Genetic identification of bat species for pathogen surveillance across France.

With more than 1400 chiropteran species identified to date, bats comprise one-fifth of all mammalian species worldwide. Many studies have associated viral zoonoses with 45 different species of bats in the EU, which cluster within 5 families of bats. For example, the Serotine bats are infected by European Bat 1 Lyssavirus throughout Europe while Myotis bats are shown infected by coronavirus, herpesvirus and paramyxovirus. Correct host species identification is important to increase our knowledge of the ecology and evolutionary pattern of bat viruses in the EU. Bat species identification is comm…

Evidence of SARS-CoV-2 Exposure in Rodents from Rural Localities in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico.

Zoonotic diseases involve pathogen transmission between humans and animals, with most research focused on animal-to-human spillover. However, reverse zoonosis-the transmission of pathogens from humans to animals-remains understudied despite its potential ecological and epidemiological consequences. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic highlights this risk, as human-associated viruses may sporadically infect wildlife species and generate novel exposure pathways. To assess evidence of SARS-CoV-2 exposure in wildlife, we analyzed serum and rectal swab samples from rodents collected in rural localities of the

Integrated molecular, epidemiological, and bioinformatics perspectives on the Mpox virus: Implications for surveillance and Global Health preparedness.

Mpox has re-emerged as a significant global zoonotic threat, driven mainly by two large waves the 2022 worldwide Clade IIb outbreak and the 2024 Clade Ib epidemic in Central Africa. This review examines the challenges of interpreting this evolving virus from molecular, epidemiological, and bioinformatics perspectives, with a focus on global health workforce preparedness. Clade IIb largely moved through sexual transmission across countries, but Clade Ib has appeared in a wider population-women, children, and individuals infected through household spread without any sexual contact. Early case se

The global H5N1 influenza panzootic in mammals.

Influenza A viruses have caused more documented global pandemics in human history than any other pathogen1,2. High pathogenicity avian influenza viruses belonging to the H5N1 subtype are a leading pandemic risk. Two decades after H5N1 'bird flu' became established in poultry in Southeast Asia, its descendants have resurged3, setting off a H5N1 panzootic in wild birds that is fuelled by: (1) rapid intercontinental spread, reaching South America and Antarctica for the first time4,5; (2) fast evolution via genomic reassortment6; and (3) frequent spillover into terrestrial7,8 and marine mammals9.

The Emergence and Zoonotic Transmission of H10Nx Avian Influenza Virus Infections.

Avian influenza viruses pose a continuous threat to both poultry and human health, with significant economic impact. The ability of viruses to reassort and jump the species barrier into mammalian hosts generates a constant pandemic threat. H10Nx avian viruses have been shown to replicate in mammalian species without prior adaptation and have caused significant human infection and fatalities. They are able to rapidly reassort with circulating poultry strains and go undetected due to their low pathogenicity in chickens. Novel detections of both human reassortant strains and increasing endemicity

Surveillance for Adenoviruses in Bats in Italy.

Adenoviruses are important pathogens of humans and animals. Bats have been recognized as potential reservoirs of novel viruses, with some viruses being regarded as a possible zoonotic threat to humans. In this study, we report the detection and analysis of adenoviruses from different bat species in northern Italy. Upon sequence and phylogenetic analysis, based on a short diagnostic fragment of the highly-conserved DNA polymerase gene, we identified potential novel candidate adenovirus species, including an avian-like adenovirus strain. An adenovirus isolate was obtained in simian cell lines fr

Intangible and Economic Impacts of Hendra Virus Prevention Strategies.

Hendra virus (HeV), a potentially fatal zoonotic disease spread by flying foxes, to date has always infected humans via a spillover event from equine HeV infection. In a theoretical case study, we compared the impacts of two different HeV prevention strategies - vaccination and flying fox roost removal - using a recently developed framework that considers different stakeholder group perspectives. The perspectives of the four selected stakeholder groups regarding intangibles were inferred from public discussions and coverage in the media. For all stakeholder groups, the option to vaccinate hors

West Nile virus encephalitis in the United States.

West Nile virus appeared in New York City in 1999 and has subsequently spread over the eastern United States. The mode of transport across the Atlantic Ocean is unknown. During the past decade, encephalitis has been a more prominent feature of West Nile virus infection in Europe, the Middle East, and the United States, suggesting the emergence of more neurovirulent strains. The rapid spread of the virus and more serious disease caused by the virus have spurred vaccine development.

2019-nCoV (Wuhan virus), a novel Coronavirus: human-to-human transmission, travel-related cases, and vaccine readiness.

