On the visibility of radiation at the human fovea.

1. Seeing-frequency functions (psi[S]) determined uniocularly for small (1.6'), brief images at the thoroughly dark-adapted human central fovea take the form of log-Gaussian integrals, for intensity or for exposure-time as the independent variable. They cannot be of Poisson type, since mean (tau') and standard deviation (sigma) are quite independently modifiable. 2. The properties of tau', the abscissa of inflection in the log-Gaussian integrals, and of sigma, are discussed in relation to customary determinations of spectral visibilities; agreements and certain necessary divergences are consid

Trends in US Emergency Department Visits for Pediatric Acute Ocular Injury.

IMPORTANCE: There is a lack of literature describing the incidence of pediatric acute ocular injury and associated likelihood of vision loss in the United States. Understanding national pediatric eye injury trends may inform future efforts to prevent ocular trauma. OBJECTIVE: To characterize pediatric acute ocular injury in the United States using data from a stratified, national sample of emergency department (ED) visits. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted. Study participants received care at EDs included in the 2006 to 2014 Nationwide Emergency De

Consider the eye in preventive healthcare - ocular findings, intraocular pressure and Schirmer tear test in ageing cats.

OBJECTIVES: Geriatric health screening in cats is highly recommended. However, information about normal and abnormal findings is scarce, especially regarding the eyes of ageing cats. This prospective study examined the influence of the ageing process on vision and ocular structures in older cats. METHODS: A total of 209 cats (aged 9-24 years) underwent physical examination, vision assessment, slit lamp biomicroscopy and ophthalmoscopy. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) measurement, Schirmer tear test (STT) reading and rebound tonometry were performed. Systemic disease was not a criterion for excl

Diagnosis of Central Retinal Artery Occlusion in the Emergency Department Using POCUS: A Case Series.

Introduction: Central Retinal Artery Occlusion is a cause of vision loss that warrants emergent evaluation. Ocular Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) is a non-invasive, inexpensive, and rapid modality to establish diagnosis with reduced time to consultation and treatment. Methods: This was a retrospective case series of patients evaluated at seven hospitals with diagnosis of CRAO over a two-year period. All patients underwent ocular POCUS performed by an emergency medicine clinician. Results: Nine patients were evaluated with mean vision loss of 21 hours. Overall, 88% of patients were diagnosed

Insight Into Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Unveiling Central Retinal Artery Occlusion as an Initial Indicator.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disorder with diverse clinical manifestations. Among these, ocular complications are notably prevalent, affecting up to one-third of patients. One rare but serious ocular complication of SLE is central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO), which can result in significant vision loss. We report a case of a young woman with sudden, painless vision loss in her right eye over two days. Fundoscopy confirmed CRAO, with no light perception in the affected eye and normal vision in the left eye. Physical examination revealed symptoms suggestive of a

Progressive Vision Loss From Uveal Melanoma with Extraocular Extension: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Uveal melanoma is the most common primary intraocular malignancy in adults, often diagnosed late in resource-limited settings. The diagnosis is made through a combination of clinical ophthalmologic examination, B-mode ultrasound, and histopathological study. This report details a case of a 67-year-old woman with progressive vision loss and ocular pain due to an inferomedial uveal melanoma to highlight therapeutic limitations from delayed diagnosis. CASE REPORT A 67-year-old woman presented with 3 years of progressive vision loss, ocular pain, and a pigmented inferomedial lesion in t

A rare asymptomatic metallic intraocular foreign body retained in the anterior chamber for 15 years: A case report.

RATIONALE: Intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs) are common in ocular injuries, but asymptomatic metallic IOFBs retained in the anterior chamber for years are rare. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 31-year-old female presented with blurred vision in her right eye after lumbar magnetic resonance imaging. Her best-corrected vision acuity was 0.6 in the right eye and 1.0 in the left eye. Slit-lamp examination revealed a brown granular foreign body in the anterior chamber and pigmentation of the limbus. Lens and retina examination indicated ocular siderosis. Corneal endothelioscopy revealed decreased endothelial

Associations between vision anomalies and sensorimotor processes in children aged 7-16 years.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Vision plays an important role in the normal motor development of children. Increased understanding of this relationship is important for providing appropriate advice in a clinical setting. BACKGROUND: Growing evidence indicates that vision anomalies are associated with reduced motor performance in children. This study investigated whether feedback loop noise, induced by common vision anomalies, adversely affects sensorimotor processing in children aged 7 to 16. METHODS: Sensorimotor function was measured in 409 children aged 7-8, 10-11, and 15-16 years as part of an annu

Characterising visual deficits in children of an urban elementary school in Taiwan.

PURPOSE: The aim was to screen children from Grades 1 to 6 in an urban elementary school in Central Taiwan for visual deficits and associated parameters and, as an extension, to examine the acceptance of cycloplegic therapy as well as the lag in optimal vision correction. METHODS: Of 900 students in one school, 731 participated in the study, with parental consent. Data from 694 students, who had also completed a vision correction history were analysed. In addition to body height and weight, the screening included vision, non-cycloplegic autorefraction and distance retinoscopy, axial length an

Choroidal Rupture Secondary to Treble Fishhook Ocular Injury.

INTRODUCTION: Choroidal rupture is a vision-threatening complication of blunt ocular trauma but is rarely reported in association with fishing-related injuries. We describe a case of choroidal rupture following ocular trauma from a fishing lure. CASE PRESENTATION: A 9-year-old boy presented with a penetrating fishhook right eye injury from a treble hook lure. Ophthalmic examination and imaging confirmed choroidal rupture. Initial visual acuity was 20/200 in the right eye and improved to 20/60 at 2 months postinjury. At 6 months, visual acuity declined to hand motions, and optical coherence to

Empowering vision: the impact of nursing-led educational program on patients with dry eye syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Dry eye syndrome (DES) is a widespread ocular condition affecting the general population. It is a complex disorder affecting the eye surface, characterized by a tear film imbalance and ocular symptoms such as eye ache, burning, irritation, dryness, blurred vision, and foreign body sensation. DES can reduce visual acuity, increase the risk of ocular infection, and significantly impact daily activities and quality of life. AIM: Determine the impact of nursing-led educational program on the management of DES and patients' health outcomes including the intensity of DES symptoms and th

Macular Pucker: A Devastating Complication in Ocular Toxoplasmosis.

Ocular toxoplasmosis has multiple devastating complications with possible recurrence. A potentially blinding complication of ocular toxoplasmosis is macular pucker. Here, we report a case of macular pucker in ocular toxoplasmosis treated with azithromycin and prednisolone. A 35-year-old woman complained of central scotoma for six days, which was associated with fever, headache, joint pain, and myalgia. Her visual acuity was counting finger OD and 6/18 OS. Her right eye optic nerve function test was impaired. Fundoscopy showed bilateral optic disc swelling that progressed to retinal fibrosis ov
