Clinical phase I/feasibility study of the next generation indwelling Provox voice prosthesis (Provox Vega).

CONCLUSIONS: Provox Vega prostheses demonstrate good short-term feasibility, and their optimized airflow-resistance design offers laryngectomy patients indwelling voice prostheses with more choices in outer diameters without sacrificing (too) much in voice quality. OBJECTIVES: Technological progress enables improvement of in vitro airflow characteristics of voice prostheses and design of voice prostheses with smaller outer diameters. This could potentially improve voice quality in users of Provox2, and avoid diminished voice quality in users of prostheses with smaller outer diameters. METHOD…

Cisplatin in combination with Phenethyl Isothiocyanate (PEITC), a potential new therapeutic strategy for malignant pleural mesothelioma.

BACKGROUND: Voice is the critical component of communication, and impairment in voice quality tends to affect the overall health status of an individual. Voice quality tends to impair significantly in head and neck cancer patients because the tumors are usually present near the structures which were responsible for the production of voice. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to analyze the voice quality in head and neck cancer patients using three instruments including VHI, EORTC-QLQ-H&N35 and SSS. The objective of the study includes analysis of voice quality impairment in different domains in…

Role of absolute versus relative voice rest in post-operative management of benign vocal fold lesions.

OBJECTIVE: Most otolaryngologists advocate absolute voice rest after laryngeal surgery, which proves difficult for patients, so we decided to evaluate the role of absolute voice rest versus relative voice rest in the post-operative management of benign lesions. METHODS: Forty patients were recruited and divided in two groups: absolute voice rest and relative voice rest. Pre- and post-operative voice analysis (fundamental frequency, jitter, shimmer, voice handicap index, voice-related quality-of-life scale scores and compliance) were noted at one week and one month. RESULTS: Voice analysis pa

[Vocal fatigue as an indicator of complex voice disorders-a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge].

Vocal fatigue is increasingly observed among professional voice users (e.g., teachers). This pathologic state is associated with restrictions in everyday life and is considered to be an indicator of complex voice disorders. Since there are few systematic studies on the phenomenon, there is currently no uniform definition or diagnostic workup. Based on the case study of a professional speaker, possibilities for a structured vocal fatigue assessment are presented. These are discussed with regard to their laryngoscopic, instrumental acoustic ("performance fatigue") and subjective symptom-related

Effectiveness of Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract Exercises (SOVTEs) in Patients with Dysphonia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dysphonia is a disorder characterized by an alteration in the overall quality of the voice which reduces quality of life. Therefore, we assessed the effectiveness of SOVTEs in the management of dysfunctional and organic dysphonia for acoustic, perceptual-auditive, aerodynamic parameters and self-perception of the disease. METHODS: a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted. Findings were reported according to the PRISMA statement. Five databases were searched for RCTs and non- or quasi-RCTs. Studies were independently assessed using the Cochrane Risk of bias (RoB) and RO

Pilot Evaluation of Community-Based Vocal Health Screenings.

INTRODUCTION: Community-based health fairs can help identify at-risk populations, improve health literacy, and facilitate access to medical services. No community-based screenings specifically targeting vocal health were identified in the literature. The purpose of this study is to compare the results of community-based vocal health screenings across two populations: a group of community members with unknown risk of voice problems, and a group of actors belonging to a profession with a known increased risk of voice problems. METHODS: Vocal health screenings were conducted at two free, communi

[Hoarseness].

By means of measuring fundamental frequency, amplitude and voice quality (signal-to-noise ratio) of voiced signal segments in speech, a three-dimensional representation was established. The record of voice quality versus pitch and intensity overcomes all the disadvantages which are met within the voice field (sustained vowels, extreme voice sound pressures, missing quality information etc.).

Changes in the voice production of solo singers across concert halls.

To investigate the influence of room acoustics on singing, four lyrical singers (soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, baritone) performed four musical pieces in eight different venues (from dry studio to reverberant church). In addition to vocal intensity measured by a near-field microphone, glottal behavior (vibratory fundamental frequency and contact quotient) was assessed by electroglottography. Statistical linear mixed models showed that the variance in vocal performance was partly explained by room acoustics. Complementary to previous results on voice musical features influenced by timbre and l
