BACKGROUND/AIM: Preoperative pathological diagnosis of appendiceal tumors is difficult due to their anatomical nature. Although lymph node metastasis is rare in low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMN), there is a risk of a positive surgical margin by appendectomy. Partial cecum resection is considered an option to obtain negative resection margins for LAMN; however, the benefits of this procedure via a laparoscopic approach remain unclear.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients who underwent laparoscopy-assisted partial cecum resection (Lap-Ce) or ileocecum resecti…

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to identify risk factors associated with acute complicated appendicitis (CA) in children aged three years or younger, providing a theoretical foundation for the management and treatment of acute appendicitis (AA).
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 135 pediatric patients with AA, admitted to the Department of General Surgery at Anhui Children's Hospital between December 2020 and December 2023, who underwent successful surgical treatment. Based on the intraoperative and postoperative pathological findings, patients were categorized into two g

A 71-year-old woman was found to have submucosal tumor-like lesion on colonoscopy (CS) before gastric surgery, and computed tomography (CT) showed a 12-mm structure at the base of the appendix. The lesion could not be clearly detected on CT nine months later, but it had enlarged again on CT one year later; therefore, CS and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) were performed. The lesion was determined to be cystic with viscous contents, and laparoscopic appendicectomy was performed. This is the first report of low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) diagnosed by a histopathologic examination of

BACKGROUND: Right iliac fossa (RIF) pain is a common indication for laparoscopy to diagnose and treat appendicitis. When a macroscopically normal appendix is found, there is no standard consensus regarding excision. Some surgeons remove the appendix due to the risk of microscopic inflammation and to avoid a future, repeat laparoscopy for possible appendicitis. Alternatively, others leave the appendix in situ to avoid morbidity from a potentially unnecessary procedure. We aimed to evaluate the outcomes of patients with macroscopically normal appendices left in situ.
METHODS: All emergency lapa

INTRODUCTION: Acute appendicitis is one of the most common surgical emergencies; however, optimal diagnosis and treatment of acute appendicitis remains challenging. We used the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown policy as a natural experiment to explore potential overdiagnosis and overtreatment of acute appendicitis in Thailand. The aim of this study was to estimate the potential overdiagnosis and overtreatment of acute appendicitis in Thailand by examining service utilization before, during, and after the COVID-19 lockdown policy.
METHODS: A secondary data analysis of patients admi

Background - In December 2019 following an outbreak of Novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in Wuhan, China, it spread rapidly overwhelming the healthcare systems globally. With little knowledge of COVID-19 virus, very few published reports on surgical outcomes; hospitals stopped elective surgery, whilst emergency surgery was offered only after exhausting all conservative treatment modalities. This study presents our experience of outcomes of emergency appendectomies performed during the pandemic. Methods - Prospectively we collected data on 132 patients in peak pandemic period from 1st Marc

BACKGROUND: Unusual clinical presentation of acute appendicitis in preschool children leads to misdiagnosis and complications. We aimed to analyze the influence of age on clinical presentation, laboratory findings and complications in preschool children with acute appendicitis.
METHODS: From January 2012 until December 2017, 29 children younger than 6 years of age (median 50 months) with acute appendicitis were enrolled in this retrospective study. Patients were grouped according to their age: group 1: < 48 months (n = 13); group 2: > 48 months (n = 16), their clinical data, laboratory result

BACKGROUND: There is a limited and conflicting evidence about the most appropriate method for appendiceal stump closure during laparoscopic appendectomy (LA). We aimed to compare endoloop (EL) versus endostapler (ES) for stump closure during LA for complicated perforated appendicitis in children.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 708 patients (463 boys and 245 girls with an average age of 9.8 years) who underwent LA for complicated appendicitis in 5 international centers of Pediatric Surgery over a 5-years period (January 2011-December 2016). OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to compare the results of the Alvarado and Pediatric Appendicitis Score (PAS) scoring systems and to establish which one is more reliable in setting the diagnosis of acute appendicitis in children.
METHODS: All children operated on because of acute appendicitis from October 2011 to May 2013 were enrolled in this prospective study. Both clinical scoring systems have been compared over the same patients, and cutoff values were determined by the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis.
RESULTS: A total of 311 patients were included in the study

A 62-year-old man presented via the emergency department with a 1-week history of back pain, on a background of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and rectal carcinoma for which he had undergone abdominoperineal resection, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. He exhibited signs of sepsis, midline lumbar spine tenderness and reduced hip flexion. CT of the abdomen and pelvis showed a presacral collection contiguous with the tip of the appendix, and MRI lumbar spine revealed abscess invation into the epidural space extending to T9. He underwent a laparotomy with washout of the presacral abscess an

Pyogenic liver abscess [PLA] is a rare and life-threatening disease in children. Appendicitis was the leading source of PLA in the pre-antibiotic era, but it essentially has been eliminated in recent times. Most patients with persistent fever after exploratory laparatomy for perforated appendicitis are often found to have residual abdominal collection. We report a 12-year old girl with PLA after laparotomy for perforated appendix. She developed persistent fever and respiratory distress post operatively. Physicians had an impression of pneumonia but abdominal ultrasound showed cystic mass with

A 10-yr-old boy who presented with vomiting and abdominal pain 12 days after an uneventful renal transplant had no identifiable transplant-related cause for these symptoms. Four days later a perforated appendix was diagnosed. His case illustrates that common abdominal pathologies may present differently in immunosuppressed, transplanted patients, causing diagnostic delay.

INTRODUCTION: Acute appendicitis of amebic origin is considered a rare cause of acute appendicitis.
METHODS: The clinical notes for 4093 patients over the age of 16 who had undergone appendectomy were reviewed. Particular attention was paid to the histopathologic results, separating out those cases where trophozoites were seen in the appendix. These cases were considered to be of amebic origin.
RESULTS: A total of 93 cases reported lesions suggestive of amebiasis (2.3%). This study analyzed 86 of these cases. Comparing the cases in this study against the cases of patients with acute appendic…
