Sensory pulpal nerve fibres and trigeminal ganglion neurons express IL-1RI: a potential mechanism for development of inflammatory hyperalgesia.

AIM: To localize interleukin-1 receptor type I (IL-1RI) in rat dental pulp and trigeminal ganglion (TG) and to test the hypothesis that pulpal inflammation increases neuronal expression of IL-1RI. METHODOLOGY: Female Wistar rats were subjected to unilateral pulp exposures in the maxillary and mandibular first molars, whereas the contralateral jaws served as untreated controls. Seven days later the animals were transcardiacally perfused and the jaws and the TGs were removed and prepared for immunohistochemistry. Immunoreactivity for IL-1RI was examined alone (DAB) and together with calcitonin

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura: the masquerader.

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a life-threatening disorder with a mortality rate of up to 90% if left untreated, and is characterized by microvascular thrombi, mainly in small arteries and capillaries, thrombocytopenia, hemolysis, and neurological abnormalities. Malignant hypertension (HTN) is a clinical syndrome characterized by severe hypertension associated with end-organ damage; including encephalopathy, renal dysfunction, and retinal hemorrhage due to platelet aggregation in the microcirculation leading to thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA). These are similar to TTP. Malignant

Role of tissue factor in a mouse model of thrombotic microangiopathy induced by antiphospholipid antibodies.

Using different mouse monoclonal and human antiphospholipid (aPL) antibodies, we developed a new animal model of renal injury that shares many features with thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA). We found that more than 1 mechanism/signaling pathway is involved in glomerular injury induced by aPL antibodies in this model. Both complement-dependent and complement-independent pathways were identified that lead to glomerular endothelial cell damage and renal function impairment. We also found that C5a-C5aR interaction is a crucial step for the activation of the coagulation cascade and glomerular injur

Vascular connections of the lateral wall of the sinus: surgical effect in sinus augmentation.

PURPOSE: There are several vascular vessels that supply the maxillary sinus, such as the posterior superior alveolar artery, the anterior superior alveolar artery, and the infraorbital artery (IOA). These vessels have to be taken into consideration during a sinus augmentation because of the potential risk of bleeding during the procedure. The objective of this investigation was to study variations in maxillary sinus artery connections with the potential surgical effect during a sinus floor elevation by the lateral wall. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The first part of the study was done in 32 anatomi

Eight weeks of high-intensity interval training is insufficient to prevent sitting-induced endothelial dysfunction and microvascular impairment.

Prolonged sitting disrupts lower-limb endothelial and microvascular function, likely via reduced shear stress and blunted microvascular reactivity. We examined whether Tabata-style high-intensity interval training (HIIT) mitigates this sitting-induced vascular dysfunction. Twenty-two healthy young adults (age 20.3 ± 0.8 years) were randomly assigned to a control group (n = 11) or a training group (n = 11); each group comprised seven men and four women. Participants completed 8 weeks of HIIT (4 sessions/week) using a cycle ergometer and bodyweight exercises. Before and after the intervention, p

Association of the C-reactive protein-triglyceride glucose index with microvascular obstruction and long-term prognosis in patients with acute myocardial infarction: a CMR-based study.

BACKGROUND: The clinical benefits of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) are frequently compromised by the occurrence of microvascular obstruction (MVO). The C-reactive protein-triglyceride glucose index (CTI) is a novel biomarker integrating systemic inflammation and insulin resistance. We aimed to evaluate the association between CTI and MVO, as well as its prognostic value for long-term outcomes in AMI patients. METHODS: This study included patients with AMI who underwent successful primary PCI and subsequent cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). MVO

Placental ferroptosis in preeclampsia: An integrative and comprehensive review.

