Cephalometric outcomes of a new orthopaedic appliance for Class III malocclusion treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate dental and skeletal effects of a new orthopaedic appliance for the treatment of Class III malocclusion in growing patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective cephalometric study was performed on a sample of 18 patients with a skeletal Class III malocclusion (4 males; 14 females; mean age 8.8 ± 1.5 years) treated with the Pushing Splints 3 (PS3) protocol. The control group consisted of 18 subjects (5 males; 13 females; mean age 9.1 ± 1.8 years) selected from a database of subjects with untreated Class III malocclusion. The cephalometric analysis was performed at t

Associations between occlusion, jaw relationships, craniofacial dimensions and the occurrence of palatally-displaced canines.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cephalometric and arch measurements might predict the occurrence of a palatally-displaced impacted maxillary canine … ds to accompany molar class II/III but is not associated with upper or lower jaw widths or lengths. Vertical dimensions might be smaller in PDC patients. Some variables were inconclusive and need future assessments.

Prevalence of Candida spp. in Healthy Oral Mucosa Surfaces with Higher Incidence of Chronic Hyperplastic Candidosis.

INTRODUCTION: Predisposing factors in chronic hyperplastic candidosis (CHC) have been poorly recognized. This study aimed at assessing the prevalence of Candida spp. in areas of the oral mucosa showing greater prevalent rate of CHC, such as the retrocomissural area, the lateral borders of the tongue, and the hard-palate mucosa in four groups of individuals presenting predisposing factors as follows: Smoking habits (group I); patients with low salivary flow rate (SFR) (hyposalivation - group II); patients with loss of vertical dimension of occlusion (LVDO -group III); and control subjects (grou…

Management of patients with excessive gingival display for maxillary complete arch fixed implant-supported prostheses.

Maxillary complete arch fixed implant-supported prostheses are a popular treatment option for edentulous patients. Excessive gingival display or gummy smile in edentulous patients is relatively uncommon. However, many partially edentulous patients or completely dentate patients with compromised dentition and excessive gingival display may seek a fixed implant-supported prosthesis. Some of these patients may be candidates for immediate implant placement and insertion of the prosthesis, while others may carry over their preexisting excessive gingival display to the edentulous state for a variabl

Changes in facial morphology after adenotonsillectomy in mouth-breathing children.

BACKGROUND: Morphological and dentofacial alterations have been attributed to impaired respiratory function. OBJECTIVE: To examine the influence of mouth breathing (MB) on children facial morphology before and after adenoidectomy or adenotonsillectomy. METHODS: Thirty-three MB children who restored nasal breathing (NB) after surgery and 22 NB children were evaluated. Both groups were submitted to lateral cephalometry, at time 1 (T1) before and at time 2 (T2) 28 months on average postoperatively. RESULTS: Comparison between the MB and NB groups at T1 showed that mouth breathers had higher in

Cumulative frequency distribution in East Asian facial widths using the facial golden mask.

INTRODUCTION: Many studies have been published on the clinical importance and attractiveness of a face. On the other hand, Asian faces give an impression that is not polished owing to their pronounced cheekbone and mandible. There have already been many studies in progress pertaining to measurements and analyses of Asian facial structure; however, the authors would like to contribute to such research by providing practical analytical data and distributional patterns of the widths of their faces showing how wide their faces are. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The facial golden mask was applied to 1000

Craniofacial morphology in preschool children with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome.

AIM: Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is a common problem in children. It is characterised by a combination of partial airway obstruction associated with hypoxemia and hypoventilation and intermittent obstructive apnoea, which disrupts normal ventilation and sleep. The aim of the study was to evaluate the craniofacial features of preschool children with polysomnographic diagnosis of OSAS, using measurements from standardized lateral cephalograms according to the floating norms cephalometric analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 21 untreated caucasian children (mean age of 4.57 +/-0.6) with

Mandibular asymmetry in cleft lip and palate patients.

The aims of this study were to evaluate condylar, ramal, and condylar plus ramal mandibular vertical asymmetry in a group of cleft lip and palate (CLP) patients and compared with subjects with a 'normal' occlusion. Mandibular asymmetry index (condylar, ramal, and condylar plus ramal) and gonial angle measurements were examined on panoramic radiographs. The study groups comprised 20 unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) patients (10 males and 10 females; mean age 13.03 +/- 3.33 years), 20 bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) patients (10 males and 10 females; mean age 13.73 +/- 3.53 years), a

Vertical control by combining a monoblock appliance in adult class III overclosure treatment.

