Organic micropollutants in surface water across China: Occurrence and ecological risk.

Organic pollutants in surface water present considerable risks to aquatic ecosystems and human health. However, current screening efforts in surface water tend to focus on specific areas. To address this gap, we conducted a nationwide survey to elucidate the prevalence of hydrophobic micropollutants in surface water via gas chromatography Orbitrap mass spectrometry-based suspect screening analysis. The study identified and quantified 91 organic micropollutants across 13 categories. Phthalate ester (PAE) concentrations (median: 1405.33 ng/L) in surface water significantly exceeded those of othe

Runoff and windblown vehicle spray from road surfaces, risks and measures for soil and water.

Soil and surface water along roads are exposed to pollution from motorways. The main pollutants are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), mineral oil, heavy metals and salt. These pollutants originate from vehicles (fuel, wires, leakage), wear and degradation of road surfaces and road furniture (i.e. crash barriers) and the application of de-icing salts. Runoff, vehicle spray and dry deposition disperse these contaminants into the soft shoulder (verges) of the roads and surface water to a measurable distance of about 50 up to more then 150 m from the road. Despite many monitoring programs, l

Assessing the impact of inland navigation on the faecal pollution status of large rivers: A novel integrated field approach.

The contribution of ships to the microbial faecal pollution status of water bodies is largely unknown but frequently of human health concern. No methodology for a comprehensive and target-orientated system analysis was available so far. We developed a novel approach for integrated and multistage impact evaluation. The approach includes, i) theoretical faecal pollution source profiling (PSP, i.e., size and pollution capacity estimation from municipal vs. ship sewage disposal) for impact scenario estimation and hypothesis generation, ii) high-resolution field assessment of faecal pollution level

Effects of urban catchment characteristics on combined sewer overflows.

Pollution from Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) cause diffuse environmental problems, which are still not satisfactorily addressed by current management practices. In this study, a sensitivity analysis was conducted on several CSO environmental impact indicators, with respect to parameters that characterise climate, urban catchment and the CSO structure activation threshold. The sensitivity analysis was conducted by running 10000 simulations with the Storm Water Management Model, using a simplified modelling approach. The indicators were calculated at yearly scale to evaluate overall potential

Environmental pollution and cardiovascular health. Challenges and new perspectives.

Environmental pollution is a key factor in cardiovascular disease (CVD) development. Several evidences support its impact at the pathophysiology of arteriosclerosis, highlighting the role of the "exposome", a concept that encompasses all environmental factors such as air pollution, water pollution, climate change and noise and light pollution. These factors are associated with an increased risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD), stroke, high blood pressure (HBP), heart failure (HF) and atrial fibrillation (AF). Currently, air pollution is the main environmental factor related to CVD. Components …

The impact of beaver dams on distribution of waterborne Escherichia coli and turbidity in an agricultural landscape.

Globally, freshwater environments are threatened by point source and diffuse pollution, habitat loss, and climate change. Enhancing water quality and reducing microbial pollution are priorities to realise their ecosystem services potential but challenging to achieve and require creative solutions. Beavers are receiving increasing attention as ecosystem engineers, their dams benefitting aquatic ecosystems via improved biodiversity, water quality, and flow regulation. However, effects on microbial water quality remain uncertain. Here, we investigated the influence of engineering by Eurasian beav

A chemometric approach to the evaluation of atmospheric and fluvial pollutant inputs in aquatic systems: the Guadalquivir River estuary as a case study.

To establish the quality of waters it is necessary to identify both point and non-point pollution sources. In this work, we propose the combination of clean analytical methodologies and chemometric tools to study discrete and diffuse pollution caused in a river by tributaries and precipitations, respectively. During a two-year period, water samples were taken in the Guadalquivir river (selected as a case study) and its main tributaries before and after precipitations. Samples were characterized by analysing nutrients, pH, dissolved oxygen, total and volatile suspended solids, carbon species, a

Simulation of solute transport across low-permeability barrier walls.

