Epidemiology of Foot and Ankle Injuries in NCAA Jumping Athletes in the United States During 2009-2014.

BACKGROUND: Foot and ankle injuries comprise a significant proportion of all injuries sustained by National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athletes. In particular, sports that combine jumping and rapid changes in direction are associated with increased lower extremity injuries. PURPOSE: To describe the epidemiology of foot and ankle injuries in men's and women's jumping sports, including NCAA men's and women's basketball, women's volleyball, and women's gymnastics, during the 2009-2010 through 2013-2014 seasons. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study. METHODS: Injury-surveilla

Aortic Root Enlargement in a Young Athlete.

BACKGROUND: Aortic enlargement in athletes presents multiple clinical challenges including defining abnormal aortic size, the role of genetic testing, and counseling on sports participation. CASE SUMMARY: A 23-year-old former collegiate volleyball player was incidentally discovered to have an aortic root diameter of 4.4 cm. Genetic testing was negative for any variants associated with heritable thoracic aortic disease (HTAD). Concern remains for HTAD, and corresponding physical activity modifications and a surveillance plan have been established for this athlete. DISCUSSION: Genetic testing

Simultaneous Bilateral Patellar Tendon Rupture in a Young Adult Male: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

A bilateral patellar tendon rupture is extremely rare and has only been documented in case reports. Although the etiology remains unknown, predisposing factors include steroid usage, systemic diseases, and tendinopathies. In the present case, a healthy 33-year-old male with a prior history of bilateral patellar tendonitis and a diagnosis of Osgood-Schlatter disease during adolescence experienced simultaneous bilateral patellar tendon rupture after playing volleyball. He underwent bilateral patellar repair without complications. In the absence of trauma, spontaneous bilateral patellar tendon ru

Aortic root dilatation among young competitive athletes: echocardiographic screening of 1929 athletes between 15 and 34 years of age.

BACKGROUND: Aortic dilatation can be lethal for young competitive athletes. The prevalence among athletes is not known, however, and thus a reasonable approach to early recognition remains uncertain. METHODS AND RESULTS: Echocardiograms of 1929 normotensive athletes 15 to 34 years of age were analyzed. Five (0.26%) athletes had aortic dilatation; 4 of the 5 played basketball. This made the prevalence of aortic dilatation 0.96% (4 of 415) among basketball and volleyball players, who represented a population of especially tall athletes. Tallness aside, only 2 of the 5 athletes had features of M

Long-term functional outcome after primary repair of the lateral ligaments of the ankle.

We retrospectively reexamined a total of 100 patients 6 to 8 years after primary repair of ruptured lateral ligaments of the ankle. Fifty-nine percent of the injuries had occurred in sports; the other main causes of the injuries were accidents at work (12%), in traffic (10%), and at home (4%). Almost two-thirds of the sports injuries were sustained in volleyball. The most common type of injury was a combined rupture of the anterior talofibular and the calcaneofibular ligaments (66 patients). According to subjective assessment, 74 patients had excellent or good results. For the anterior drawer

Femoral neck structure in adult female athletes subjected to different loading modalities.

UNLABELLED: Loading modality is a strong external determinant of structure and concomitant strength of the femoral neck. Particularly effective seem to be loadings, which arise from high impacts or impacts from atypical loading directions. INTRODUCTION: Physical loading plays an important role, not only in the process of bone modeling and remodeling, but also in shaping a mechanically appropriate bone structure. This study aimed at testing the hypothesis that the type of loading partly determines the femoral neck structure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 255 premenopausal female athletes

Sport-Specific Increased Risk of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury Following a Concussion in Collegiate Female Lacrosse.

Poor neurocognitive performance has been associated with a greater risk of musculoskeletal injury, and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury prevention protocols include exercises to improve neuromuscular control. Research shows that a concussion elevates the risk for subsequent lower-extremity injury, because concussions lead to lower neurocognitive performance. Studies have been conducted using data within individual male sports, such as football and rugby, or across collegiate sports in aggregate; no study has focused on women's sports. Using 7 years of data collected by athletic training

Patellar tendinopathy - recent developments toward treatment.

Patellar tendinopathy (PT) is a clinical and chronic overuse condition of unknown pathogenesis and etiology marked by anterior knee pain typically manifested at the inferior pole of the patella. PT has been referred to as "jumper's knee" since it is particularly common among populations of jumping athletes, such as basketball and volleyball players. Due to its common refractory response to conservative treatment, a variety of new treatments have emerged recently that include dry-needling, sclerosing injections, platelet-rich plasma therapy, arthroscopic surgical procedures, surgical resection

Participation in aesthetic sports and girls' weight concerns at ages 5 and 7 years.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between participation in aesthetic, or appearance-oriented, sports and weight concerns was assessed among young girls. METHOD: Participants were part of a larger longitudinal study and included 197 and 192 girls and their mothers when girls were 5 and 7 years, respectively. At each age, girls' weight concerns and sport participation were assessed and girls were classified as participating in aesthetic sports (dance, gymnastics, cheerleading, baton twirling, swimming, aerobics, figure skating), non-aesthetic sports (volleyball, soccer, basketball, softball, hockey,

[Endoscopic therapy of pre-patellar bursitis].

