Skeletal and dental asymmetries in Class II subdivision malocclusions using cone-beam computed tomography.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to compare the degrees of skeletal and dental asymmetry between subjects with Class II subdivision malocclusions and subjects with normal occlusions by using cone-beam computed tomography. METHODS: Thirty subjects with Angle Class II subdivision malocclusions (mean age, 13.99 years) and 30 subjects with normal occlusions (mean age, 14.32 years) were assessed with 3-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography scans. Independent t tests were used to compare orthogonal, linear, and angular measurements between sides and between groups. RESULTS: Total

Three-dimensional analysis of pharyngeal airway in preadolescent children with different anteroposterior skeletal patterns.

INTRODUCTION: In growing patients with skeletal discrepancies, early diagnosis, evidence-based explanations of etiology, and assessment of functional factors can be vital for the restoration of normal craniofacial growth and the stability of the treatment results. The aims of our study were to compare the 3-dimensional pharyngeal airway volumes in healthy children with a retrognathic mandible and those with normal craniofacial growth, and to investigate possible significant relationships and correlations among the studied cephalometric variables and the airway morphology in these children. Midfacial trauma and facial growth: a longitudinal case study of monozygotic twins.

The purpose of this article is to present a long-term follow-up of the growth of the face and the nasomaxillary complex in a pair of identical twins, one of whom had suffered severe midfacial trauma at age 2 years. Growth of the face and the nasomaxillary complex was longitudinally assessed and compared by means of facial photographs and cephalometric x-rays. Twin A suffered Le Fort II and III fractures with an associated frontal bone injury in early childhood and subsequently developed significant midface hypoplasia; twin B had no trauma and normal facial growth and development. Facial profil

Semilongitudinal cephalometric study of craniofacial growth in untreated Class III malocclusion.

INTRODUCTION: Class III growth in white subjects is poorly characterized because of the low prevalence of the disharmony and the clinical tendency to treat this condition early. The purpose of this study was to investigate craniofacial growth changes by using longitudinal cephalometric records of white subjects with untreated Class III malocclusions to provide comparison data for studies of Class III treatment outcomes. METHODS: Longitudinal records of 103 subjects were analyzed. Annual incremental growth changes in craniofacial variables from early childhood to late adolescence were examined

A nonradiographic approach to detect Class III skeletal discrepancies.

INTRODUCTION: Because of the hereditary nature of Class III malocclusion, relatives of affected subjects often ask for a consultation. To estimate the degree of skeletal manifestation without exposing them to radiation, an alternative to lateral cephalograms would be valuable for preliminary diagnosis. Thus, we aimed to assess the validity of profile photographs to detect skeletal Class III discrepancy. METHODS: Profile photographs and lateral cephalograms were available from 42 young white men, 29 with Class III malocclusion and 13 with Class I. A computer-based analysis was performed includ

Nonextraction treatment of a skeletal Class III malocclusion.

This case report describes the nonsurgical, nonextraction therapy of a 16-year-old boy with a skeletal Class III malocclusion, a prognathic mandible, and a retrusive maxilla. He was initially classified as needing orthognathic surgery, but he and his parents wanted to avoid that. The Class III malocclusion was corrected with a rapid palatal expander and a maxillary protraction mask followed by nonextraction orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances, combined with short Class III and vertical elastics in the anterior area. The height of the maxillary alveolar process and the vertical face hei

Orthodontic distalization with rigid plate fixation for anchorage after bone grafting and maxillary sinus lifting.

A 68-year-old woman was treated with an autogenous particulated bone graft from the anterior part of the mandible to elevate the right maxillary sinus floor, which was next to the alveolar ridge of an edentulous area, to facilitate dental implant placement. A rigid plate for anchorage was placed into the zygomatic bone. The maxillary right canine and the premolars were moved distally 6 months after the implant was placed and osteointegration of the bone graft had occurred. The Class II relationship was corrected. After tooth movement, the patient underwent multislice computed tomography to det

Orthognathic treatment and temporomandibular disorders: a systematic review. Part 1. A new quality-assessment technique and analysis of study characteristics and classifications.

INTRODUCTION: Orthognathic treatment is undertaken to correct jaw discrepancies and involves a combination of orthodontics and surgery. The effects of orthodontic treatment on temporomandibular disorders (TMD) have been widely debated in the literature, but fewer studies focus on the effects of orthognathic treatment on TMD. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted to (1) determine the percentage of orthognathic patients with signs or symptoms of TMD, (2) establish the range of signs or symptoms, and (3) examine studies that followed patients longitudinally through treatment to determine th

Orthognathic treatment and temporomandibular disorders: a systematic review. Part 2. Signs and symptoms and meta-analyses.

INTRODUCTION: There have been conflicting viewpoints in the literature regarding the effects of orthognathic treatment on temporomandibular disorders (TMD). A systematic review was conducted to determine the percentage of orthognathic patients with TMD, establish the range of signs and symptoms, and follow patients longitudinally through treatment for any changes in signs and symptoms. METHODS: Part 1 of this 2-part article described the methodology of this review, with a narrative analysis of the study characteristics and the TMD classification methods. Part 2 describes the percentage of pat