On 31 December 2019 the Wuhan Health Commission reported a cluster of atypical pneumonia cases that was linked to a wet market in the city of Wuhan, China. The first patients began experiencing symptoms of illness in mid-December 2019. Clinical isolates were found to contain a novel coronavirus with similarity to bat coronaviruses. As of 28 January 2020, there are in excess of 4,500 laboratory-confirmed cases, with > 100 known deaths. As with the SARS-CoV, infections in children appear to be rare. Travel-related cases have been confirmed in multiple countries and regions outside mainland China

A review of risk factors at the human-animal-environmental interface of garbage dumps that are driving current and emerging zoonotic diseases.

An increasing trend in zoonotic and emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) has been observed worldwide. Most EID outbreaks originate from wildlife, and these outbreaks often involve pathogen-host-environment interaction. Garbage dumps act as an interface between humans, animals, and the environment, from which EIDs could arise. Therefore, this review considers the presence of important pathogens associated with animals and vectors at garbage dumps from a One Health perspective, looking at animal, human, and environmental factors that play a role. A narrative review was performed focusing on four

'None of my ancestors ever discussed this disease before!' How disease information shapes adaptive capacity of marginalised rural populations in India.

Smallholder farmer and tribal communities are often characterised as marginalised and highly vulnerable to emerging zoonotic diseases due to their relatively poor access to healthcare, worse-off health outcomes, proximity to sources of disease risks, and their social and livelihood organisation. Yet, access to relevant and timely disease information that could strengthen their adaptive capacity remain challenging and poorly characterised in the empirical literature. This paper addresses this gap by exploring the role of disease information in shaping the adaptive capacity of smallholder farmer

Small subunit ribosomal metabarcoding reveals extraordinary trypanosomatid diversity in Brazilian bats.

BACKGROUND: Bats are a highly successful, globally dispersed order of mammals that occupy a wide array of ecological niches. They are also intensely parasitized and implicated in multiple viral, bacterial and parasitic zoonoses. Trypanosomes are thought to be especially abundant and diverse in bats. In this study, we used 18S ribosomal RNA metabarcoding to probe bat trypanosome diversity in unprecedented detail. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Total DNA was extracted from the blood of 90 bat individuals (17 species) captured along Atlantic Forest fragments of Espírito Santo state, southeast B

First report on detection and molecular characterization of alphacoronaviruses in the small Indian mongoose (Urva auropunctata).

BACKGROUND: Members of the species Alphacoronavirus suis/Alphacoronavirus-1 (αCoV-1) are important viral pathogens of canids/felids that exhibit complex evolutionary patterns and have been associated with interspecies transmission events including zoonoses. Mongooses (family Herpestidae, order Carnivora) are scavengers that pose a risk as potential carrier of viral pathogens. To date, there are no reports on the genetic make-up/diversity of CoVs circulating in mongoose populations. METHODS: Fecal samples obtained from 53 small Indian mongooses (Urva auropunctata) on the Caribbean island of St

Tick-Borne Encephalitis Virus: An Emerging Ancient Zoonosis?

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is one of the most important viral zoonosis transmitted by the bite of infected ticks. In this study, all tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) E gene sequences available in GenBank as of June 2019 with known date of isolation (n = 551) were analyzed. Simulation studies showed that a sample bias could significantly affect earlier studies, because small TBEV datasets (n = 50) produced non-overlapping intervals for evolutionary rate estimates. An apparent lack of a temporal signal in TBEV, in general, was found, precluding molecular clock analysis of all TBEV subtype

A Zoonotic Adenoviral Human Pathogen Emerged through Genomic Recombination among Human and Nonhuman Simian Hosts.

Genomics analysis of a historically intriguing and predicted emergent human adenovirus (HAdV) pathogen, which caused pneumonia and death, provides insight into a novel molecular evolution pathway involving "ping-pong" zoonosis and anthroponosis. The genome of this promiscuous pathogen is embedded with evidence of unprecedented multiple, multidirectional, stable, and reciprocal cross-species infections of hosts from three species (human, chimpanzee, and bonobo). This recombinant genome, typed as HAdV-B76, is identical to two recently reported simian AdV (SAdV) genomes isolated from chimpanzees

Autochthonous sporadic acute hepatitis E caused by two distinct subgenotype 3b hepatitis E virus strains with only 90% nucleotide identity.

Hepatitis E, which is caused by hepatitis E virus (HEV), is a public health concern in Japan, where the zoonotic food-borne transmission of HEV from domestic pigs and wild boars plays an important role. A 44-year-old Japanese man with autochthonous sporadic acute hepatitis E was admitted with general fatigue and moderate liver dysfunction. In the present study, two distinct HEV strains were recovered from the patient, who had consumed the raw or undercooked pig liver and intestine two or three times per week for 3 months before the disease onset. The recovered HEV strains were segregated into
