Pregabalin, as the active ingredient of various medications, is used in humans to treat generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), epilepsy, fibromyalgia, and neuropathic pain. In animals, pregabalin is used as an anesthetic. The aim of the present study was to test the effect of pregabalin on the developmental parameters of Sarcophaga argyrostoma (Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830) (Diptera: Sarcophagidae), a fly used in forensic entomology. A culture of S. argyrostoma larvae was conducted on mouse carcasses. Two doses of the active substance were used in the experiment: 100 mg/kg (dose 1) and 300 mg/kg (dose

Juvenile hormone (JH) and nutrients are both essential for insect ovarian development. However, the molecular mechanisms of synergistic JH-nutrient regulation in ovarian development remain unclear. Here, trehalase 1 (Treh1) was the focus of the crosstalk between JH and nutrients in the ovarian development of Helicoverpa armigera. The data indicated that a sugar-free diet and a casein-free diet both arrested ovarian development and reduced JH levels in females. The activity of HaTreh1 was up-regulated by sugar starvation or JH treatments, but was down-regulated by casein-free diet treatment. Im

The Trypanosomatidae family includes protozoa of broad medical and veterinary interest that infect various vertebrates, including humans, and use a range of insects as vector agents. The genus Trypanosoma includes Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi), the etiological agent of Chagas disease, which infects humans and animals, including domestic animals like dogs and cats, which can become infected during the blood meal of triatomine vectors. This study aimed to investigate T. cruzi in 161 blood samples from rescued dogs and cats housed in Zoonoses Surveillance Units (ZSUs) in six municipalities in the

Grapevine viruses reduce harvests and degrade fruit quality, but their genetic diversity in Kazakhstan has remained unexplored. We collected symptomatic leaves from local vineyards and recovered eleven fragments of the coat-protein gene: one from grapevine fanleaf virus, five from grapevine virus A, and five from grapevine leafroll-associated virus 3. After Sanger sequencing, we compared these fragments with more than one thousand international counterparts to place the Kazakh strains on the global family tree. The results reveal a clear spectrum of genetic diversity that mirrors each virus's

Piscine orthoreovirus genotype 1 (PRV-1) is an emerging viral pathogen in salmon aquaculture that causes Heart and Skeletal Muscle Inflammation (HSMI), with high prevalence in salmon-producing countries such as Chile. A significant obstacle in PRV-1 vaccine development is the inability to culture the virus in vitro, which limits the scalability and production of traditional inactivated or DNA-based vaccine strategies. This study describes the development of a novel virus-like particle (VLP)-based vaccine against PRV-1. Recombinant VLP were produced by co-expressing the six structural proteins

Biopesticides have gained increased attention as sustainable substitutes for synthetic pest control products. Nonetheless, in recent years, a growing body of research has highlighted their undesired effects on non-target organisms, including sublethal impacts on social behavior. Here, we investigate the potential adverse effects of a common biopesticide, the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana, on the nestmate recognition ability of the paper wasp Polistes dominula. Nestmate recognition, based on individual cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) profiles, plays a key role in the colony integrity

Normal gastrointestinal (GI) motility, including defecation, is crucial for nutrient absorption, energy balance, and overall health in species ranging from insects to humans. Disruptions in GI motility can lead to conditions like constipation or severe diseases. Mechanosensors, including TRP channels and Piezo, are known to play key roles in regulating gut physiology in Drosophila melanogaster, but their precise involvement in defecation is not fully understood. Additionally, neuropeptides like DH44 have been implicated in gut regulation. This study explores the roles of Trpγ, Diuretic hormone

Trypanosoma brucei, the causative agent of African trypanosomiasis, develops from the long slender (LS) to the short stumpy (SS) form in the mammalian host. The SS trypanosomes are critical for transmission to the insect vector but face significant challenges within the vertebrate host. The role of the immune response in controlling the parasitaemia is well studied, however, the mechanism underpinning the rapid degeneration of SS trypanosomes during the first parasitaemic peak in mice remains somewhat elusive. We demonstrate that fever is a critical yet underexplored factor in facilitating the

In this study, a vitellogenin like1 gene (SfVg-like1) in Sogatella furcifera was identified. The open reading frame (ORF) encoded 1,321 amino acid sequence. Structure analysis reveals that the amino acid sequence of SfVg-like1 has 3 conserved LPD_N, DUF1943 and VWFD domains. Phylogenetic analyses showed that SfVg-like1 was clustered in the same branch with the Vg-like1 of Nilaparvata lugens (100% bootstrap value) compared with other Hemiptera insects Vgs associated with vitellogenesis. Temporo-spatial expression analyses showed that SfVg-like1 expressed during all stages, and in both genders.

