Nurses' health and work experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic in Swedish prehospital and hospital care: a deductive content analysis through the lens of the swAge model.

Working as a nurse offers job security but also poses risks for mental health issues. This study aims to explore factors and processes that affected health and work experiences among nurses in Sweden during the COVID-19 pandemic. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 nurses from high COVID-19 patient load areas (ambulance, emergency departments, ICU, infection wards, and specialized COVID-19 wards). A deductive content analysis using the SwAge model's nine determinant areas, was performed. The COREQ-checklist was adhered to. Nurses were prepared to sacrifice their health for the we

Trajectories of Postpartum Recovery: What is Known and Not Known.

Women's postpartum health is a public health issue that has lifelong consequences. Timely recognition and treatment of physical and mental health issues can have positive health consequences while lack of access to effective treatments or health care services can lead to long-term health problems. To advance knowledge of priority health symptoms and trajectories of postpartum recovery from women's health perspectives, we share findings from the Maternal health And Maternal Morbidity in Ireland (MAMMI) study. Data from 3047 first-time mothers recruited to a longitudinal maternal health study in

First Alarm and Time of Diagnosis in Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Early diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is of paramount importance as it opens the road to early intervention, which is associated with better prognosis. However, early diagnosis is often delayed until preschool or school age. The purpose of the current retrospective study was to explore the age of recognition of first alarming symptoms in boys and girls as well as the age at diagnosis of different subtypes of ASD in a small sample. A total of 128 parents' of children with ASDs were participated in the survey by completing a self-report questionnaire about early signs and symptoms th

The voice of non-pregnant women on alcohol consumption during pregnancy: a focus group study among women in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Consensus is that fetal exposure to alcohol is harmful. Abstinence while trying to conceive and throughout pregnancy is recommended. Despite this, there are many women who consume alcohol around conception and until pregnancy recognition. The aim of this study was to explore the voice of non-pregnant women concerning alcohol consumption and its relation to pregnancy. METHODS: Data were collected through seven focus groups interviews with 34 women of fertile age, who were neither pregnant nor mothers. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken, recorded and transcribed verbatim and

Clinical Advice by Voice Assistants on Postpartum Depression: Cross-Sectional Investigation Using Apple Siri, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Microsoft Cortana.

BACKGROUND: A voice assistant (VA) is inanimate audio-interfaced software augmented with artificial intelligence, capable of 2-way dialogue, and increasingly used to access health care advice. Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common perinatal mood disorder with an annual estimated cost of $14.2 billion. Only a small percentage of PPD patients seek care due to lack of screening and insufficient knowledge of the disease, and this is, therefore, a prime candidate for a VA-based digital health intervention. OBJECTIVE: In order to understand the capability of VAs, our aim was to assess VA response

A portable non-contact tongue imaging system with automated analysis for community and home settings.

BACKGROUND: Traditional tongue inspection relies on visual assessment by practitioners, which introduces subjectivity and compromises reproducibility. Existing solutions often rely on enclosed, dedicated acquisition instruments with nontrivial operation, whereas mobile self-capture approaches are more accessible but sensitive to environmental variability, making reliable analysis challenging in real-world use. OBJECTIVE: To develop a portable non-contact tongue imaging and automated analysis system that is robust to real-world acquisition variability. METHODS: We designed a portable acquisit

Life-Threatening Neck Hematoma After Fine-Needle Aspiration of a Thyroid Nodule in a Patient With End-Stage Renal Disease.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (FNA) of thyroid nodules is a widely performed and generally safe procedure with a low complication rate. While minor bleeding and small hematomas are relatively common, the occurrence of a large, life-threatening hematoma is exceedingly rare. This case report describes a patient who developed a delayed, severe cervical hematoma several days after undergoing thyroid FNA. We review contributing risk factors and propose strategies to help minimize such complications. CASE REPORT: A 68-year-old female patient with past medical histor

'The case for a pro-active approach to advance care planning in older person's mental health - insights from interdisciplinary mental healthcare professionals.

INTRODUCTION: Advance care planning (ACP) involves nuanced conversations to elicit an individual's beliefs, values, and preferences regarding future care. However, despite recognition of the positive impact, representative population surveys indicate low uptake of ACP, figures replicated internationally. Complex medical issues, including cognitive impairment, can interact with and exacerbate mental health challenges in later life, which can make decision-making more complex. ACP and Advance Healthcare Directives support people during periods of incapacitating mental illness. This paper reporti

Recurrent Airway Swelling in a Patient With Lymphoproliferative Disorder: A Diagnostic Challenge Between Anaphylaxis and Acquired Angioedema.

Distinguishing between anaphylaxis and bradykinin-mediated angioedema can be difficult in the acute setting, particularly when airway compromise dominates the presentation. Recognition is crucial, as management strategies differ substantially. An 84-year-old woman presented to the Emergency Department in Preston with rapidly progressive swelling of the lips, tongue, and neck, accompanied by dysphagia and a hoarse voice. She had self-administered multiple doses of an adrenaline autoinjector before arrival. On examination, she was hemodynamically stable and afebrile, with marked tongue and floor