Monoblock appliances were used in combination with intermaxillary elastics for treatment of adult skeletal Class III patients. The patients showed predisposing upper incisors problems, significant mobility in patient 1 and root resorption in patient 2, which contraindicated direct intrusion of the incisors. Using the monoblock with selective extrusion of the molars, a clockwise rotation was induced to reduce overbite and to achieve a better profile. It was also possible to reduce the excessive force to the upper incisors during and after treatment, which improved incisor mobility to a physiolo

Treatment of occlusal plane canting using miniscrew anchorage.

Two patient therapies introduce the use of miniscrew anchorage in adult patients for the correction of mild to moderate occlusal plane canting without severe facial asymmetries. A miniscrew implanted in the infrazygomatic buttress was used as anchorage for intruding the overerupted maxillary quadrant. As unilateral intrusion of maxillary posterior teeth will develop a posterior unilateral open bite, box elastics were subsequently used to extrude the opposing teeth in the mandibular arch. These treatments show that miniscrew anchorage offers a simple, efficient method of correcting occlusal pla

An analysis of the skeletal relationships in a group of young people with hypodontia.

The objective of this investigation was to examine the dentofacial features of a group of patients with hypodontia, in particular assessing whether cephalometric analysis confirmed the clinical assumption of a reduced lower face height, and to determine the relationship of these facial features with different numbers of missing teeth. It took the form of a cephalometric study, undertaken in a dedicated Dental Hospital clinic for patients with hypodontia. The study group comprised 59 patients seen on the Hypodontia Clinic: 32 females, 27 males, mean age 13.1+/-3.1 years (range 6-23 years). The

Sixty-eight years of experimental occlusal interference studies: what have we learned?

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Understanding is needed regarding the effect that occlusal interferences have on the teeth, periodontium, and especially on jaw function. PURPOSE: This article summarizes research in which experimental occlusal interferences have been placed on the teeth of animals and human volunteers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data from 18 human and 10 animals studies were reviewed. Experimental occlusal interferences were grouped into those that alter intercuspal position and those contacting on lateral jaw movement only. The outcome of these interferences were analyzed according to thei

Subnasal modified Le Fort I for nasolabial aesthetics improvement.

We report our experience with a modified Le Fort I osteotomy developed to avoid nasal tip upturning, alar base widening, and upper lip flattening in anterosuperior repositioning of the maxilla. We compare the aesthetic results obtained with this variation of the surgical technique to those obtained using the more traditional Le Fort I osteotomy combined with the alar cinch suture and the anterior nasal spine reduction procedures on a sample of 20 patients.

Longitudinal study of jaw growth and prosthetic management in a patient with ectodermal dysplasia and anodontia.

A patient with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia and anodontia was studied clinically and cephalometrically from 6 to 18 years of age. This case is exceptional in that the patient was a young girl. Five sets of complete dentures were fitted during this period. Periodic recall examination and adjustment maintained good oral function and aesthetics. Serial cephalometric analysis of craniofacial development revealed that growth of the maxilla was slightly reduced, but there was no detectable effect in the mandible. Three-dimensional analysis of the alveolar ridge form from serial casts showed tha

Relapse following mandibular advancement with dental plus skeletal maxillomandibular fixation.

This study examines the short-term stability of the mandible following mandibular advancement surgery in which skeletal suspension wires were used in addition to dental maxillomandibular fixation. Twenty adults underwent sagittal ramus osteotomies. No concomitant surgical procedures were performed. Maxillomandibular fixation consisted of wiring between the upper and lower orthodontic brackets and circummandibular wires connected to the piriform aperture or anterior nasal spine wires for eight weeks. Cephalograms were analyzed during this period to evaluate skeletal stability. A statistically i

Cleft Lip Repair: Through the Looking Glass.

The goal of cleft lip repair is an anatomic re-creation of the normal lip elements with no vertical discrepancy between the affected and normal sides of the central philtral element. Frequently, the repaired lip appears short in the vertical dimension despite careful preoperative measurements and intraoperative maneuvers. Some may be due to postoperative scar contraction, but some may be due to a failure to consider the internal surface when reconstructing the lip. Much literature has been dedicated to marking and repairing the skin and muscle of the lip; however, scant consideration has been …
