The disorders of the glutamatergic neurotransmission have been associated with pathogenesis of autism. In this study we evaluated the impact of the in vivo and ex vivo test methodology on measurements of levels of neurotransmitter amino acids in hippocampus of rats for valproic acid- (VPA) and thalidomide- (THAL) induced models of autism. The main goal was to compare the changes in concentrations of glutamate (Glu), glutamine (Gln) and GABA between both autistic groups and the control, measured in vivo and ex vivo in homogenates. The rat pups underwent three in vivo tests: ultrasonic vocalizat

OBJECTIVE: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction, communication, and repeated stereotypic behaviour. Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is the most potent and well-known mycotoxin in various food sources. Despite its propensity to generate significant biochemical and structural changes in human and animal tissues, the influence of AFB1 on ASD has yet to be thoroughly studied. Mounting evidence indicates that chemokine receptors play a crucial function in the central nervous system and are implicated in developing sever

OBJECTIVE: Vocal fold paralysis may result from surgical complications, trauma, tumor, or unknown causes. When both cords are affected, paramedian fixation can lead to life-threatening obstruction. Current treatments, including tracheostomy, cordotomy, and arytenoidectomy, compromise speech and swallow function to maintain a safe airway. To preserve all three critical laryngeal functions, Otolaryngologists need a solution for bilateral vocal fold paralysis that restores motion. This study uses implantable electromagnet technology to create dynamic vocal fold movement in a proof-of-concept, pre

Respiratory diseases remain one of the most significant health challenges in modern swine production, leading to substantial economic losses, compromised animal welfare, and increased antimicrobial use. In recent years, advances in artificial intelligence (AI), particularly machine learning and deep learning, have enabled the development of non-invasive, continuous monitoring systems based on pig vocalizations. Among these, audio-based technologies have emerged as especially promising tools for early detection and monitoring of respiratory disorders under real farm conditions. This review prov

It is unknown if the lung deposition of surfactant administered via a catheter placed through a laryngeal mask airway (LMA) is equivalent to that obtained by bolus instillation through an endotracheal tube. We compare the lung deposition of surfactant delivered via two types of LMA with the standard technique of endotracheal instillation. 25 newborn piglets on continuous positive airway pressure support (CPAP) were randomized into three groups: 1-LMA-camera (integrated camera and catheter channel; catheter tip below vocal cords), 2-LMA-standard (no camera, no channel; catheter tip above the gl

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of subarachnoid anesthesia with ketamine during transcervical artificial insemination (TCAI) on the welfare of ewes and on subsequent pregnancy rates. Ninety Suffolk adult ewes were randomized into three treatment groups: control group (CG), which underwent the TCAI procedure as established by cervical traction (CG; n = 30) and two groups that received subarachnoid anesthesia with ketamine at a dose of either 0.75 mg/kg (KE0.75; n = 30) or 1.5 mg/kg (KE1.5; n = 30) 5 min before the cervical traction procedure. Intrauterine insemination was performed usin

Although, clinical studies reported hyperactivation of the auditory system and amygdala in patients with auditory hallucinations (hearing others' but not one's own voice, independent of any external stimulus), neural mechanisms of self/other attribution is not well understood. We recorded neuronal responses in the dorsal amygdala including the lateral amygdaloid nucleus to ultrasonic vocalization (USVs) emitted by subjects and conspecifics during free social interaction in 16 adult male rats. The animals emitting the USVs were identified by EMG recordings. One-quarter of the amygdalar neurons

OBJECTIVES: To develop and characterise an experimental model of recurrent laryngeal nerve injury for the study of viral gene therapy.
METHODS: Twenty rats underwent unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve injury. After vocal fold mobility was observed, larynges were serially sectioned, and immunohistochemical techniques were employed to stain for neurofilament and motor endplates in order for a blinded investigator to determine the percentage of nerve-endplate contact, as a histological indicator of an intact neuromuscular connection.
RESULTS: All animal procedures resulted in complete, ipsila

