Synchronizing videostroboscopic images of human laryngeal vibration with physiological signals.

PURPOSE: This report describes a new system that permits the precise correlation of videostroboscopic images with corresponding physiological measures, such as glottography and subglottic pressure. METHOD: A healthy volunteer had unilateral vocal cord paralysis induced by infiltrating local anesthesia into the recurrent and superior laryngeal nerve. Vocal-fold vibrations were monitored by photoglottography (PGG) and electroglottography (EGG). Analog signals from the EGG and PGG were synchronized with the video and correlated. RESULTS: The method described permits images to be sampled through…

[Raynaud's phenomenon and cutaneous changes due to hand-arm vibration].

Vibration of hand-held tools is considered to induce disorders in the peripheral circulation, peripheral nerve and organs, muscles, bones and joints (vibration syndrome). Above all, Raynaud's phenomenon is known as a prominent sign of vibration syndrome. This paper describes the findings obtained from the observation of the skin of the hands exposed to vibration and evaluates the relation between Raynaud's phenomenon and cutaneous changes. A total of 124 chain-saw workers in a forestry company in Gifu Prefecture were investigated in connection with compulsory health examination. In medical occ…

Risk assessment of vibration exposure and white fingers among platers.

The dose-response relationship between vibration exposure and vascular disorders in the hands was examined in platers. The study was based on a cross section of 89 platers and 61 office workers divided according to exposure to vibration into four groups. Vibration exposure was assessed by measuring the acceleration intensity on a sample of tools, together with both subjective rating and objective measurements of the exposure time. The frequency-weighted energy equivalent acceleration for 4 h was 4.6-4.7 m/s2. The point prevalence of white fingers was 42% for the plater category currently expos…

Vibration syndrome. Cutaneous and systemic manifestations in a jackhammer operator.

Vibration syndrome (VS), which typically presents as a variant of Raynaud's phenomenon, has been characterized recently as a multisystem disorder of the peripheral circulation, nerves, muscles, and joints. The sequelae of the disorder are irreversible, but most clinical evidence indicates that vibration injury is completely reversible by early intervention. Advanced VS occurred in a jackhammer operator; his condition went unrecognized for more than 11 years. The clinical findings illustrate the broad spectrum of pathologic abnormalities associated with VS and emphasize the need for increased p…

Study of the mechanism of vocal fold vibration during phonation.

The precise mechanism of vocal fold vibrations during phonation is not well known. At present it is impossible to say whether this movement is active or passive. Since the studies of MacLeod & Louis Sylvestre, we know that the vocal muscle is asynchronous and, so, can have a fast oscillatory movement induced by a continuous depolarization of the muscular fibre membranes. Thus, we believe at present that the glottic opening can be merely passive and that the closing can be both passive and active through a myogenic mechanism. The purpose of this work was to try to establish whether this concept…

Changes in cerebral norepinephrine induced by vibration or noise stress.

To investigate the effects of whole body vibration on the central nervous system, rats were exposed to various whole body vibrations and examined for changes in the levels of norepinephrine (NE) in whole brain or regions of the brain. Whole brain NE had decreased significantly (P less than 0.05) after an acceleration of 5.0G with a frequency of 20 Hz; and the decrease was also observed in the hypothalamus (P less than 0.01) and the hippocampus (P less than 0.10). Exposure to noise [100 dB (A)] caused a significant decrease in NE. This decrease related particularly to a significant decrease in …

Availability of temperature sense indices for diagnosis of vibration disease.

The correlation between stages of vibration disease and hypesthesia of temperature sense detected with our thermo-esthesiometer was analyzed. We measured the warm and cool thresholds among operators (644 males) in three occupational categories with vibration exposure from hand-held vibratory tools, such as grinder, drill, sander, impact-wrench, bush-cutter and chain-saw. Through the examination of the relationship between the temperature threshold and the stage of vibration disease, the following was revealed: The warm sense threshold elevated parallel with the aggravation of vibration disease…

Epidemiological survey of shipyard workers exposed to hand-arm vibration.

All 169 caulkers employed at a ship yard were examined to determine the prevalence of vibration syndrome due to pneumatic portable tools (chipping hammer and grinders). Vibration measurements and medical investigations were performed in the field between September 1977 and July 1978. Vibration spectra recorded on pneumatic tools were compared to ISO Draft Proposal No. 5369. The chipping hammer produced the highest acceleration levels and exceeded the maximum ISO limits even for a short exposure time (30 min per shift). The results of medical investigations pointed out that 78.7% of caulkers ex…

Permanent effects of low frequency vibration on the vestibular system.

Among 49 male workers, mean age 30 years, who had been working in conditions of extreme noise and vibration for between 6 months and 10 years vestibular disturbances could be shown (in the form of spontaneous nystagmus, lowered caloric excitability, or pathology in rotatory tests) in as high as 44.9%. The lesions were believed to have arisen in the peripheral vestibular organ as a consequence of the low frequency vibration.

Reflex effects of vibration in patients with spinal cord lesions.

The vibration reflex was studied in 49 patients with traumatic spinal cord lesions. It was elicited in all patients, even after presumably complete division of the cord. The vibration relfex consisted of a short-latency, brief outburst of phasic activity of motor units, followed by rapidly decreasing phasic component and a later slowly declining tonic component. When periods of vibration were repeated at short intervals of 2 to 10 seconds, the responses showed an approximately exponential decline, although the beginning of each subsequent response was always larger than the end of the precedin…

Effects of Vibration Frequency and Loading on Lower Limb Muscle Activation and Time-Varying Multi-Muscle Coactivation in Whole-Body Vibration Training among Recreational Runners.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the effects of vibration frequency and additional loading on lower limb muscle activation and coactivation during whole-body vibration (WBV) training in recreational runners. METHODS: Twenty-five male runners performed WBV training at six frequencies (0-50 Hz) under two loading conditions (no load vs. 20% body mass). Surface electromyography was used to record electromyography root mean square (EMGrms) in 11 lower limb muscles. Coactivation of six muscles was analyzed using the time-varying multi-muscle coactivation function. 1D statistical parametric mapping an…

Effects of Stochastic Resonance Whole-Body Vibration in Individuals with Unilateral Brain Lesion: A Single-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial: Whole-Body Vibration and Neuromuscular Function.

INTRODUCTION: Stochastic resonance whole-body vibration (SR-WBV) devices are promising sensorimotor interventions to address muscle weakness and to improve balance and mobility particularly in the elderly. However, it remains inconclusive whether individuals with stroke or traumatic brain injury (TBI) can profit from this method. The aim of this prospective single-blind randomized controlled trial was to investigate the effects of SR-WBV on muscle strength as well as gait and balance performance in this population. METHODS: Forty-eight individuals with stroke or TBI were randomly allocated to…

Nuclear resonance vibrational spectroscopy applied to [Fe(OEP)(NO)]: the vibrational assignments of five-coordinate ferrous heme-nitrosyls and implications for electronic structure.

This study presents Nuclear Resonance Vibrational Spectroscopy (NRVS) data on the five-coordinate (5C) ferrous heme-nitrosyl complex [Fe(OEP)(NO)] (1, OEP(2-) = octaethylporphyrinato dianion) and the corresponding (15)N(18)O labeled complex. The obtained spectra identify two isotope sensitive features at 522 and 388 cm(-1), which shift to 508 and 381 cm(-1), respectively, upon isotope labeling. These features are assigned to the Fe-NO stretch nu(Fe-NO) and the in-plane Fe-N-O bending mode delta(ip)(Fe-N-O), the latter has been unambiguously assigned for the first time for 1. The obtained NRVS …