During reproduction, multiple species such as insects and all mammals undergo extensive physiological and morphological adaptions to ensure health and survival of the mother and optimal development of the offspring. Here we report that the intestinal epithelium undergoes expansion during pregnancy and lactation in mammals. This enlargement of the intestinal surface area results in a novel geometry of expanded villi. Receptor activator of nuclear factor-κΒ (RANK, encoded by TNFRSF11A) and its ligand RANKL were identified as a molecular pathway involved in this villous expansion of the small int

Brevibacillus laterosporus is a sporulating bacteria, with typical canoe-shaped parasporal bodies attached to the spores. It has shown great biotechnological potential, including its broad pathogenic spectrum against different orders of insects and other invertebrates with medical-veterinary-sanitary importance. The high degree of synanthropy of muscoid dipterans and the damage they cause being a source of myiasis and carriers of pathogens encourage research into their population control. The objective of the study was to evaluate the histopathological effects caused by B. laterosporus NRS 590

Little is known about Native American adaptations to blood-sucking arthropods prior to and following European contact. Multiple accounts starting in the 16th century suggest that rancid animal grease was employed by Gulf Coast indigenes as a mosquito repellent. Although many Native American ethnobotanical remedies for biting insects have been recorded, the use of animal products for this purpose is not well documented. Moreover, few traditional Native American mosquito repellents have been examined using controlled laboratory methods for repellency testing. In this study, we tested the repelle

Bite forces play a key role in animal ecology: they affect mating behaviour, fighting success, and the ability to feed. Although feeding habits of arthropods have a significant ecological and economical impact, we lack fundamental knowledge on how the morphology and physiology of their bite apparatus controls bite performance, and its variation with mandible gape. To address this gap, we derived a biomechanical model that characterizes the relationship between bite force and mandibular opening angle from first principles. We validate this model by comparing its geometric predictions with morph

Mansonellosis is an undermapped insect-transmitted disease caused by filarial nematodes that are estimated to infect hundreds of millions of people globally. Despite their prevalence, there are many outstanding questions regarding the general biology and health impacts of the responsible parasites. Historical reports suggest that the Colombian Amazon is endemic for mansonellosis and may serve as an ideal location to pursue these questions in the backdrop of other endemic and emerging pathogens. We deployed molecular and classical diagnostic approaches to survey Mansonella prevalence among adul

Activating transcription factor 2 (ATF2), a basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factor, plays a crucial role in immune and DNA damage response in mammals. However, the function of ATF2 in insects remains unknown. Here, we isolated the ATF2 gene from Apis cerana cerana (AccATF2) and found that AccATF2 was a main regulator of the honeybee response to oxidative stress. Our results showed that AccATF2 was highly expressed in the head, thorax and integument. AccATF2 was expressed throughout the development period of honeybees, and the highest AccATF2 transcript level was noted in brown-eyed p

Immune priming describes the phenomenon whereby after a primary pathogen exposure, a host more effectively fights a lethal secondary exposure (challenge) to the same pathogen. Conflicting evidence exists for immune priming in invertebrates, potentially due to heterogeneity across studies in the pathogen species tested, the antigen preparation for the primary exposure, and the phenotypic trait used to test for priming. To explore these factors, we injected Drosophila melanogaster with one of two bacterial species, Lactococcus lactis or Providencia burhodogranariea, which had either been heat-ki

RNA interference (RNAi)-based pesticides are promising novel pest management products that might reduce environmental impacts compared to other pesticides. Their sequence-guided mode of action facilitates a high species-selectivity, preventing harm on non-target organisms. However, there is currently no consensus on the minimum needed sequence similarity for efficient RNAi in insects and studies have shown that adverse effects in non-targets cannot always be ruled out a priori. This study investigates the effects of exposing the parasitoid wasp Telenomus podisi to double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) w

During the development of a holometabolous insect such as Drosophila, specific group of cells in the larva survive during metamorphosis, unlike the other larval cells, and finally give rise to the differentiated adult structures. These cells, also known as Adult Progenitor Cells (APCs), maintain their multipotent capacity, differentially respond to hormonal and nutritional signals, survive the intrinsic and environmental stress and respond to the final differentiation cues. However, not much is known about the specific molecular mechanisms that account for their unique characteristics. Here we