A total of 20 cattle and five sheep out of a larger group of animals that were experimentally challenged with virus as part of the required protocol for a vaccine trial developed clinical signs of rabies. All five sheep and 18 of the cattle tested positive for rabies in a direct fluorescent antibody (FA) test. The remaining two cattle had suspicious FA results. Prospective observations are reported in this study. In the diseased cattle, the average incubation period was 15.1 days and the average morbidity period was 3.7 days. Of those, the naive cattle had significantly shorter incubation and

We examined possible contributions of neurogenesis to sex differences in the vocalization pathway of the South African clawed frog, Xenopus laevis. Birthdates of neurons were obtained from autoradiograms of animals receiving tritiated thymidine from gastrulation through 1 month after metamorphosis. Thymidine availability studies showed that 80% of the [3H]-thymidine injected into embryos and tadpoles was incorporated into the DNA of dividing cells within 3 hours. We observed 3 patterns of neurogenesis: late-short, a short burst of proliferation occurred late in development in the anterior preo

Vocal fold (VF) fibroblasts are the central subject of interest in fibrogenesis and wound healing after VF injury. Scar fibroblasts (SF) exhibit an aberrant production of several extracellular matrix (ECM) components which lead either to VF fibrosis or scarless wound healing. This study aimed to investigate the role of age at the time of injury on ECM production of SF. This is designed as an animal study. VF injury was established unilaterally in eight male Sprague-Dawley rats [3 months of age (n = 4), 11 months of age (n = 4)], while the other side was left intact. Three months after injury t

Intraspecific variation is a prerequisite for natural selection and can manifest in various phenotypic traits, including vocal signals. However, classifying individuals based on their vocalizations, or acoustic individual identification (AIID), remains a significant challenge. This is particularly true for species that use rapidly varying echolocation calls for orientation. Here, we demonstrate that deep learning can overcome the limitations of traditional methods and reveal persistent individual signatures within bat echolocation calls. We recorded 17 584 echolocation calls from 34 individual

OBJECTIVE: The optimal duration of voice rest after phonomicrosurgery remains a subject of debate, as clinical studies on its effect on vocal fold wound healing have yielded conflicting results, and a controlled animal model for investigating voice rest is currently unavailable. This study aimed to determine the optimal postoperative voice rest duration using a controlled rabbit model.
METHODS: Building on our established rabbit model for graded voice rest, we created two distinct phonomicrosurgery injury models: one involving the superficial lamina propria (SLP) and another extending to the

Sensory issues are common in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and can significantly affect daily living. The phenomena of gating and habituation of event-related potentials (ERPs) to repetitive stimuli have been suggested as potential biomarkers reflecting atypical sensory processing in ASD. Sensory hypersensitivity and anxiety are closely related in ASD, and habituation to emotionally evocative stimuli may serve as a more sensitive biomarker for sensory hypersensitivity symptoms. However, previous studies have primarily used tonal stimuli, and there has been little investigation into whether h

Deviance detection describes an increase of neural response strength caused by a stimulus with a low probability of occurrence. This ubiquitous phenomenon has been reported for humans and multiple other species, from subthalamic areas to the auditory cortex. Cortical deviance detection has been well characterized by a range of studies using a variety of different stimuli, from artificial to natural, with and without a behavioral relevance. This allowed the identification of a broad variety of regularity deviations that are detected by the cortex. Moreover, subcortical deviance detection has be

OBJECTIVE: Laryngeal pacing (LP) is a highly anticipated therapeutic option for patients suffering from bilateral vocal fold paralysis with synkinesis. Identification of candidate patients requires confirmation of a stimulable posterior cricoidarythenoid muscle (PCA) by neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES). A silicone endoscopic cap electrode (ECE50) was designed to be operated as an endoscopic extension tip for selective PCA stimulation and confirmation of a glottic opening movement in a setting comparable to a gastroscopy procedure.
METHODS: A porcine animal model (n = 6) was applied
