UNLABELLED: Neridronate therapy in adult patients with OI significantly increases the cross-sectional area of the proximal radius. This observation may provide an additional explanation for the antifracture efficacy of bisphosphonates.
INTRODUCTION: Bisphosphonate therapy decreases by 70-90% the fracture risk in patients with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). This decrease is somewhat greater than that expected from the BMD changes, supporting the hypothesis that bisphosphonate therapy is associated with structural changes, not detectable by BMD measurements.

OBJECTIVE: Parathyroid carcinoma is a rare cause of primary hyperparathyroidism. Surgery is the primary treatment in recurrent or metastatic disease. Radiotherapy has been used as an adjuvant to control subclinical local disease but is otherwise considered ineffective.
DESIGN: We report on a patient with parathyroid carcinoma with hypercalcaemia and pulmonary metastases, treated with pamidronate and radiotherapy and later with surgery.
METHODS: The treatment was evaluated using serial analysis of serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) and calcium, clinical evaluation and chest radiographs.

We present a diagnostically challenging case of hypercalcemia in a 50-year-old Japanese woman with chronic renal failure due to chronic interstitial nephritis. She had a history of a radical mastectomy for breast cancer at the age of 30. Despite her chronic renal failure, serum levels of calcium and alkaline phosphatase were abnormally high, and levels of intact parathyroid hormone and of parathyroid hormone-related protein were undetectable on repeated assays. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether pamidronate disodium can reduce vitamin D3-induced hypercalcemia in dogs and whether combination treatment with calcitonin is more effective than treatment with pamidronate alone.
ANIMALS: 20 clinically normal male Beagles.
PROCEDURE: All dogs were given 8 mg of cholecalciferol (CCF)/kg of body weight once orally, then were assigned randomly to 4 groups of 5 dogs each. Dogs were given 0.9% NaCl solution IV (group 1), calcitonin SC and 0.9% NaCl solution IV (group 2), pamidronate and 0.9% NaCl solution IV (group 3), or a combination of all 3 agents (group 4).

High-dose treatment of more than three months' duration reduces bone mass, regardless of the patient's age, sex, or race. Because bone loss is most severe during the first six to 12 months of treatment, prophylaxis to preserve bone--with calcium, vitamin D, a bisphosphonate, and exercise--should begin as soon as the clinical situation permits rather than after the disease has been brought under control.

In a prospective study of 22 patients (24 hips) with Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD) the findings at conventional radiography, arthrography, bone scintigraphy and MR imaging, obtained at the time of diagnosis, were compared. MR was superior to conventional radiography and bone scintigraphy in the detection of the extent of involvement in the femoral head. Presenting radiographs of 30 children with spondylolisthesis and spondylolysis were reviewed.
