We are presenting a quantitative determination of the effect of granulocytes, monocytes and lymphocytes on the course of infection during antibiotic treatment. The animal model was a short-term infection of the thigh muscle in normal or irradiated mice. Two kinds of antibiotics were used: tobramycin for Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections and ampicillin for Escherichia coli infections. The number of granulocytes was changed by irradiating the mice before they were infected. Idiopathic CD4+ lymphocytopenia (ICL) is the depletion of CD4+ lymphocytes to <300 cells/mm3 without human immunodeficiency virus infection or other causes of lymphocytopenia. Small-animal imaging with positron emission tomography (PET) has become a valuable tool for evaluating preclinical models of breast cancer and other diseases. In this review, we examine a number of issues related to preclinical imaging studies with PET, using transgenic models of ductal carcinoma in situ and metastasis as specific examples. INTRODUCTION: (131)I-meta iodobenzylguanidine ((131)I-mIBG) therapy is established palliation for relapsed neuroblastoma. The topoisomerase-1 inhibitor, topotecan, has direct activity against neuroblastoma and acts as a radiation sensitiser. These 2 treatments are synergistic in laboratory studies. Theoretically, the benefit of (131)I-mIBG treatment could be enhanced by dose escalation and combination with topotecan. Haematological support would be necessary to overcome the myelosuppression, which is the dose-limiting toxicity.

BALB/c mice inoculated intranasally with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) were studied in a whole-body plethysmograph to determine if signs of respiratory illness similar to those observed in human infants could be detected.
