Understanding risk in younger Veterans: Risk and protective factors associated with suicide attempt, homelessness, and arrest in a nationally representative Veteran sample.

Accumulating research suggests unique patterns of suicide risk, homelessness, and criminal-justice involvement in younger (age < 40) relative to older (aged 40+) cohorts of Veterans. However, potential explanations for these differences remain unclear. To address this gap, we analyzed data from a nationally representative sample of more than 4,000 US military Veterans to compare risk and protective correlations of prior suicidal behavior, homelessness, and justice-involvement in younger versus older Veterans. Results revealed that younger Veterans were significantly more likely than older Vete…

Prevalence of Civil Legal Needs and Assistance Among Low-Income US Veterans: Results from the National Veterans Homeless and Poverty Experiences Survey.

Low-income US veterans may experience civil legal needs that intersect with financial, housing, and health-related challenges, yet national data describing these patterns remain limited. This study provides national estimates of civil legal needs and receipt of assistance among veterans with household incomes below 300% of the federal poverty level. Data were drawn from the fifth wave (2025) of the National Veterans Homeless and Other Poverty Experiences (NV-HOPE) study, a nationally representative survey of low-income US veterans (N = 1384). Civil legal needs were assessed across seven domain…

Program evaluation of a peer-led posttraumatic stress disorder psychoeducation group for veterans considering treatment services in a Veterans Affairs specialty clinic.

There is a recognized need for efforts that promote utilization and completion of trauma-focused evidence-based psychotherapies (EBPs) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Patients referred to PTSD specialty clinics are often reluctant to engage in EBPs, especially if they are treatment-naive or had prior negative treatment experiences. To address this reluctance, we implemented PTSD101, a psychoeducation group led by peer specialists offered in a specialty PTSD clinic for veterans considering new PTSD services. This present study aimed to conduct a program evaluation of PTSD101 using pre…

Sex, Adverse Childhood Experiences, and Substance Use Disorders in US Military Veterans: Results From the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study.

OBJECTIVES: US veterans report more adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) than nonveterans, and a greater number of ACEs has been linked to substance use disorders (SUDs). To date, however, no study has examined whether specific ACEs may be linked to SUDs in this population in a sex-related fashion. METHODS: We analyzed data from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, a nationally representative survey of 4069 US veterans. ACEs, current alcohol use disorder (AUD), and current drug use disorder (DUD) were assessed using validated self-report measures. RESULTS: Being raised in a …

FOCUS mHealth Intervention for Veterans With Serious Mental Illness in an Outpatient Department of Veterans Affairs Setting: Feasibility, Acceptability, and Usability Study.

BACKGROUND: Veterans with serious mental illnesses (SMIs) face barriers to accessing in-person evidence-based interventions that improve illness management. Mobile health (mHealth) has been demonstrated to be feasible, acceptable, effective, and engaging among individuals with SMIs in community mental health settings. mHealth for SMIs has not been tested within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). OBJECTIVE: This study examines the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of an mHealth intervention for SMI in the context of VA outpatient care. METHODS: A total of 17 vete…

Use of Veterans Health Administration Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Treatment After Exiting Prison: The Health Care for Reentry Veterans Program.

The Veterans Health Administration (VA) Health Care for Reentry Veterans (HCRV) program links veterans exiting prison with treatment. Among veterans served by HCRV, national VA clinical data were used to describe contact with VA health care, and mental health and substance use disorder diagnoses and treatment use. Of veterans seen for an HCRV outreach visit, 56 % had contact with VA health care. Prevalence of mental health disorders was 57 %; of whom 77 % entered mental health treatment within a month of diagnosis. Prevalence of substance use disorders was 49 %; of whom 37 % entered substance …

Determinants of changes in self-rated health among Finnish war veterans: results from the Veteran Project 1992 and 2004 surveys.

Self-rated health is a strong predictor of mortality, morbidity, future functional capacity and the quality of life. Measures of self-rated health have been collected fairly regularly since the 1980s, but few of them focus on self-rated health among the elderly war veterans. The aim of this study was to examine changes in self-rated health among Finnish war veterans from 1992 to 2004 and to analyze the independent determinants associated with changes in veterans' self-rated health. The study population was 4999 veterans living in Finland, who participated in data collection of both the Veteran…

Male-perpetrated violence among Vietnam veteran couples: relationships with veteran's early life characteristics, trauma history, and PTSD symptomatology.

Using structural equation modeling, we examined the impact of early-life stressors, war-zone stressors, and PTSD symptom severity on partner's reports of recent male-perpetrated intimate partner violence (IPV) among 376 Vietnam veteran couples. Results indicated that several variables demonstrated direct relationships with IPV, including relationship quality with mother, war-zone stressor variables, and PTSD symptom severity. Importantly, retrospective reports of a stressful early family life, childhood antisocial behavior, and war-zone stressors were indirectly associated with IPV via PTSD. O

Secondary Pneumococcal Disease in Veterans With Viral Respiratory Infections.

BACKGROUND: Post-viral secondary bacterial infections, such as those caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, are strongly associated with influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). However, data evaluating this relationship with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are limited. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted in hospitalized patients in Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals across the United States from 1 January 2015 to 1 March 2025 to determine the risk of secondary S pneumoniae infection after respiratory viral disease. The primary outcome was development of S pneumoniae infecti…

Hurricanes, Neighborhood Disadvantage, and Cardiopulmonary Health in US Veterans.

IMPORTANCE: Global climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of hurricanes, which are associated with adverse health outcomes. Veterans may be more susceptible to the health impacts of hurricanes because of prior military exposures. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether hurricane exposure is associated with cardiovascular and respiratory events among US veterans. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study included US veterans enrolled in Veteran Health Administration (VHA) primary care who lived in areas affected by Hurricane Sandy (2011-2013) or Hurricane Har…

Developing Culturally Centered Outreach Materials for Rural Native Veterans.

Native Americans serve in the U.S. military at the highest rate per capita of any ethnoracial group and have elevated rates of mental health (MH) difficulties compared to other ethnoracial groups, including posttraumatic stress disorder, alcohol use disorders, and suicide. Almost half of Native Veterans live in rural areas; rurality is associated with significant barriers to MH services. Engaging in outreach with Native Veterans is an important pathway for connecting them with MH care, but the outreach process and educational materials must be culturally aligned to be more effective. We collab…

Treatment trends after hip fracture of veterans with osteoporosis.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis is the most common metabolic bone disease in the United States. It is often underdiagnosed and undertreated resulting in additional fragility fractures. Hip fractures specifically can lead to 8-36 % excess mortality at 1 year. It has been found that 80-95 % of patients in certain practice settings are discharged with insufficient antifracture treatment. We were interested in determining the frequency of transition from oral bisphosphonate to parenteral osteoporosis therapy following hospitalization for a hip fracture in veterans aged 65 and older. METHODS: Utilizing…

Adverse Events Involving Telehealth in the Veterans Health Administration.

BACKGROUND: Telehealth involves providing health care remotely using communication tools such as telephone, video, and remote patient monitoring. Research on telehealth has shown many benefits, including improved access to care and reduced costs, and drawbacks, including delays in care, breakdowns in communication, and missed diagnoses. The use of telehealth nationally, including in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), expanded dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite its increased use, few studies have described adverse events or the role of patient safety in the provision of t…
