How Does Yoga Work on Pain Dimensions? An Integrated Perspective in 2 Individuals With Fibromyalgia.

CONTEXT: The effectiveness of yoga has been studied in fibromyalgia (FM) using improvement in its 5 key dimensions-pain, quality of life, sleep, depression, and disability-as outcome measures. Studies have demonstrated an improvement in the psychosocial dimensions of pain after yoga practice, but these findings failed to reach statistical significance. Although studies have shown the efficacy of yoga in the modulation of pain, no study has yet investigated how it acts on each dimension of pain. OBJECTIVE: The study intended to investigate the dimensions of pain-sensory, evaluative, and/or aff…

Cardiovascular and respiratory effect of yogic slow breathing in the yoga beginner: what is the best approach?

Slow breathing increases cardiac-vagal baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), improves oxygen saturation, lowers blood pressure, and reduces anxiety. Within the yoga tradition slow breathing is often paired with a contraction of the glottis muscles. This resistance breath "ujjayi" is performed at various rates and ratios of inspiration/expiration. To test whether ujjayi had additional positive effects to slow breathing, we compared BRS and ventilatory control under different breathing patterns (equal/unequal inspiration/expiration at 6 breath/min, with/without ujjayi), in 17 yoga-naive young healthy pa…

Yoga-based meditation improves self-regulation and well-being in medical students: a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Self-regulation enables students to effectively apply their metacognitive abilities to reach academic objectives and enhance their well-being, which is essential in academic high-pressure situations such as medical education. However, many medical students have difficulty managing their cognitive and emotional responses to continued academic pressure and the clinical demands placed upon them. Thus, it is important to identify methods that may support the self-regulatory abilities of medical students. METHODS: This study assessed whether participation in a yoga-based meditation p…

Whole-Body Coordination and Spinopelvic Alignment During Yoga Standing Maneuvers: Comparing Practitioners With Non-Practitioners.

Understanding how humans coordinate multiple joints and body segments during complex whole-body tasks is essential for designing movement-based interventions. Yoga-inspired standing maneuvers, which combine upper-body alignment with lunging or stepping, provide a structured yet challenging experimental testbed. However, few studies have integrated spatiotemporal coordination and compensation strategies across different proficiency levels, limiting their adoption in rehabilitation and robotic applications. In this study, we analyzed whole-body kinematics during yoga standing maneuvers performed…

Yoga as salutogenic health promotion across displacement contexts: a culturally responsive public mental health synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Global displacement is a major public mental health concern shaped by conflict, protracted geopolitical instability, disrupted social worlds, and structural inequities. Yoga is increasingly discussed within health promotion as a potentially accessible and adaptable practice. However, much of the existing literature has prioritized symptom-based outcomes and has rarely been situated within displacement-informed public mental health frameworks attentive to structural vulnerability, cultural heterogeneity, and ethical implementation conditions. METHODS: This study undertakes a struct…
