The Grating Disc (GD) is a simplified visual test designed for children 18 months to 4 approximately 5 years. The authors describe a syndrome diagnosed in workers who perform tasks requiring visual strain. The syndrome comprises worse visual control, discomfort in orbital area and characteristic changes of refraction and accommodation. The young people having emmetropia and myopia demonstrate temporary and later consistent increase of refraction, and the elderly ones--decreased refraction and early development of presbyopia. In both cases marked fall of accommodation was shown. The article suggests also a possible scheme describing pathogenesis of the syndrome.

The Pulfrich effect is a simply observable visual stereo phenomenon arising when the visual latency for one eye is longer than for the another. In the paper the review of the literature devoted to the application of this phenomenon for the ophthalmological diagnosis is presented. The authors come to the conclusion that the Pulfrich effect can be successfully used in clinical practice as an indicator of many ophthalmological disorders especially of optic neuritis.

Recent advances in technology have contributed to better evaluation of potential visual acuity in patients with cataracts. The blue field entoptic test, the clinical interferometers, and the Potential Acuity Meter are discussed with respect to their basic principles, clinical uses, advantages, and limitations. There are problems in evaluating these instruments, but their findings can play an important role in clinical decision making.

Undetected vision loss commonly occurs in older adults adding undue stress to those on dialysis. Poor vision is associated with increased risk of falls and decreased quality of life. Common visual impairments--presbyopia, cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy--often are detectable by visual acuity testing. Using various methods of visual acuity testing, nephrology nurses can perform vision testing quickly and inexpensively. Other nursing interventions also can improve eyesight.

This review summarizes clinically relevant outcomes from the Vision in Preschoolers (VIP) and VIP-Hyperopia in Preschoolers (VIP-HIP) studies. In VIP, refraction tests (retinoscopy, Retinomax, SureSight) and Lea Symbols Visual Acuity performed best in identifying children with vision disorders. In order to know the relationship between motion sickness and equilibrium ataxia, we performed Graybiel's ataxia test battery on 10 normal subjects: 1) before donning goggles which reversed the optical image horizontally and vertically; 2) while wearing the goggles and walking; and 3) after walking as long as possible up to 90 min.
