Analysis of a broad range of volatile organic compounds in environmental air with dual-compartment micropreconcentrators.

Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) and the aldehydes formaldehyde and acetaldehyde are toxic organic compounds. Currently, there is no single method for sampling and analyzing these compounds in environment air concurrently. We report here a microfabricated dual-compartment micropreconcentrator device that combines physical adsorption of BTEX with derivatization of aldehydes for analysis of all these compounds by GC-MS in a single run. The micropreconcentrator contains two compartments to accommodate two different sorbents. One compartment is packed with Carbopack X to trap BTEX

Identification of quality-related volatile organic compounds in legume seeds exposed to hydropriming and artificial ageing.

Seed deterioration remains a major constraint in agriculture, limiting crop productivity and sustainability. While volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been primarily studied in the context of seed ageing, little is known about VOCs emissions associated with seed priming treatments. Therefore, this work aims to identify and compare quality related VOCs in legume seeds subjected to hydropriming (HP) and artificial ageing (AA). HP, a cost-effective priming method involving water soaking and dry-back, enhances germination and stress resilience, while AA induces seed deterioration after exposure…

Wood-Based Panels and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): An Overview on Production, Emission Sources and Analysis.

The emission and presence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the indoor air of houses and factories has been a growing topic of debate in the industry and related research fields. Given the extended times people in modern society spend indoors, monitoring VOCs is crucial due to the associated potential health hazards, with formaldehyde being particularly noteworthy. Wood and wood-based panels (WBPs) (the latter constituting a significant segment of the wood-transforming industry, being widely used in furniture, construction, and other applications) are known sources for the emission of VO…

From volatile organic compounds to aerosols: quantum-level insights into humidity-induced cluster formation in atmospheres.

New particle formation (NPF) is a key factor in producing the aerosol populations in the atmosphere. This has enormous effects on controlling the climate, improving air quality, and protecting human health. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a significant cause of NPF because they help prenucleation clusters form, which are the building blocks of aerosol particles. We employed density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the structure and thermodynamics of molecular clusters composed of acetic acid, acetone, acetaldehyde, and formaldehyde in the presence of ammonia and varying amounts of …

Volatile organic compounds exposure with risk of thyroid function in U.S. general population: 2007-2012 NHANES.

BACKGROUND: The link between exposure to environmental hazards and thyroid function has been relatively well established. However, evidence on environmental exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and thyroid function in the general population remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To assess the impact of individual and joint effects of VOCs exposure on thyroid function in a representative sample of U.S. general population. RESULTS: The findings from the WQS suggested a positive correlation between VOCs co-exposure and FT3 (β = 0.033, 95 % CI: 0.014, 0.025), as well as a negative correlation wit…

Exposure to volatile organic compounds and mortality in US adults: A population-based prospective cohort study.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are ubiquitous in both indoor and outdoor environments. Evidence on the associations of individual and joint VOC exposure with all-cause and cause-specific mortality is limited. Measurements of 15 urinary VOC metabolites were available to estimate exposure to 12 VOCs in the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2006 and 2011-2018. The environment risk score (ERS) was calculated using LASSO regression to reflect joint exposure to VOCs. Follow-up data on death were obtained from the NHANES Public-Use Linked Mortality File through Decem…

Rapid Detection of Explicit Volatile Organic Compounds for Early Diagnosis of Lung Cancer Using MoSi2N4 Monolayer.

In this study, we investigate the adsorption and sensing capabilities of pristine (MoSi2N4) and nitrogen-vacancy induced (MoSi2N4-VN) monolayers towards five potential lung cancer volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as 2,3,4-trimethylhexane (C9H20), 4-methyloctane (C9H20), o-toluidine (C7H9N), Aniline (C6H7N), and Ethylbenzene (C8H10). Spin-polarized density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that MoSi2N4 weakly adsorb the mentioned VOCs, whereas the introduction of nitrogen vacancies significantly enhances the adsorption energies ( E a d s ${{E}_{ads}}$ ), both in gas phase a…

Interfacial photochemistry of marine diatom lipids: Abiotic production of volatile organic compounds and new particle formation.

The global importance of abiotic oceanic production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) still presents a source of high uncertainties related to secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. A better understanding of the photochemistry occurring at the ocean-atmosphere interface is particularly important in that regard, as it covers >70% of the Earth's surface. In this work, we focused on the photochemical VOCs production at the air-water interface containing organic material from authentic culture of marine diatom Chaetoceros pseudocurvisetus. Abiotic VOCs production upon irradiation of materia…
