OBJECTIVE: This article presents the case of an adolescent with asymptomatic coronavirus disease 2019 infection who had vestibular neuronitis symptoms.
METHOD AND RESULTS: The new coronavirus disease 2019 demonstrates neurotropic properties, apart from airway symptoms. Early in the pandemic, coronavirus disease 2019 infection had been associated with olfactory disturbances. Accumulative evidence supports that both the infection with coronavirus disease 2019 and the vaccination against the virus may induce a condition of vestibular hypofunction, known as vestibular neuronitis. Coronavirus dise

OBJECTIVE: Structural reorganization following cerebellar infarcts is not yet known. This study aimed to demonstrate structural volumetric changes over time in the cortical vestibular and multisensory areas (i.e., brain plasticity) after acute cerebellar infarcts with vestibular and ocular motor symptoms. Additionally, we evaluated whether structural reorganization in the patients topographically correlates with cerebello-cortical connectivity that can be observed in healthy participants.
METHODS: We obtained high-resolution structural imaging in seven patients with midline cerebellar infarct

BACKGROUND: The broad range of vestibular tests used to diagnose labyrinth diseases allows for a functional assessment of the vestibular system. Among the many tests performed, the caloric test is considered the gold standard by providing an objective measurement of the vestibular function for each labyrinth.
OBJECTIVE: to correlate the different types of dizziness with the caloric test result.
METHODS: a descriptive study was performed based on the previous records of vestibular tests performed on patients with body balance disorders evaluated at Audiology Service between 2000 and 2020. The

Most dementia patients with a mixed dementia (MxD) diagnosis have a mix of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia. Electrovestibulography (EVestG) records vestibuloacoustic afferent activity. We hypothesize EVestG recordings of AD and MxD patients are different. All patients were assessed with the Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) and Hachinski ischemic scale (HIS) (> 4 HIS score < 7 is representative of MxD cerebrovascular symptomology). EVestG recordings were made from 26 AD, 21 MxD and 44 healthy (control) participants. Features were derived from the EVestG recordings of the aver

INTRODUCTION: Concussion is defined as a mild traumatic brain injury that can occur in all sport activities. Cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMPs) are accepted to demonstrate the vestibulocollic reflex. MAIN: To evaluate subclinical cervical abnormalities in the vestibulospinal pathway in subjects with concussion history with and without related symptoms via evoked vestibular potential.
METHODS: Monaurally air conduction cVEMP (500 Hz tone bursts) at intensity of 100 dBnHL and 200 sweeps. All responses were replicated.
RESULTS: One hundred fifty-four participants were initi

OBJECTIVE: To examine the high frequency horizontal vestibular ocular-reflex (hVOR) during acute attacks of vertigo in Menière's disease (MD).
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series and literature review.
SETTING: Tertiary academic medical center.
PATIENTS: Patients with clinical diagnosis of unilateral "definite MD."
INTERVENTION: Review of medical records.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Spontaneous nystagmus and the dynamic hVOR gain change at different stages of an acute episode of MD attack.
RESULTS: We studied 10 vertigo attacks during the unique stages of the episode. During the acme stag

Objective:To explore the clinical effect of vestibular rehabilitation on vestibular neuritis. Method:Fifty patients with vestibular neuritis (VN) were randomly divided into study group (n=26) and control group (n=24). The patient in study group received methylprednisolone treatment and peripheral vestibular rehabilitation therapy, while that in the control group received methylprednisolone only. Spontaneous nystagmus (SN), caloric test (CP), directional preponderance (DP),vestibular muscle evoked potential (VEMP) were comparative for study group and control group at admission, 1 month after tr

Inferior vestibular neuritis is a rare form of acute peripheral vestibular loss that only implies the lesion of the inferior vestibular nerve. The diagnosis is based on the observation of a spontaneous downbeating nystagmus, pathological head impulse test for the posterior semicircular canal and abnormal cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials. Bithermal caloric testing and head impulse test for horizontal and anterior canals are normal, as well as the ocular vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials. The differential diagnosis of inferior vestibular neuritis includes the various central le

Moving and interacting with the environment require a reference for orientation and a scale for calibration in space and time. There is a wide variety of environmental clues and calibrated frames at different locales, but the reference of gravity is ubiquitous on Earth. The pull of gravity on static objects provides a plummet which, together with the horizontal plane, defines a three-dimensional Cartesian frame for visual images. On the other hand, the gravitational acceleration of falling objects can provide a time-stamp on events, because the motion duration of an object accelerated by gravi

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Recent reports on vestibular testing, relevant to clinical diagnosis, are reviewed.Besides the case history and bedside examination, objective measurement of the vestibuloocular reflex in all of its facets remains the cornerstone in the diagnostic process.
RECENT FINDINGS: In recent years, this has been enhanced considerably by reliable unilateral tests for the otolith organs, most notably by vestibular-evoked myogenic potential recording and estimation of subjective visual vertical. In addition, progress has been made in the investigation of multisensory interaction, invol

This paper reviews the involvement of the parietal cortex and the hippocampus in three kinds of spatial memory tasks which all require a memory of a previously experienced movement in space. The first task compared, by means of positron emission tomography (PET) scan techniques, the production, in darkness, of self-paced saccades (SAC) with the reproduction, in darkness, of a previously learned sequence of saccades to visual targets (SEQ). The results show that a bilateral increase of activity was seen in the depth of the intraparietal sulcus and the medial superior parietal cortex (superior p

A 20-year-old man suffered a closed head injury followed by symptoms of right-sided labyrinthine concussion with complete clinical recovery within 3 weeks. Episodic vertigo and ataxic gait occurred after the ingestion of small amounts of alcohol over the next 2 years. Electro-oculography revealed a right-sided peripheral type vestibular lesion, only after taking alcohol. This was interpreted as an alcohol-induced impairment of central compensation following an incomplete recovery from right-sided labyrinthine trauma.

Using biomicroscopy of the eye conjunctiva, blood microcirculation was investigated in 200 patients with vestibular dysfunction (cervical osteochondrosis, Ménière's disease, neurocirculatory dystonia). All the patients showed microcirculation changes such as arteriolar spasms, reduced number of functioning capillaries, congestion and convolution of venules of medium and small caliber, and red blood cell aggregation. Capillary blood flow was intermittent: dash-dotted or bead-like. The arteriovenular coefficient decreased. Blood microcirculation changes were detected on the normal and affected s

The maintenance of upright stance in humans requires the integrative evaluation of vestibular, visual, and proprioceptive information. Recent experiments prove the existence of fast vestibulo-spinal reactions in humans. Their physiological significance for the compensation of sudden external displacements of the body is minor. For low frequency stabilization of the body, however, vestibulo-spinal afferents as well as vision and proprioception are important. Unilateral loss of vestibular function initially causes a tendency to fall to the ipsilateral side as well as nystagmus and vertigo. After
