From state commodification to local reproduction of vulnerability: ethnographic insights from a Risk Zone Urban Renewal Project in Turkey.

This paper explores how vulnerability is not only defined by the state but also actively reshaped through policy implementation and lived experience. Drawing on ethnographic research in Eskişehir, Turkey, I propose an analytical distinction between the 'commodification of vulnerability'-framing risk in technoscientific and moral terms to justify intervention-and the 'reproduction of vulnerability'-capturing the emergent precarity produced by such action. Following the 2011 Van earthquakes, Turkey's central government advanced disaster prevention as a national imperative. In 2012, Law No. 6306

Social Vulnerability and Ebola Virus Disease in Rural Liberia.

The Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemic that has stricken thousands of people in the three West African countries of Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea highlights the lack of adaptive capacity in post-conflict countries. The scarcity of health services in particular renders these populations vulnerable to multiple interacting stressors including food insecurity, climate change, and the cascading effects of disease epidemics such as EVD. However, the spatial distribution of vulnerable rural populations and the individual stressors contributing to their vulnerability are unknown. We developed a So

Methodological Variations in Environmental Justice Screening Tools and Their Impact on Disadvantaged Community Designations.

Government agencies in the United States have developed environmental justice screening tools (EJSTs) and designations to promote equitable distribution of benefits from environmental policies to disadvantaged communities (DACs). However, the methodological choices embedded in these tools, including the selection, weighting, and aggregation of environmental justice indicators, vary across EJSTs, and their implications for DAC designation outcomes are poorly understood. Here we systematically compare four EJSTs at the federal and state levels and show that these tools produce substantial variat

Vulnerability in research ethics: A systematic review of policy guidelines and documents.

BACKGROUND: The history of research involving human subjects has demonstrated the importance of offering everyone an equal opportunity to participate in research, while safeguarding those who require special attention. When it comes to vulnerable individuals, this consideration is relevant. However, disagreement still exists about the meaning of vulnerability, the identification and definition of vulnerable populations, and how these concepts should be operationalised in policy documents in order to implement appropriate, preventive and respectful measures for all those subsumed within this ca…

Epidemiology and control strategies for tuberculosis in countries with the largest prison populations.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious infectious disease, and its control is considered a challenge, especially among vulnerable populations such as prisoners. The occurrence of TB in prisons is an alarming public health problem in many countries. This integrative review aims to describe the epidemiology of TB and control strategies for this disease in countries with the largest prison populations. Studies have shown that it is essential to know the prevalence of TB in prisons of each country. This is because it can serve as an indication of the need for action in prisons to reduce TB rates, includin…

Critically Exploring Vulnerability in Frail Older Adults Following a Fall.

Vulnerability is widely invoked in healthcare, bioethics, and nursing, yet it remains poorly defined because universal human susceptibility, situational exposure to harm, and clinical frailty are frequently treated as interchangeable. This conceptual ambiguity is particularly significant following a fall, when older adults may be understood predominantly through physical risk, functional decline, and the need for protection. Through an interpretative analysis drawing on nursing philosophy, feminist bioethics, phenomenological accounts of embodiment, and nursing ethics, this paper critically ex

Neurodegeneration and Homelessness: A Bidirectional Relationship Shaping Health and Vulnerability.

Neurodegeneration and homelessness are deeply interconnected. Many structural, environmental, and interpersonal conditions experienced during homelessness-for example, inconsistent healthcare, forced displacement, chronic stress, and trauma-can contribute to accelerated cognitive decline through multiple pathways. Related neurocognitive impairment can also increase vulnerability to homelessness. Deficits in memory, executive functioning, attention, and impulse control can make it difficult to maintain employment, manage finances, navigate social services, and sustain supportive relationships.

Cyclone vulnerability assessment of the central coast of Bangladesh: A comprehensive study utilizing FAHP and geospatial techniques.

The coastal areas of Bangladesh are recognized as a major South Asian center for cyclone landfall. This research develops a comprehensive tropical cyclone mapping strategy utilizing the Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (FAHP) and geospatial techniques to analyze the vulnerability distribution in the central coastal regions of Bangladesh. Eighteen spatial features, categorized into physical, social, and mitigation capacity criteria, were assessed to evaluate vulnerability. The output indicates that the southern peripheral districts- Bhola, Borgona, and Patuakhali are more vulnerable to tropic

Building a more equitable society: Psychology's role in achieving health equity.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines health disparities as "preventable differences in the burden of disease, injury, violence, or opportunities to achieve optimal health that are experienced by socially disadvantaged populations." Health disparities are often the result of persistent unjust policies and discriminatory practices that increase the risk of vulnerable populations for poor health. Environmental, social, and behavioral factors-all areas of psychology's expertise-contribute to health disparities in interacting ways. This article describes health disparities, i…

Trauma and healing in the underserved populations of homelessness and corrections: Forgiveness Therapy as an added component to intervention.

The purpose of this article is to begin applying the principles of the psychology of forgiveness to people who are without homes and people who are in prisons. A review of the literature shows trauma for both groups. When the trauma is caused by unjust treatment by others, then excessive anger can result, compromising one's psychological and physical health. We review the interventions that have been offered for those without homes and the imprisoned to examine which existing programmes address such anger. Forgiveness Therapy, although untried in these two settings, may be one beneficial appro

Improving Inclusion of Ethnically Diverse and Socioeconomically Disadvantaged Populations in Pain Research: A Comprehensive Review and Evidence-Based Recommendations.

Limited inclusion of ethnically diverse and socioeconomically disadvantaged populations in pain research undermines external validity, generalizability, and equity. This comprehensive review synthesized evidence on effective strategies to recruit and retain these populations in pain studies. We searched Medline, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and CENTRAL (12 April 2025) and included studies in which ethnically diverse and socioeconomically disadvantaged participants comprised ≥75% of the sample. Quantitative data were pooled using random-effects meta-analyses of proportions, with prespecified