Low-permeability, non-reactive barrier walls are often used to contain contaminants in an aquifer. Rates of solute transport through such barriers are typically many orders of magnitude slower than rates through the aquifer. Nevertheless, the success of remedial actions may be sensitive to these low rates of transport. Two numerical simulation methods for representing low-permeability barriers in a finite-difference groundwater-flow and transport model were tested. In the first method, the hydraulic properties of the barrier were represented directly on grid cells and in the second method, the

[Spatial and Temporal Variation Characterization and Variability of Microplastics in Water-borne River and Reservoir].

Water-source rivers and reservoirs are crucial sources of drinking water for numerous urban and rural areas. In depth exploration of the occurrence characteristics and risk differences of microplastics (MPs) in these two types of water environments is of great significance for formulating targeted pollution control strategies for MPs. This study selected the Dongjiang River and Xinfengjiang Reservoir, important drinking water sources in Guangdong Province, China, as the research objects. Through a systematic investigation of the abundance, composition, and diversity of MPs in their surface wat

Thiadiazol ligand-based laccase-like nanozymes with a high Cu+ ratio for efficient removal of tetracyclines through polymerization.

A promising water treatment technology involves inducing the polymerization of organic pollutants to form corresponding polymers, enabling rapid, efficient, and low CO2 emission removal of these pollutants. However, there is currently limited research on utilizing polymerization treatment technology for removing tetracyclines from water. In this study, we synthesized a laccase-mimic nanozyme (Cu-ATZ) with a high Cu+ ratio using 2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole as a ligand inspired by natural laccase. The Cu-ATZ exhibited enhanced resistance to more severe application conditions and improved stability

Nanoplastic interference at the air-water interface modulate the fate and toxic persistence of BHT and BHTQ: A multi-scale computational study.

The pervasive presence of nanoplastics at the air-water interface positions them as potential modulators of other coexisting emerging pollutants, yet their regulatory roles in interfacial adsorption and oxidation are extremely limited. Here, using multi-scale theoretical simulations, we investigated the interfacial behaviors of polyethylene (PE)/polyvinyl chloride (PVC) nanoplastic clusters, their impact on the adsorption and distribution of butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and 2,6-di-tert-butyl-1,4-benzoquinone (BHTQ), and the •OH-mediated oxidation of BHTQ across five systems (air, aqueous, ai

Distribution of mercury and methylmercury in ice-water-sediments in lakes during the freezing period under the influence of ice cover.

The presence of lake ice cover alters the subglacial water environment, thereby influencing the migration and transformation of mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) within the ice-water-sediment media of lakes. This study investigated the occurrence characteristics of mercury and methylmercury in various environmental compartments within lakes located at high latitudes in cold regions during the freezing period. To this end, Wuliangsuhai Lake, the largest freshwater lake situated at 40°N in China, was selected as the study site. The contents of mercury and methylmercury in lake ice were deter

From poison ponds to pleasure spots.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Area had 562 lakes at one time, but only 162 now remain. These are polluted to various degrees and pose environmental and health hazards. The Hussain Sagar Lake provided water for irrigation and drinking until 1930 and supported aquatic life till 1976. It is now contaminated by organic chemicals discharged by many industrial estates in its basin. An estimated 28,190 cmum of industrial effluents and domestic sewage are let into it daily. Phenols, benzenes, cyanides, and toxic metals make it poisonous. The ground water around the lake is also polluted. The polluted lak

Alternative designs for petroleum product storage tanks for groundwater protection.

In developing countries, there are numerous occurrences of petroleum product spillage in groundwater. The current practice of burying storage tanks beneath the surface without adequate safety devices facilitates this phenomenon. Underground tanks rust and leak, and spilled petroleum products migrate downward. The movement of the oil in the soil depends on its viscosity and quantity, the permeability of the soil/rock, and the presence of fractures within the rock. The oil spreads laterally in the form of a thin pancake due to its lower specific gravity, and soluble components dissolve in water.