Prepatellar bursitis often results from sport-specific activities (e.g. wrestling, soccer, volleyball or ice hockey) or from work-related injuries (e.g. concrete finishing). In such cases, when conservative therapy is not successful, the bursa must be openly removed. Over a period of five years, our clinic conducted a total of 22 arthroscopic bursectomies. The following describes the endoscopic surgery, the postoperative clinical treatment and the results of the associated therapy. A follow-up examination of 22 patients were clinically revealed as successful operation. In one case a recurring

Relationship of fatigued run and rapid stop to ground reaction forces, lower extremity kinematics, and muscle activation.

Fatigue may be related to lower extremity injury. The effect of lower extremity fatigue on ground reaction force production, lower extremity kinematics, and muscle activation during the landing phase of a run and rapid stop was investigated. Subjects were 19 female, Division 1 collegiate basketball and volleyball players (mean age = 20.8 +/- 1.8 years, mean weight = 71.7 +/- 6.9 kg, mean height = 174 +/- 5 cm). Dominant leg ground reaction and muscle activation data were sampled at 2,000 Hz. Lower extremity kinematic data were sampled at 200 Hz, and three-dimensional analysis was performed. Kn

Development of a simple algorithm to detect big air jumps and jumps during skiing.

Jumping is an important task in skiing, snowboarding, ski jumping, figure skating, volleyball and many other sports. In these examples, jumping tasks are a performance criterion, and therefore detailed insight into them is important for athletes and coaches. Therefore, this paper aims to introduce a simple and easy-to-implement jump detection algorithm for skiing using acceleration data from inertial measurement units attached to ski boots. The algorithm uses the average of the absolute vertical accelerations of the two boots. We provide results for different parameter settings of the algorith

An Adolescent Case of Citrin Deficiency With Severe Anorexia Mimicking Anorexia Nervosa.

We report a 12-year-old female citrin-deficient patient presenting with severe anorexia and body weight loss, mimicking the restricting type of anorexia nervosa (AN). She showed normal development until age 10 years when she started to play volleyball at school. She then became gradually anorexic, and her growth was stunted. At age 12, she was admitted to hospital because of severe anorexia and thinness. She was first thought to have AN, and drip infusion of glucose solution and high-calorie drinks were given, but her condition deteriorated further. She had a history of neonatal hepatitis and

Defect in the articular process of the lumbar facet.

Bone defect in the lumbar articular facet is rarely noted, and only a few reports on its clinical course have been presented. We report on seven cases with lumbar inferior facet defect whose symptoms were mimicking spondylolysis. We have found three types of the defect shape on radiographs: linear, blunt, and irregular. There were five cases with linear type, one with blunt, and one with irregular. All patients had persistent low back pain, especially when doing physical activity or sports, but no one had history of major trauma or accident. Injection of a small amount of anesthetic temporaril

Preliminary Evaluation of a Novel Point of Care Diagnostic Device for Sports-Related Concussion.

OBJECTIVE: Visinin-like protein 1 (VILIP-1) is a neuron-specific calcium sensor protein rapidly released into blood after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and may be a suitable biomarker for identification of sports-related concussion (SRC). The objective of the study is to test if quantification of a specific post-translationally modified (ubiquitinated) form of VILIP-1 (ubVILIP-1) from a fingerstick blood sample using a point of care (POC) lateral flow device (LFD) can be used to rapidly identify athletes with SRC. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: Side-line blood collection at

Three Key Findings When Diagnosing Shoulder Multidirectional Instability: Patient Report of Instability, Hypermobility, and Specific Shoulder Tests.

Shoulder instability has varying mechanisms of injury, direction, and severity. Classification systems based on clustering signs and symptoms have been developed to define subgroups of shoulder instability. Despite this attempt at homogeneity, multidirectional instability (MDI) suffers from the same lack of diagnostic clarity as low back pain. In this Viewpoint, the authors outline 3 key areas to address when diagnosing MDI: patient interview, medical comorbidities, and specific shoulder tests and measures. J Orthop Sports Phys Ther 2020;50(2):52-54. doi:10.2519/jospt.2020.0602.

Chronic ankle instability in sporting populations.

BACKGROUND: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is a term used to identify certain insufficiencies of the ankle joint complex following an acute ankle injury. Acute ankle injuries are often associated with sporting mishaps; however, this review was the first to identify the aspects of CAI (perceived instability, mechanical instability and recurrent sprain), and persisting symptoms following an ankle sprain, that have been reported within sporting cohorts. OBJECTIVE: To determine the presence of common aspects of CAI within individual sports. METHODS: A systematic search of the MEDLINE, Web of Sc

[A rare cause of embolic ischemia of the hand: an isolated aneurism of a branch of the axillary artery].

A 48-year-old man was admitted for subacute ischemia of the right hand of sudden onset. The patient, who participated in amateur sports, had an uneventful medical history. Duplex ultrasonography revealed thrombosis of the right radial and ulnar arteries. On heparin, the clinical course was favorable and investigations to search for an embolic source revealed an aneurism of the posterior circumflex artery (arteriography). The etiological work-up was negative as was the search for other aneurismal locations. Surgical excision was carried out. Pathology examination of the surgical specimen reveal
