-line immunosuppressive agents.
INTERVENTION: Intravitreal injection of 4 mg/0.1 ml of TA.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Visual acuity (VA), intraocular pressur…

OBJECTIVE: To address the problems present in the treatment of uveitis.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was made on 154 patients (268 eyes) with different entities of uveitis, coming from all over China and referring to Zhongshan ophthalmic center from April to October of 2000. The data of these patients, especially with respect to the usage of corticosteroids and antibiotics in the referred hospitals, were analyzed.
RESULTS: Corticosteroids drops, subconjunctival or retrobulbar injection and systemic corticosteroids were respectively used in 90.3% and 84.0% of these eyes, and 92.9% of the…

PURPOSE: To analyze the main indications and the most common ultrasonographic features observed in uveitis due to toxoplasmosis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We carried out a retrospective, observational and descriptive study performed in 97 exams corresponding to 89 patients with uveitis during 7 consecutive years (1994-2000) using B-ultrasonography evaluation.
RESULTS: The main ultrasonographic indication in toxoplasmosis was vitreous opacity. We observed that the most frequent findings were: a) intravitreous punctiform echoes, b) thickening of posterior hyaloid, c) partial or total posterior vit…

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of the spondyloarthritides in patients with uveitis and to establish criteria for certain subtypes of this group of diseases.
METHODS: In a university-based prospective study, we examined 433 patients with different types of uveitis for signs of spondyloarthritides as defined by the classification criteria of the European Spondylarthropathy Study Group (ESSG).
RESULTS: Forty-four of the 433 uveitis patients (36 with acute anterior uveitis and 8 with other types of uveitis) had spondyloarthritis according to the ESSG classification criteria. Nineteen of …

The world's medical literature on tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis (TINU) syndrome was reviewed, and data on 133 patients with TINU syndrome were identified. The median age of onset was 15 years (range 9-74 years) with a 3:1 female-to-male predominance. Common laboratory abnormalities included elevated Westergren erythrocyte sedimentation rates and elevated urinary beta-2-microglobulin levels. Ocular symptoms preceded systemic symptoms in 21% of cases, and followed systemic symptoms by up to 14 months in 65% of cases. Uveitis involved only the anterior segment in 80% of cases. Uveitis …

PURPOSE: To report the technique and postoperative results of cataract surgery in children with uveitis.
METHOD: Between 1988 and 1998, nine children (age range: 2.5-11 years) who developed secondary uveitic cataract and underwent cataract extraction were studied retrospectively. Seven children had juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and two had chronic anterior uveitis of unknown etiology. The surgical technique was lensectomy and wide anterior vitrectomy with limbal approach, lysis of anterior synechiae and in some cases, peripheral iridectomy. Postoperative aphakia was corrected with soft contac…

BACKGROUND: Ganciclovir, administered systemically or intraocularly, is effective in controlling cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in immunocompromised patients. The efficacy of therapy with this antiviral substance was investigated in an immunocompetent patient with CMV uveitis causing secondary glaucoma.
METHODS: To identify the presence of an intraocular viral infection, anterior chamber taps to detect the intraocular synthesis of IgG antibodies and PCR testing were carried out. Clinically, the degree of intraocular inflammation and the intraocular pressure (IOP) values were monitored. Durin…

We carried out a retrospective analysis of 581 patients with uveitis seen over an 11-year period, to determine the prevalence of HIV infection in these patients and to look for associated diseases and the possible causes of uveitis in HIV-infected patients. All patients underwent routine eye examination and most also underwent a general examination and complementary tests. The prevalence of HIV infection was 14.3% (89 patients). Anterior uveitis (62%) was the most frequent, followed by posterior uveitis (22%), panuveitis (12%) and intermediate uveitis (4%). Associated conditions or causes were…

PURPOSE: To evaluate the prevalence of secondary glaucoma (SG), clinical forms of uveitis more frequently associated with glaucoma, and describe the treatment and complications encountered in a cohort of patients with glaucoma and uveitis during a 10-year period.
METHODS: The hospital records of patients with uveitis referred to the Immunology Service of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary for a decade were reviewed for cases of SG.
RESULTS: One hundred and twenty of the 1,254 patients (9.6%) with uveitis developed SG. SG was more frequent in anterior uveitis (67%) but was also associate…

BACKGROUND: Although uveitis is relatively uncommon in children, its diagnosis and management present a distinct clinical challenge for the physician. An improved knowledge of disease patterns and associated morbidity will help in the care of children with uveitis.
METHODS: The authors reviewed the records of 130 patients with onset of uveitis at 16 years of age or younger. The etiology of uveitis, complications encountered, treatment administered, and visual results were analyzed.
RESULTS: Uveitis associated with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) was the largest group (41.5%) followed by …

An animal model of HTLV-I associated uveitis was created. One rabbit developed bilateral uveitis 3,5 years after being injected with blood from an HTLV-I-infected rabbit. The proviral DNA of HTLV-I was detected by polymerase chain reaction and dot-blot hybridization in the aqueous humor of the anterior chamber and the vitreous body. Histopathological examination revealed marked corneal opacity with neovascularization and infiltration of inflammatory cells, mainly plasma cells, into the iris, ciliary body, and choroid. Complicated cataracts were also seen. The retinas were destroyed and replace…

BACKGROUND: Uveitis is commonly seen in optometric practice, and anterior uveitis accounts for more than 75% of all uveitis. Uveitis may be the initial manifestation of an associated systemic disease process; and, with proper testing and diagnosis, the patient's ocular and systemic condition may be more effectively treated.
METHODS: Retrospectively, 194 charts from a referral practice with a general diagnosis of uveitis, retinitis, or chorioretinal scar were reviewed to determine medical history, clinical findings, tests performed, and specific diagnoses obtained.
RESULTS: The majority of ca…

Seventeen children aged 2 to 13, suffering from uveitis of unknown etiology, were screened for chronic infections, toxocariasis included. Antibodies to Toxocara canis were detected in the blood of two children with negative results of tests for toxoplasmosis, tuberculosis, herpetic and cytomegaloviral infections. One of these two suffered from panuveitis, the other from granulomatous chorioretinitis. Both the clinical forms are characteristic of ocular toxocariasis.

Accurate diagnosis of uveitis is of great importance since the treatment for the various uveitis entities may differ considerably. In a large number of cases the clinical picture is sufficient to make an adequate diagnosis. There are cases in which the diagnosis cannot be made on clinical grounds alone and support is needed from laboratory tests. Only a limited number of tests have been proven to be useful as a diagnostic or prognostic aid. These include HLA-B27 typing in patients presenting with anterior uveitis and testing for angiotensin converting enzyme and lysozyme in case of suspected s…
