BACKGROUND: The increasing demand for rotator cuff (RC) repair patients to return to work as soon as they are physically able has led to exploration of when this is feasible. Current guidelines from our orthopedic surgery clinic recommend a return to work at 9 weeks postoperation. To more fully define capacity to return to work, the current study was conducted using a unique series of quantitative tools. To date, no study has combined 3-dimensional (3D) motion analysis with electromyography (EMG) assessment during activities of daily living (ADLs), including desk tasks, and commonly prescribed

Shoulder subluxation is an extremely common problem confronting the sports medicine physician and may present in a variety of ways, with the patient complaining of pain of a sense of instability. In throwing spots, tendinitis secondary to impingement is common, but it may also be secondary to instability as a result of traction or compression of the rotator cuff. In addition, subluxation may develop initially, then progress to dislocation, or the converse may occur. However, some patients may have subluxation over an extended period of time. The physician must consider the entity and take a ca

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether routinely assessed MRI features can reliably estimate the timing of rotator cuff tears (RCTs) and to assess the performance of an MRI-based logistic regression model in distinguishing recent from chronic tears.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this retrospective single-center study, 255 patients with clinically and MRI-confirmed RCT following shoulder trauma underwent MRI between 2011 and 2024. Tears were classified as acute (< 6 weeks), subacute (6-12 weeks), or chronic (> 12 weeks) based on the reported date of trauma; acute and subacute tears were grouped as "recent".

INTRODUCTION: Isolated coracoid process fracture of scapula is a rare. Usually, it happens along with the rotator cuff tear, dislocation of acromioclavicular joint, or glenohumeral joint. Displaced fracture will cause impairment of upper limb movement. Since there are very low numbers of cases reported so far, the treatment is still controversial.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 42-year-old male laborer with motor vehicle accident, following which he had pain and restricted movements on his left shoulder. On examination, Glasgow Coma Scale 15/15 and left shoulder had swelling and tendernes

Fully-automated segmentation of pathological shoulder muscles in patients with musculo-skeletal diseases is a challenging task due to the huge variability in muscle shape, size, location, texture and injury. A reliable automatic segmentation method from magnetic resonance images could greatly help clinicians to diagnose pathologies, plan therapeutic interventions and predict interventional outcomes while eliminating time consuming manual segmentation. The purpose of this work is three-fold. First, we investigate the feasibility of automatic pathological shoulder muscle segmentation using deep

HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of the present study was described as the arthroscopically assisted procedure that uses a synthetic conoid ligament reconstruction using Zip Tight (Zimmer biomet, Warsaw, USA) and fracture-site fixation with K-wire. Our hypothesis was that this technique provided a satisfactory functional outcome with minimum complication.
METHODS: 45 patients underwent operation to treat fractures of the distal clavicle between January 2014 and May 2017. The inclusion criteria were as follows: (1) there is an episode of trauma and it is the first fracture (2) distal clavicle fracture

PURPOSE: To compare a curved drill guide with a straight guide for suture anchor placement into the posterosuperior glenoid from an anterolateral portal with respect to glenoid perforation, drill contact with the suprascapular nerve, and maximum load.
METHODS: Ten bilateral pairs of fresh human cadaveric shoulders were randomized to the curved technique on 1 side and the straight technique on the contralateral side. An anterolateral trans-rotator cuff portal was used for placement of anchors at the posterior (11 o'clock right shoulder) and far posterior (10 o'clock right shoulder) positions o

The WHO reports that one of the major chronic conditions affecting the elderly worldwide is musculoskeletal disorders that are associated with long-term pain and disability. Considering the healthcare needs of the elderly (i.e. comprehensive, accessible, efficient) and the advantages of ultrasound (US) use (patient-friendly, convenient, cost-effective, and does not require exposure to radiation or magnetic fields), there seems to be a 'gap' in the actual clinical practice. In this paper, we aimed to highlight the potential value of US imaging in the management of the elderly with a wide spectr

BACKGROUND: Tenotomy and tenodesis are common treatments for lesions in the long head of biceps tendon (LHBT); however, which treatment is superior is still controversial. This study compared the outcomes of tenotomy with outcomes of tenodesis for treatment of LHBT lesions with rotator cuff tears.
METHODS: The study enrolled 128 patients with LHBT lesions and small- to medium-sized rotator cuff tear. Arthroscopic LHBT tenotomy was done in 56 patients (group I), and LHBT tenodesis was done for 72 patients (group II) with rotator cuff repair. American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Score, simple s

BACKGROUND: Shoulder dislocation is a common injury, particularly in the younger population. Common long-term sequelae include pain, recurrence, and shoulder arthritis. Immediate and correct diagnosis following shoulder dislocation is key to achieving optimum outcomes. Although magnetic resonance arthrography (MRA) is frequently used for diagnosing shoulder instabilities, arthroscopy is still considered the gold standard.
PURPOSE: This study aims to compare the diagnostic value of arthroscopy and MRA of the shoulder joint.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study estimates the sensiti

OBJECTIVE: Musicians often end their musical career due to musculoskeletal injury. A leading source of shoulder pain in upper string musicians is rotator cuff disease (RCD). Multiple factors contribute to its development. Compressive overload of the soft tissues of the subacromial space resulting from a decrease in the width of the subacromial space has been identified as an extrinsic factor contributing to RCD development. The purpose of this study was to characterize the width of the subacromial space by measuring acromial-humeral distance (AHD) of upper string musicians, while their arms ar

The Latarjet procedure is a complex and difficult operation when performed both with an open approach and arthroscopically. The difficulties come from the fact that it is a combined intra- and extra-articular procedure, and that working close to the brachial plexus may be frightening for surgeons. Because of the high complication and reoperation rates reported in the literature, this procedure is, at the moment, rejected by a large part of the orthopaedic community, specifically in North America. The Chinese experience shows, after the European one, that arthroscopic Latarjet is an efficient a

BACKGROUND: Although reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) with concomitant latissimus dorsi transfer (LDT) has been shown to effectively treat external rotation (ER) deficits, there are limited data regarding its outcomes with modern implants and its impact on activities of daily living (ADLs) requiring ER. The purpose of this study was to assess the mid-term clinical and radiographic outcomes of rTSA with concomitant isolated LDT in patients with an ER lag sign and posterior rotator cuff deficiency.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study with prospective follow-up included consecutiv

BACKGROUND: Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) has become a frequently used and established treatment for patients with cuff tear arthropathy, increasingly also for patients with fracture sequelae (FS), failed rotator cuff reconstruction and omarthrosis with cuff insufficiency. Since 2007 new generation prostheses, for example Delta Xtend (Depuy, Warsaw, USA), have been used, but few mid-term results have been published.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to report on the outcome after RSA after a mean follow-up of 68 months (range 63-75), to verify the already published, encouraging early

Interscalene block (ISB) impairs ipsilateral lung function and generally is not used for patients with respiratory insufficiency. We present a 49-year-old man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease scheduled for shoulder surgery. He was given a regional technique with an ISB (short-acting local anesthetic to minimize duration of diaphragmatic dysfunction) and suprascapular and axillary nerves blocks (long-acting local anesthetic). He was supported with noninvasive ventilation during the time of hemidiaphragmatic paralysis as documented by serial ultrasound examination. A discussion about I