Ferroptosis, a regulated form of iron-dependent cell death driven by lipid peroxidation, has recently gained attention as a potential contributor to the pathophysiology of preeclampsia, a major cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. This review synthesizes current evidence linking ferroptosis to placental dysfunction and explores its relevance to the pathogenesis of preeclampsia. We examine how disrupted iron metabolism, oxidative stress, and impaired antioxidant defenses create a permissive environment for ferroptotic damage in the syncytiotrophoblast. Key biochemical pathwa

Quantitative analysis of macular and peripapillary microvasculature in non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy is a major cause of optic nerve dysfunction in older adults. Understanding its structural and microvascular consequences is essential for identifying disease susceptibility and guiding clinical monitoring. BACKGROUND: Non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy results from impaired perfusion of the optic nerve head, leading to permanent structural and vascular injury. Although clinically affected eyes show marked damage, fellow eyes may also demonstrate anatomical crowding and reduced vascular supply. METHODS: This

MRI-Based Topology Deep Learning Model for Noninvasive Prediction of Microvascular Invasion and Assisting Prognostic Stratification in HCC.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Microvascular invasion (MVI) is associated with poor prognosis in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Topology may improve the predictive performance and interpretability of deep learning (DL). We aimed to develop and externally validate an MRI-based topology DL model for preoperative prediction of MVI. METHODS: This dual-centre retrospective study included consecutive surgically treated HCC patients from two tertiary care hospitals. Automatic liver and tumour segmentations were performed with DL methods. A pure convolutional neural network (CNN) model, a topology-CNN (TopoCNN)

The underdiagnosed risk of Coronary microvascular dysfunction in post CABG/angioplasty patients a call for myocardial perfusion mapping of blood flow dynamics.

Angioplasty and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) are common interventions for the management of coronary artery disease aiming to address atherosclerotic plaques in the epicardial coronary arteries. However, many patients experience recurrent angina and other complications such as low cardiac output and even mortality due to other undiagnosed pathologies. Coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD), which causes impaired blood flow in the microvascular network is a critically overlooked factor in this regard. Such microvascular dysfunction occurs due to the endothelial abnormalities leading

Endothelial IGF- 1R deficiency disrupts microvascular homeostasis, impairing skeletal muscle perfusion and endurance: implications for age-related sarcopenia.

Aging is associated with a progressive decline in circulating insulin-like growth factor- 1 (IGF- 1) levels in humans, which has been implicated in the pathogenesis of sarcopenia. IGF- 1 is an anabolic hormone that plays a dual role in maintaining skeletal muscle health, acting both directly on muscle fibers to promote growth and indirectly by supporting the vascular network that sustains muscle perfusion. However, the microvascular consequences of IGF- 1 deficiency in aging muscle remain poorly understood. To elucidate how impaired IGF- 1 input affects skeletal muscle vasculature, we examined

Effect of Dietary Nitrate Intake on Fatigue Resistance Following Ischemia-Induced Microvascular Dysfunction in Males and Females.

BACKGROUND: Skeletal muscle fatigue reflects the interaction of metabolic demand, contractile efficiency, and oxygen delivery, processes highly dependent on microvascular function. Prolonged ischemia induces transient microvascular dysfunction that can impair fatigue resistance. Dietary nitrate, abundant in beetroot juice, enhances nitric oxide bioavailability and vascular function, but whether it mitigates ischemia-induced decrements in microvascular reactivity and fatigue resistance remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether a single oral dose of nitrate-rich beetroot juice (NR-BJ) p

Amyloid beta-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and endothelial permeability in cerebral microvascular endothelial cells: The protective role of dexmedetomidine.

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a common complication in patients who undergo anesthesia in different types of surgeries. Emerging evidence implicates elevated beta-amyloid (Aβ) in the pathogenesis of POCD. Meanwhile, Dexmedetomidine (DEX) has recently shown promise in reducing POCD incidence. This study aimed to elucidate the role of Aβ in inducing endothelial permeability in cerebral microvascular endothelial cells and the underlying mechanisms and testing the effects of DEX. We demonstrated that Aβ1-42, the prevalent Aβ form related to POCD, is cytotoxic to HBMECs, increasing
