OBJECTIVES: Fat-soluble vitamins are measured to identify deficiencies that may lead to rickets, osteomalacia, night blindness, and reversible motor and sensory neuropathies. We present a rapid liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method that simultaneously measures 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25[OH]D3), epi-25(OH)D3, 25(OH)D2, vitamin A, α-tocopherol, and γ-tocopherol.

BACKGROUND: Propofol (2,6-diisopropylphenol) is an anesthetic drug with antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties, documented both in vitro and in experimental models of ischemia-reperfusion injury and septic shock. These properties have been related to the similarity of its chemical structure to that of endogenous tocopherols, which are phenol-containing radical scavengers. This study evaluated the effects of propofol on alpha- and gamma-tocopherol (alpha- and gamma-T) levels and on selected markers of oxidant-antioxidant and inflammatory status in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

In humans and mice, offspring of allergic mothers are predisposed to development of allergy. In mice, allergic mothers have elevated β-glucosylceramides (βGlcCers) that are transported to the fetus via the placenta and to offspring via milk. The elevated βGlcCers increase the number of fetal liver CD11c+CD11b+ dendritic cells (DCs) and offspring allergen-induced lung eosinophilia.
